00:01 Stay tuned to meet two young women
00:03 who are not only on fire for the Lord,
00:05 but they are doing unthinkable.
00:07 My name is Jason Bradley
00:08 and you're watching Urban Report.
00:34 Hello, and welcome to Urban Report.
00:36 While at the General Conference session
00:38 I met so many young people
00:39 involved in really impeccable ministries.
00:42 Joy Cho and Grace Lee are part of the Leprosy Ministry
00:45 in both China and Japan.
00:48 Let's take a look at the impact
00:49 they are having in the leprosy colonies.
00:55 One of the things that I absolutely love
00:57 about General Conference is that
00:59 you get to meet so many people
01:00 that are a part of impactful ministries for God.
01:05 The two ladies that I have before us today
01:07 are Grace Lee and Joy Cho.
01:11 Welcome. Thank you.
01:12 You're welcome.
01:14 So you all are part of the Leprosy Ministry, correct?
01:18 First of, what is leprosy for our viewers that don't know?
01:22 What is leprosy? Sure.
01:24 Let me explain that.
01:25 Leprosy is an ancient disease as we have heard in Bible times
01:29 but it still continues today.
01:31 Leprosy is a bacteria and it goes to the body
01:35 and devastates the body.
01:37 Now thankfully 40 years ago
01:39 they came up with a medication, a multi drug antibiotic.
01:43 So once the leper grandmas and grandpas
01:45 are able to take the course of that medication,
01:48 then the leprosy bacteria becomes
01:50 inactive in their bodies.
01:51 So now we're not afraid of getting leprosy from them
01:57 because they have already taken the medication.
01:59 Okay, okay.
02:00 Now tell me about your ministry,
02:02 tell me about the Leprosy Ministry.
02:04 What do you guys do? How did it get started?
02:07 Well, the Leprosy Ministry was started by a lay person
02:11 whom we call Grandpa Kim nine years ago
02:13 and from that time he came alone,
02:16 but through God's providences other missionary volunteers
02:20 have come joined the work.
02:21 And so currently...
02:22 Well, in China there's about 600 colonies,
02:25 but currently because of a lack of missionary volunteers
02:28 we're in about 10 of those places.
02:30 However there have been over of 677 baptisms,
02:34 few more have baptized a few days ago.
02:38 And God is just working in a powerful way
02:41 so we're in several different provinces in China.
02:44 Okay.
02:46 So a leprosy colony is what exactly?
02:49 Is that just where people with leprosy live
02:52 or I mean, how does that work?
02:54 Do they get pushed to those areas?
02:57 Tell us about that. Yes.
02:58 So a long time ago before the treatment was developed
03:02 they were forcefully moved into these kind of villages,
03:05 these colonies, and however,
03:07 now they are no longer contagious
03:09 but most of the people living there are elderly,
03:11 so they were already abandoned
03:13 by their families a long time ago,
03:15 so they have no where to go, so they are living there.
03:18 Wow. Wow. Yes.
03:20 Now, Joy, tell me how you got involved in the ministry
03:23 and then I want to hear from you, Grace,
03:24 how you got involved.
03:26 Okay.
03:27 Well, a little over 2 years ago
03:29 I went to visit the leper colonies for 10 days.
03:32 I was actually on my way back to the US
03:34 and I had a job lined up,
03:37 waiting for me as a teaching principal in Oregon,
03:40 in one of our Adventist schools,
03:42 but during the 10 days that I was there
03:44 God totally changed my life.
03:47 He introduced me to our leper grandmas and grandpas
03:50 to without, many of them without fingers,
03:53 some are blind, some have amputated arms and legs.
03:56 I saw the great need that they had.
03:58 And second I met the volunteers,
04:01 the missionary volunteers and they had devoted everything,
04:05 given up jobs, given up schooling, sold their homes,
04:09 just ready to serve our leper grandmas and grandpas.
04:12 That really convicted me
04:14 but actually the most important thing
04:15 that convicted me was the Bible study.
04:18 We study the Bible for five to seven hours a day.
04:21 Wow.
04:22 And the word of God just started making sense.
04:25 Instead of just being a theory
04:27 it became practical in their life.
04:29 And I was convinced
04:31 that God wants people to fulfill His prophecies
04:34 and He's given them to us so He needs His people
04:38 to fulfill them so I wanted to be part of that.
