00:34 Hi, boys and girls.
00:35 I'm so glad that you've joined us
00:37 for some fun in the kitchen.
00:39 And you know what?
00:41 We have some special helpers today.
00:43 We have Mr. Carter. Hi.
00:46 And Miss Nicole. Hi.
00:48 And Miss Sophia. Hi.
00:51 And we have Mr. Ben. Hi!
00:54 And we also have another special guest.
00:58 We have Dr. Ryan Hayes.
01:00 Welcome, Dr. Hayes.
01:02 Hi, boys and girls.
01:03 Now, Carter, can you tell me why
01:06 Dr. Hayes is a really special guest?
01:09 Because he's a scientist.
01:12 And what else?
01:13 He's my daddy.
01:14 That's right.
01:16 And, boys and girls,
01:18 today, we're gonna be popping popcorn,
01:22 and we're gonna be talking about popcorn.
01:25 And Dr. Hayes is a chemist,
01:27 so he can tell us
01:28 some really good facts about the nutrition of popcorn.
01:34 It's really good for us, isn't it, Dr. Hayes?
01:35 Oh, it is fantastic for you.
01:38 I'm glad I can be a part of this.
01:39 Oh, yay!
01:40 I love popcorn. Well, you know what?
01:42 You'll have to talk loud
01:43 because I need to turn our popcorn on
01:45 so it'll start popping.
01:47 Oh, you know, I know how to talk loud.
01:48 Oh, good. Yeah.
01:49 Because I've got some popped already,
01:52 but we want to pop some more
01:54 'cause that way each of you are gonna be able to pop it
01:57 and then we're gonna have fun
01:59 putting all kinds of different toppings on our popcorn.
02:02 Sounds exciting.
02:04 That way, you can each make it your own way.
02:06 Won't that be fine?
02:08 Who likes popcorn?
02:09 Me! Oh, me!
02:10 Oh, I love popcorn. Oh, me too.
02:13 And you know what?
02:14 This popcorn is a special Indian corn blend.
02:20 It's a special blend of Indian popcorn.
02:23 Look at all the colors. Isn't it pretty?
02:24 Can you see all the colors? Uh-huh.
02:26 Look at this.
02:27 Look at all those cool colors.
02:29 What colors do you see?
02:31 Red.
02:33 Yellow. Black.
02:34 Yeah, look at that. White.
02:37 Isn't that cool?
02:38 Okay, so let's put this.
02:40 Now you know what's special about this popper?
02:44 This popcorn popper?
02:46 This is an air popper.
02:48 So we're not using oil to pop it,
02:52 so it's gonna be even healthier for us, okay?
02:56 So we're gonna turn it on.
02:58 You ready?
03:00 Yup. Oh, yeah, let's do it.
03:01 All right.
03:04 And then, Dr. Hayes,
03:06 while we're waiting for this to pop,
03:09 tell us about some of the health benefits of popcorn.
03:12 Oh, yeah, popcorn is awesome.
03:15 It's full of so many great minerals,
03:18 but even the things that are probably most exciting
03:20 is the fiber that's in it.
03:22 Well, you know, one of the great things
03:24 that we should learn about popcorn first is
03:25 how does it even pop.
03:27 What makes it pop?
03:28 Does any of the boys and girls know?
03:30 Ben, do you... Maybe it gets hot.
03:33 Okay, it gets hot, we know we need to get it hot.
03:35 Does anyone else know how popcorn pops?
03:38 Maybe the boys and girls,
03:40 I wonder if they've heard about that.
03:42 Do you know, Sophia, how does popcorn pop?
03:45 What makes it pop?
03:47 The air?
03:49 Oh, I bet you Dr. Hayes is gonna tell us.
03:52 Oh, this is so exciting.
03:54 There's a little bit of water inside of all of those kernels.
03:58 And when they get hot,
04:00 the water inside starts to get really excited
04:02 and it wants to just pop out,
04:05 and it's the exploding water inside that makes
04:08 the popcorn kernels turn inside out
04:10 and you see all the white that's inside of it.
04:12 Isn't that neat? Isn't that cool?
04:13 It's just a little bit of water, yeah.
04:15 So your heating the water inside of the popcorn.
04:17 Oh, there are so many other great things,
04:19 but that fiber that's in the popcorn,
04:22 what that does is when you eat all that popcorn,
04:25 the fiber in there helps to move all the food
04:28 through your digestive system
04:30 and you have a long digestive system,
04:33 stomach and intestines,
04:35 and all that food you eat the rest of day
04:37 needs some help getting through there,
04:38 and popcorn can really help that.
04:40 Isn't that interesting, Nicole? Yeah?
04:43 Wow, does anyone want to be a scientist when they grow up?
04:47 Oh, you want to? You want to be a scientist?
04:48 Oh, I think you'd make a good scientist.
04:50 Yeah. Do you wanna be a scientist?
04:52 No? No.
04:54 Oh, maybe I'll convince some of you guys to do that.
04:56 I want to.
04:57 Oh, excellent. You want to, Ben?
04:58 And can you tell us other nutrients in popcorn?
05:01 Oh, yes.