04:40 Amen. What about you, Grace?
04:43 Well, through God providences,
04:45 after graduate school God let me to Korea
04:47 and then to teach
04:48 at the Adventist University there for a year.
04:51 It was during that time
04:52 that I met some missionary volunteers
04:54 who were in china and I was able to visit,
04:57 but I guess some seeds were planted.
04:59 It was just a very short visit,
05:00 but after my year of contract God sent me back
05:03 and I was planning to stay just for a few months,
05:06 but again through the word, through his providences,
05:10 through what I saw, I was convicted
05:12 that there was a great work to be done
05:14 and God had called me there so I decided to stay longer.
05:19 Wow. Wow.
05:20 Now you all are...
05:22 You're in China and Japan, correct?
05:25 Yes.
05:26 Now you're Korean, right? Yes.
05:28 Okay.
05:30 So are there any type of...
05:33 Are there any type of language barriers
05:36 or anything that you face?
05:39 Definitely, I only knew how to say Sheshay in Chinese
05:43 when I went to China.
05:44 What does that mean?
05:46 That means thank you,
05:47 and I'm probably butchering the pronunciation.
05:49 Okay.
05:50 But nonetheless we went
05:51 and God has been doing real miracles I would say.
05:55 He has taught us to speak a few words
05:58 and the necessary words in their languages.
06:01 Actually, we spent a lot of time in Southern China
06:03 where they speak Cantonese.
06:04 So we were learning a little bit of Cantonese,
06:06 learning a little bit of Mandarin
06:07 which is the general language in China.
06:11 But I like to tell people
06:13 that God has given us the language of love
06:16 so even if we can't speak all the words
06:18 we can communicate His love through our actions.
06:21 And we work with other volunteers
06:24 who can speak multiple languages really well,
06:26 so that is really helpful to all of us.
06:30 Yeah, that's a blessing, that's a blessing.
06:31 And earlier in the interview you said that leprosy
06:36 isn't contagious once they have had...
06:39 The medication. The medication, okay.
06:41 Now they haven't the medication,
06:42 it is contagious.
06:43 So when do they get that medication?
06:46 When they enter the leprosy colonies?
06:49 I mean, how does that process work?
06:52 Well, many of our grandmas like Grace said,
06:55 many of them are very elderly that means for several decades
06:58 they already had the disease
07:00 and then the medication was discovered and created.
07:04 So once the medication was established,
07:07 they were all medicated,
07:08 whoever was inside the colonies.
07:09 Okay.
07:11 Currently we don't have many people,
07:14 hardly anyone that I know of enter the leper colonies
07:17 because now as soon as somebody get diagnosed
07:20 they can take the medication,
07:21 they're no longer contagious
07:23 and their bodies do not, you know, get deformed.
07:26 So they can just re-enter society
07:28 as if they didn't have the disease.
07:30 Okay, okay.
07:31 Now we have a couple of pictures here
07:33 because we want our viewers
07:35 to get a full visual of how devastating this can be.
07:40 So we're going to go ahead and roll those in
07:43 and I want you to describe
07:45 what's going on in these pictures.
07:46 Sure.
07:48 This first picture, there's this blind grandpa
07:50 and you can see he has no fingers
07:53 and he's trying to eat
07:54 and so before the missionary volunteers went there,
07:58 everyday he was trying to eat by himself
07:59 but most of the food would fall on the ground.
08:02 And so, many people with their disabilities,
08:04 they have a hard time just doing basic daily functions.
08:08 And you can see their living conditions,
08:10 some of these places are not so good.
08:13 The second picture we see,
08:15 since we live together in the colonies with them,
08:18 the other volunteers together, it's like family.
08:21 We don't just come for a few days and leave.
08:23 Someone is there all the time.
08:25 And so after they come to know and trust,
08:29 they see Christ's love acted out in a real way,
08:33 not just with words but their hearts naturally become open
08:36 to hearing about our Savior Jesus Christ,
08:38 their Savior Jesus Christ.
08:40 Now what's going on in this third picture?
08:43 Okay.
08:44 Well, you can see it's a very happy picture.
08:48 This grandpa is getting baptized
08:50 and so after they meet Jesus,
08:52 they want to follow Him
08:54 and commit their lives in baptisms.
08:56 We've had over 677 baptisms and 100s more are waiting,
09:02 many more are waiting to be baptized.
09:04 And the cool thing is,
09:05 after they receive Jesus they want to share his love.
09:08 And so they are sharing with outsiders
09:11 who come in and visit,
09:12 they are sharing to the people around them.
09:14 I'm glad you guys provided us with those pictures
09:17 because a picture is worth a thousand words.
09:19 I mean, we can sit here and we can talk about this all day,
09:22 but until our viewers
09:23 get the actual visual on what it's like.
09:27 I mean, I can't even fathom,
09:29 I can't even begin to imagine
09:31 what it's like to live with leprosy.
09:34 And I'm sure that there's a lot of people out there
09:37 that they still maintain a positive upbeat spirit
09:41 by the grace of God.
09:42 Yes, yes.
09:43 So what kinds of things do you do for the people
09:46 that are living in these leprosy colonies?
09:49 Like what do you do with them?
09:51 Well, it's very simple basic
09:53 but, you know, like someone would take care
09:55 of their elderly grandparents.
09:58 Some people need help who are blind,
10:00 who don't have fingers, they need help eating.
10:02 Some people they need help cleaning,
10:04 some people need help washing clothes, sewing,
10:10 taking walks around, even basic small things,
10:13 but that could mean a lot.
10:15 We also do wound care for them,
10:17 so even though we don't have any medical background,
10:19 when we arrived we were trained
10:21 to be able to do the simple wound care.
10:23 So daily we get to do that. Wow.
10:26 And of course Bible studies are happening everyday
10:28 and we meet together for worship on Sabbath together.
10:31 Wow, wow. That's great.
10:34 Now how is God working in the leprosy colonies?
10:38 Where does God come into all this?
10:40 I know the Bible studies and everything,
10:42 but what have you seen?
10:44 Or what miracles have you witnessed while being there?
10:50 There are so many.
10:51 We can only tell you a few stories,
10:52 but as God has entered the leper colonies,
10:55 especially the leper colonies
10:57 where they've never had visitors or foreigners before,
11:01 God has totally opened hearts.
11:03 There's one story that one of our volunteers
11:06 who went in at the very beginning
11:09 about 8 years ago,
11:10 she went in and told one of the leper grandpas,
11:13 grandpa, Jesus loves you
11:16 but the grandpa didn't even know who Jesus was,
11:20 and then secondly, he didn't even understand
11:22 what the word love meant
11:23 because they had been abandoned by their families,
11:26 didn't understand the concept.
11:28 And so through service and love
11:30 and daily just being there for the grandmas and grandpas
11:33 they were able to teach them about Jesus and His love.
11:36 So it's a living example of Christianity, you're living it,
11:40 you're teaching it and it's very practical
11:43 and they see it through you,
11:45 it's like letting your light shine.
11:46 Amen. That's great, that's great.
11:49 Now Christianity isn't widely accepted in China, is it?
11:53 So what happens if you get caught spreading the Gospel?
11:59 Well, there are different consequences
12:02 and different religious policies there,
12:05 however, in the leprosy colonies
12:08 God has done amazing things
12:10 and we have had the okay from someone high up to go ahead
12:15 and have Bible studies, worship together,
12:17 pray together, have worship together.
12:20 So we truly believe that God is working in a mighty way
12:25 because He wants everyone
12:27 to have a chance to hear the good news.
12:30 Yes, yes.
12:31 There are a couple stories that are really interesting.
12:33 Someone called the police
12:35 because they heard that foreigners
12:37 were inside the leper colonies
12:38 and spreading the Gospel.
12:40 The police came, ready to take them away,
12:42 but instead they saw the good work that was being done
12:45 and they said, oh, let me introduce you
12:48 to some reporters, this needs to get out to the community.
12:51 Wow.
12:53 And there's another story where the police were coming
12:56 into take the away the foreigner volunteers again
12:58 and the leper colony chief, the chief of the leprosy colony
13:02 he said, if you take away our foreign volunteers
13:06 then you and your family need to come in and do the same work
13:09 and after that they said, okay, we're going.
13:13 Yeah, I'm surely they thought twice about that
13:15 'cause they are not as educated as you all are
13:17 on the whole situation.