05:03 Some of the great nutrients that are in popcorn
05:05 include calcium and magnesium, iron,
05:09 potassium, and phosphorous.
05:12 And calcium... Does anybody know...
05:13 Have you ever heard of where you use calcium in your body?
05:16 I know, what part do you use calcium in your body?
05:19 Anybody know?
05:22 Oh, your bones.
05:24 That's right, Miss Cinda.
05:26 Your bones are made out of calcium
05:28 and phosphorus and some other things.
05:30 And so you're really giving some minerals for your bones
05:34 to grow when you eat popcorn.
05:35 Isn't that great?
05:37 Uh-huh. Yeah.
05:38 And there's some magnesium in there.
05:40 Magnesium, people don't talk too much about,
05:43 but it's an important nutrient that helps
05:45 a lot of your body's proteins and enzymes work.
05:48 And so they help to chew up the popcorn
05:50 and help get the nutrition out of your food,
05:53 so magnesium is very important,
05:54 that also helps your bones too.
05:56 Wow, this is really starting to pop.
05:58 So this is a healthy snack.
06:00 This is a wonderful healthy snack.
06:02 We like to eat in our household,
06:03 don't we, Carter?
06:05 And do you know that this Indian blend, this Indian corn,
06:09 this is non-GMO.
06:13 So those that have the celiac disease and stuff,
06:15 they can eat that.
06:17 That's right.
06:18 Look at this. That's right.
06:19 And it's low in sugar and gluten free.
06:21 These make these great snacks and foods
06:23 for everybody who has different dietary issues.
06:28 And it's low in calories. Oh, yeah.
06:30 Low in calories. Yeah.
06:32 And when you air pop it, then you have it low in fat.
06:35 That's right. And we're just gonna...
06:38 We'll show you how we just spray
06:40 a little bit of olive oil spray on it
06:43 and then our seasonings will stick to it,
06:45 you'll see that.
06:46 Look. Isn't that cool? Wow.
06:48 What do you think, Sophia?
06:49 Look in there.
06:51 Is that popping? Yeah.
06:52 Do you guys see the different colors
06:53 in the kernels?
06:55 Uh-huh. Yes.
06:56 Yeah?
06:57 I thought the black kernel maybe...
06:59 How come it doesn't turn black?
07:00 We don't see any black popcorn in there.
07:02 I see. You do?
07:05 That's 'cause the popcorn kernel turned inside out
07:08 and it's all white on the inside, all of them.
07:10 Miss Cinda, there's another popcorn kernel
07:12 that barely popped.
07:14 Oh, you know, some of them don't pop as much.
07:17 And I wonder, Dr. Hayes,
07:18 if that's because they don't have
07:20 enough moisture inside of them.
07:21 I think you're right, Miss Cinda.
07:23 They may not have had enough water in there
07:24 or they didn't get hot enough.
07:26 They kind of got moved up with the other popcorn.
07:28 It looks like it's about done.
07:29 I think it's about done.
07:32 Let's turn it over.
07:33 Oh, this is exciting.
07:35 Ooh!
07:37 I love popcorn. Me, too.
07:40 It's one of my favorite things.
07:42 Oh, wow. That is great.
07:45 I'm gonna set this right over here.
07:47 One popped again.
07:49 Yeah, it's still hot in there,
07:50 so you got to be careful, right?
07:52 When you take it off there, it's still hot,
07:54 so you wanna give it about 30 seconds.
07:55 And look, I forgot...
07:57 Yeah. Don't touch the seeds yet.
07:58 I forgot put the lid on,
07:59 and this will be hot
08:01 because those are the seeds that didn't pop.
08:03 So who wants to try some?
08:05 And then you can flavor your own.
08:09 And I've got some extra too.
08:10 Oh, okay. So I brought extra.
08:12 So hold your bowls over here.
08:17 Okay.
08:18 And then what we're gonna do is
08:24 we're gonna spray a little bit.
08:26 And maybe, Dr. Hayes,
08:27 you could spray everybody's popcorn for me?
08:29 Oh, sure.
08:31 And then so, boys and girls,
08:33 what we're gonna do is we're gonna spray it.
08:38 And now you get to choose your toppings.
08:42 So let's see.
08:44 We have regular salt. Let me spray yours.
08:49 Where is the regular salt?
08:52 Oh, we don't have regular salt. Sorry.
08:55 We have pink Himalayan salt. Isn't this pretty?
08:59 'Cause on Tiny Tot's, we like color.
09:01 That's right.
09:02 Plus, this is a really special salt.
09:04 So you've got pink Himalayan salt,
09:07 we've got nutritional yeast flakes,
09:10 and we've got McKay's instant chicken seasoning,
09:13 and it's a vegan chicken seasoning.
09:15 I love this chicken seasoning on it.
09:18 We've got hickory smoked dried torula yeast,
09:24 that's a nutritional yeast too.
09:26 And then we have a season salt.
09:29 So what would you guys like on your popcorn?
09:32 The first one that you said it was.
09:35 The Himalayan salt? The Himalayan?
09:36 Okay. Oh, that'll be fun.
09:37 Be careful 'cause the shaker, it's large holes.