13:20 So now you said the leprosy colony chief, so what's the...
13:25 What is the organization like?
13:27 I mean what's the, I guess hierarchy of it?
13:30 Sure.
13:31 Well, there are 600 leper colonies
13:33 and actually it's the government
13:34 that has provided them the living spaces.
13:37 Some provinces take care of the colonies
13:39 better than others.
13:41 So some are building new structures
13:43 even with flush toilets, showers, etcetera,
13:45 but some are still in impoverish,
13:48 you know, very terrible conditions.
13:50 So it just kind of depends on the situation.
13:53 So thankfully most of them get a small stipend
13:55 for food every, every month.
13:57 And then there's one or two
13:59 depending on how large the villages are,
14:01 the village chiefs and they are kind of the representative,
14:05 the spokespeople for the lepers.
14:08 Wow. Wow.
14:09 Now how has this...
14:11 How has being a part of this ministry impacted your life?
14:14 Let's start with you, Grace.
14:15 Well, you know when I first went to China
14:19 I thought, oh, I'm gonna go and help them,
14:21 but you know, it's been such a life changing process
14:24 and a very humbling process.
14:26 During this time God was teaching me that,
14:29 Grace, you're actually the leper here.
14:32 You have the leprosy of selfishness and sin,
14:35 but I want to heal you,
14:37 and so it's really been amazing.
14:39 From the grandmas and grandpas in those colonies
14:42 and getting a little taste of God's amazing love for me.
14:46 The way that they love each other and share,
14:49 the way that they share and give with us,
14:52 I've been overwhelmed
14:54 and just starting to learn more,
14:56 a little bit more of how amazing God's love is.
15:02 And what about you, Joy?
15:04 God totally my changed my life.
15:06 Even though I was born into the church
15:07 and went to Adventist schools, taught at an Adventist school,
15:12 worked at an Adventist Church.
15:14 I was so self deceived,
15:16 thinking I was a good Christian,
15:17 but really, totally falling short, such a sinner.
15:21 So when I went to China and decided to give my life
15:25 to serving the Lord in this way,
15:27 God showed me, He kept revealing Himself to me.
15:31 I think one of the things that I was self deceived about
15:34 was I thought I was living for others,
15:36 but actually I was just living so comfortably
15:39 and self indulgently.
15:41 Yes.
15:42 And in this process in the last two years,
15:45 I think God has really placed in my heart
15:48 a small love for souls.
15:50 And I think I've had such an easy life,
15:53 these people have had such a difficult life.
15:57 And even if I don't go to heaven,
16:00 I really want my leper grandmas and grandpas
16:03 to be able to go to heaven and be fully restored.
16:06 Amen.
16:07 You guys are doing such an amazing work
16:09 and it's so, so neat
16:11 that God has blessed you all with a huge task.
16:15 But you accepted the calling and you went towards it.
16:20 How did your family feel about it?
16:22 Like, I know they have to be proud of you.
16:24 Like, how did your family feel about what you chose to do?
16:29 I'm thankful for believing parents and the church.
16:34 And when they first learned about,
16:35 they were kind of surprised, not super happy,
16:38 but they prayed about it
16:40 and so overtime their hearts had become more open,
16:44 but what the real deciding factor was,
16:46 last spring my father came to China for three weeks
16:50 to come visit and see what was going on.
16:53 And during that time the Holy Sprit
16:55 really worked in his heart
16:56 because I've never seen my dad cry so much before
16:59 because when he would meet the grandmas and grandpas
17:02 he realized that these people
17:05 were truly waiting for Jesus' second coming.
17:08 He asked this one grandpa who was blind,
17:11 who had memorized over a 1500 bible versus
17:14 in the last few years.
17:15 He asked, so when do you want Jesus to comeback again?
17:19 And the grandpa promptly answered,
17:20 well, this evening would be great.
17:23 And so my dad started to cry
17:24 because he realized even though
17:26 he had been going to church for a really long time,
17:29 this man was really waiting for Jesus' second coming
17:32 more than he was.
17:33 Wow. Yes.
17:34 And what about you?
17:36 What's your experience with your family and them embracing?
17:39 Well, again my parents are also Adventist
17:41 and very active in our church.
17:44 But I called them two days before
17:45 I was supposed to land in LAX for them pick me up.
17:48 And I said, I'm not coming home.
17:51 So your parents live in America?
17:53 They do. Okay. Okay.
17:54 My parents as well. Yeah.
17:57 So they were shocked to say the least
17:59 that was not coming home
18:00 and giving up my job as a teaching principal.
18:02 And it took a while for them to accept it
18:06 but I think they are happy and I think they are proud.
18:09 So we're happy to be doing the work together.
18:12 Yes, I'm sure they are.
18:15 What other miracle stories do you have with the leper colony?
18:21 Well, just a shot one.
18:23 We accidentally took an illegal taxi.
18:27 I guess a taxi that wasn't registered-
18:29 back to the leper colony one night
18:31 when we were getting visas.
18:33 Anyway, we were coming back from getting our visas,
18:36 accidentally took this illegal taxi,
18:40 however, right before we started to go
18:44 the traffic police came and arrested the driver.
18:48 However, there was this Chinese lady who was with us
18:50 and they want to interrogate her and write a report.
18:53 We've decided to go because they didn't ask us
18:55 because we were foreigners.
18:57 However, we decided to go back and help her
18:59 and there was a policeman there who knew some English,
19:02 his English was pretty good
19:04 and so he started asking us questions.
19:07 We all went down to the police station together,
19:09 they wrote the report and everything,
19:11 but they asked us, so what are you guys doing here?
19:13 We showed them the pictures,
19:15 we said we're here as volunteers for these people.
19:19 The policemen were shocked,
19:21 two of them gave us a free ride back to the leprosy colony
19:25 and then the next week they came back again
19:27 along with that Chinese lady, and you know what?
19:30 The miracle is the grandmas and grandpas witnessed to them
19:34 for the first time about who Jesus was,
19:37 and His amazing love.
19:38 Wow. Amen.
19:40 Now is the work the same in Japan
19:43 as it is in China or does it differ?
19:46 I mean, how does that... It's a good question.
19:49 God's been opening the doors in Japan for the,
19:51 during the last seven months.
19:54 Even though there are lepers in 13 colonies in Japan.
19:58 Their living situation is really good.
20:01 Yeah, living well.
20:03 But we found out
20:05 that there are actually 14,000 deaf blind people
20:08 that are like Helen Keller,
20:10 they can not see and they can not hear
20:12 to some degree or another.
20:14 We found 14,000.
20:16 And so we felt like they are the ones that don't have Jesus.
20:21 They don't have the hope of salvation.
20:23 They barely have anyone to communicate with.
20:26 And so the founder of our ministry,
20:29 he sent us to Japan because he has a real heart for Japanese,
20:33 he was even born in Japan.
20:34 And so God has been opening the doors
20:37 and we've been developing relationships with them
20:39 and one of our volunteers in Osaka, Japan,
20:42 she was able to meet one lady, one deaf blind lady.
20:45 She was so excited to meet her
20:47 and she said, oh, you know, let's be good friends,
20:50 and our volunteer said, oh, well, great,
20:52 we're both alone, let's be like older sister, younger sister.
20:56 And so she starts sharing about Jesus and about church.
20:59 The deaf blind lady says, I want to go to church.
21:02 And so the next Sabbath they went to church together.
21:05 When they went to church she started crying,
21:08 she kept crying and she didn't understand why.
21:12 There was another time when our volunteer
21:14 was sharing with her the love of Jesus
21:17 and she kept crying
21:18 and again the deaf blind lady didn't know why.
21:21 But during that time
21:23 when she was hearing about the love of Jesus for her,
21:25 she said, oh, this is strange,
21:27 my eyes are getting brighter, what's going on?
21:30 And so she was getting, I don't know,
21:33 maybe a little bit more light or something.
21:36 When she went to go visit her doctor
21:37 to get a check up a few days later
21:40 and the doctor verified that something had changed
21:44 and he said, this is a miracle, this is from the doctors lips.
21:48 Wow.
21:49 And the doctor said, if you get a surgery
21:52 I think you might be able to see again.
21:54 Wow.
21:55 So we know it's the power of the love of God.
21:58 Yes. Yes.
21:59 And I know she was really excited to get that news.
22:02 How can people reach you all?