09:42 What would you like on yours?
09:43 Oh, Ben! That's okay.
09:46 You might want to add some more popcorn to that.
09:48 If you shake it, the salt will go to the bottom.
09:51 Oh, that's true. Yup.
09:52 And then the salt will stay there.
09:54 What would you like on yours, Sofia?
09:55 That happened in our household a few times.
09:56 You want this one? Yeah.
09:58 Okay.
09:59 So you can take a spoon and sprinkle a little on.
10:02 What would you like, Nicole? Just need a little bit.
10:04 You want this? Okay. You just need a little.
10:07 What would you like, Carter? You want this?
10:10 Okay. Okay.
10:11 Now be really careful, you saw how it came out.
10:13 So you just wanna really gently sprinkle it.
10:16 We practice sprinkling a lot. I think he can do it.
10:19 Let's try our popcorn. Perfect, perfect.
10:22 All right. Good job.
10:24 And you know what?
10:25 You can make popcorn balls,
10:28 you can meet caramel corn, you can make kettle corn.
10:34 You know what kettle corn is?
10:36 When you're popping it, you can...
10:39 Well, you can do it on the stove.
10:40 If you pop it in the kettle on the stove,
10:43 you can pop it with a little bit of oil
10:45 and a little bit of sugar,
10:47 and it coats it with a glaze.
10:49 Yeah, that's good. Excuse me, Miss Cinda.
10:51 Could I have that?
10:52 The yeast flakes? Uh-huh.
10:53 Try your popcorn. See if you like it.
10:55 Do you want something else in yours too?
10:57 What would you like?
11:00 What would you like on yours?
11:02 The salt? Oh, yeah.
11:04 Okay, sprinkle it very carefully.
11:06 Miss Cinda, at first, I think it's gonna come out
11:09 in big chunks but then when you do it...
11:11 Oh, yeah, it doesn't. Yeah.
11:13 Did you guys try your popcorn, see if you like it?
11:15 Yeah.
11:16 What would you like to try? You want some of this?
11:18 Okay, put a little bit.
11:19 You want some of this?
11:20 Oh, boys and girls,
11:22 do you like to flavor your popcorn?
11:25 What's your favorite flavor? Because you know what?
11:28 There's all kinds of things you can put on your popcorn.
11:32 Could you please pass the...
11:34 The seasoning? The white stuff?
11:36 This one? The season salt? Uh-huh.
11:37 So mix it together. Oh, what would you like?
11:39 Mix it all together. You wanna smell it first?
11:41 Oh, okay.
11:42 That has like a hickory smoked flavor.
11:46 That smell good? Make all sorts of flavor.
11:51 Who's gonna try their popcorn? Me!
11:55 I'm gonna try the popcorn.
11:57 What did you wanna use? Some of that.
12:00 Okay, let's try some of the seasoning salt.
12:01 You want some...
12:02 Oh, you guys are just making a whole mixture of popcorn.
12:04 Yeah. Uh-huh.
12:06 That's our kitchen timer.
12:07 We're almost out of time, boys and girls.
12:12 You want...
12:14 There you go. Is that good? Oh, wow.
12:16 There you go.
12:18 Oh, did you try your popcorn? This is a lot of fun.
12:21 Yeah, let's try some over here. Thanks.
12:24 It's good.
12:25 And you know what...
12:27 Okay, let's mix it all together.
12:28 You know what I like with my popcorn?
12:31 I left it on the kitchen counter.
12:33 Look. Look.
12:36 What goes with popcorn really good?
12:40 Apple.
12:42 Oh, how did you know?
12:46 We like to eat lots of fruit with our popcorn.
12:49 Anybody want a apple with their popcorn?
12:50 Let's mix it together. Yeah!
12:52 Oh, let me find a knife.
12:54 Could you please pass the McKay's?
12:58 Oh, yeah. The McKay's?
12:59 Let me pass it down. Here you go.
13:01 Oh, let me go to the kitchen by the kitchen cupboard here.
13:03 Let's try it. I got a knife.
13:05 Let me try some.
13:09 I like the flavors. And I got two more apples.
13:13 Who wants an apple with their popcorn?
13:15 Me!
13:17 Boys and girls, doesn't this look like a nice healthy snack?
13:19 Mm-hm.
13:21 You know, we need to eat healthy
13:24 so that we have healthy bodies.
13:26 Don't we, Dr. Hayes? Oh, Absolutely.
13:28 Because if we eat healthy, it'll help...
13:32 Here, Nicole. Here's yours.
13:34 If we eat healthy,
13:35 then it helps us to not be sick, doesn't it?
13:38 Uh-huh. Who...
13:40 Oh, I'm sorry, Sophia.
13:42 Here, we don't wanna eat it if it's on the ground.
13:45 We'll get it later. There you go.
13:48 Isn't that yummy? Mm-hm.
13:52 Boys and girls, that's all the time we have for now.
13:55 Thank you for being with us, Dr. Hayes.
13:57 Oh, I'm glad to be here.
13:58 And, boys and girls, always remember,
14:00 any time you can be in the kitchen,
14:03 it's fun.