22:04 If they wanted to know, how they can support the ministry,
22:07 how they can help you?
22:08 How can they get in contact with you?
22:10 Well, we don't have a website but we have email address
22:13 and that is isaiah58light@gmail.com.
22:17 Spell that Isaiah.
22:20 I- S-A-I-A-H,
22:23 the number's 58, L- I-G-H-T@gmail.com
22:30 That's wonderful. That's wonderful.
22:32 Now what thoughts would you like to share with our viewers?
22:37 What is something that you would like to share
22:39 with somebody who's thinking about getting into ministry?
22:42 I want you to look into that camera
22:44 and I want you to share that with them right now.
22:47 Viewers, I want to implore you to live like you believe
22:53 that Jesus is truly coming soon.
22:56 He's given us the way to live in these last days.
23:00 And it's the work of Isaiah 58,
23:02 giving our lives and selfless service for those in need.
23:05 As we do that God promises that he's going to heal us,
23:09 heal us of our sins and heal us of our character defects.
23:13 He is desperate.
23:15 Jesus is desperate for us to live
23:17 and shine His light for others.
23:19 So I implore you, come visit the leper colonies in China
23:23 or come visit the deaf blind in Japan.
23:25 Make a difference in the communities
23:27 where you are, and God bless you.
23:29 Amen.
23:30 Now what are some of your needs?
23:33 Like, what do you guys need to operate?
23:38 Well, the harvest truly is great,
23:40 but the laborers are few.
23:42 And so I guess the greatest need would be,
23:46 not just people to come for a few days and leave,
23:48 but people are really, truly wanting to consecrate
23:52 their lives in ministry, yes.
23:54 Okay.
23:56 And what do you foresee as some needs of the ministry as well?
24:00 Well, we definitely need the co-laborers,
24:02 not just co-laborers in the field,
24:05 but also our prayer warriors around the world.
24:08 So definitely please remember us,
24:10 pray for us, share the news.
24:13 If God so moves you can support us in whatever He prompts.
24:17 Absolutely. Absolutely.
24:19 So what's next?
24:20 I mean, how do you expand this Leprosy Ministry?
24:23 Like, what's on the horizon for you all?
24:27 Well, God is opening doors pretty rapidly in Japan.
24:31 I think we'll be going there soon.
24:34 However, more and more people coming to China
24:37 and so it's definitely an adventure with God.
24:41 And I think He is in more of a rush than we are to get,
24:45 to fulfill the great commission in the world.
24:49 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.
24:52 What are you feel us next for you
24:54 as far as like China and Japan are concerned?
24:58 You know right now the most important thing
25:00 is that we receive the Holy Sprit's power
25:03 to be completely emptied of self
25:06 and so we are really praying for the Latter Rain
25:08 and to be ready to receive the power
25:11 that God wants to give, to work in these last days.
25:14 So whether it's China, whether it's Japan, Korea, America,
25:18 you know, we don't know 'cause day by day
25:20 we try to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit,
25:22 so we'll see where He leads us.
25:24 Amen. Amen.
25:25 I'm so grateful that you all decided
25:27 to accept God's calling on your life.
25:30 And for our viewers out here,
25:33 you too can help out in ministry.
25:36 I mean, it can be the smallest thing or the biggest thing,
25:40 God will, He can and will use you.
25:44 Pray and ask Him what is calling is on your life
25:47 and give in to it.
25:48 I want to thank you, guys, so much for joining us today.
25:52 It's been a pleasure. It's been a pleasure too.
25:53 Thank you so much.
25:56 Wow.
25:57 That is such a powerful ministry.
25:59 Here are two young women that are a part of the ministry
26:02 that deals with people that society has cast out
26:05 and labeled as untouchable.
26:07 They are spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ in an area
26:10 where it is dangerous to do so.
26:12 My friends, we're living in the last days
26:14 and we've been assigned a very special task
26:17 that is found in Mark 16:15.
26:20 That states, "Go Ye into all the world,
26:23 and preach the gospel to every creature."
26:26 It is our duty as Christians
26:28 to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone.
26:31 We can not keep these precious promises a secret.
26:34 We must get up, get active and get to work.
26:37 I encourage you to join
26:38 our 'The Blessing is on the Go!' evangelistic team.
