00:16 Are you interested in a prescription that will help
00:20 almost every medical condition? 00:22 Stay tuned... 00:24 I'm Dr. James Marcum, are you interested in 00:27 discovering the reason why? 00:29 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problem? 00:32 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:35 Well, you're about to be given "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:41 I'm your host Nick Evenson, and today, we want to talk 00:44 with you about treatments that 00:46 don't necessarily include medication. 00:48 And Dr. Marcum is going to answer some 00:50 questions on that topic for us. 00:51 So Dr. Marcum, explain how we don't always need a 00:55 pill to fix our medical conditions. 00:56 Yeah Nick, there's lots of things in life that change 01:00 the chemistry of the entire body rather than a pill 01:03 that just takes one chemical pathway. 01:06 And what we really wanted to talk today is 01:09 a lot of people don't think of this as a way to change the 01:11 chemistry of the entire body... but movement or exercise. Right 01:15 And I know you like to exercise a lot. 01:17 I love to exercise - I get out 01:19 and ride my bicycle all year round, 01:21 and in the summer I like to get out on the water, it's great. 01:25 So we're going to spend today's program talking about movement, 01:28 how to change the chemistry of the entire body 01:31 on a regular basis and what it does for you. 01:33 We're going to answer a lot of questions, 01:35 and we're going to also talk a little bit about first aid. 01:39 Do you know what first aid is Nick? Yes 01:41 You know, first aid is something that I've done a little bit of 01:43 training in, but tell us why do we need to know first aid? 01:46 Well, you know, everyone will come and help someone 01:49 some day in life and a lot of people, if they don't have 01:52 planned what they want to do, guess what? 01:55 They panic, you know... "I'm scared, I don't know what 01:57 to do," so we're going to talk over the series of programs, 02:00 some basic first aid steps you can do and also some 02:03 things that you might want to 02:04 put in your first aid kit at home... Right! 02:06 Because some people haven't even assembled 02:08 a first aid kit. 02:10 So we're going to talk about all the interesting things... 02:12 How to use them; What are some of the most 02:14 valuable things to have in your first aid kit. 02:16 And in a few minutes, we're going to talk about 02:18 some of the basics. 02:19 But first, I wanted to introduce our 02:21 audience to you Nick. Thank you. 02:23 Yeah, Nick is going to be our new host of 02:25 "Ultimate Prescription" and Nick works with me 02:28 at "Heartwise," and he does many different things 02:30 including production and he is producing 02:32 a kid's program for "Three Angels." 02:34 Now that's taken you a lot more time than you thought. 02:36 Yeah, you know, sometimes we take on projects and they 02:38 are a bit more involved than we first realized. 02:41 Well kids don't hold still like you think. 02:43 That's right, kids are great, you never know 02:44 exactly what you're going to get, 02:46 but that's what keeps it exciting. 02:47 Remember I was filming one not too long ago and he was 02:50 doing some things in the camera 02:51 when I wasn't even paying attention... 02:53 But kids, they do interesting things. 02:54 But you know, Nick, kids don't seem to have a problem, 02:58 much problem with movement, do they? 03:00 Right, kids exercise all the time and it's not 03:02 necessarily because they're trying to exercise, 03:04 but they're just playing and sometimes as we grow up, 03:07 we don't get enough of that. 03:08 You know, I get a lot of people asking... 03:11 "I want to take a natural remedy," you know, 03:14 "I want to take a natural remedy for blood pressure," 03:16 "I want to take a natural remedy for joint pains," 03:18 and I don't blame them. 03:20 I don't like to write prescriptions for pills either 03:22 if I don't need to. 03:24 But I want everyone today to think about the natural 03:27 remedy of exercise as a natural remedy... 03:30 Something that's very important for the body. 03:33 Now Nick, you like to ride your bike, but I know that 03:35 since you've had a child, you've had to slow down a little bit. 03:38 Yeah, you know, sometimes I have to move my exercise inside 03:41 on the floor with my 6- month-old, 03:43 and we play with his toys. 03:45 So today, we're not going to use the word "exercise." 03:48 We're going to use the word "movement." 03:50 I like that word, "movement" because everyone 03:52 can move the body parts, and I just want to sort of go 03:56 through some of the things that movement helps in the body. 03:59 A lot of people don't realize that movement changes the 04:03 blood vessels of every single part of the body it changes 04:08 because it enhances the ability of our blood vessels 04:11 to get bigger and get smaller, it makes them healthier. 04:14 The lining in the blood vessels is called the "endothelium," 04:17 so when we exercise, literally, we take better blood 04:20 with oxygen to every part of the body. 04:23 So exercise is a natural remedy, a treatment, a prescription 04:28 for every part of your body. 04:30 It helps people with dementia... not to get dementia, 04:32 and helps them to think better. Right 04:34 Good blood supply, they do better. 04:36 It helps your heart do better, lowers your blood pressure, 04:40 lowers the risk of heart attack. 04:41 It helps your lungs do better because you take deep breaths, 04:45 gets oxygen to every part of the body. Right 04:48 It keeps your bones better, Nick. 04:50 It keeps you from breaking bones because your bones are stronger, 04:53 the muscles get stronger around those so you are less 04:55 likely to fall... Now what were you going to say? 04:57 Well I was just going to say, a lot of people think that 04:59 they have to go to the gym to exercise; 05:01 they have to do something really difficult to exercise, 05:03 but it sounds like you're saying... simply moving, 05:06 getting up from your desk and walking around the building, 05:08 taking a nature hike at lunchtime - it's simple stuff 05:12 that helps get all these benefits. 05:14 But we have to put it in our day; in fact you know, 05:17 first we have to understand that we have a need. 05:20 We have a need to move. 05:21 When we're not moving, guess what? 05:23 Stress is put on the body. 05:25 When stress happens over a prolonged period of time, 05:28 things malfunction. Right 05:29 In fact, I've got a study here that came out from... 05:32 just to let people know, this is from Stanford Medical School, 05:36 and they studied people over a 6 year time and they found out, 05:39 this is very interesting, that the chance of people 05:44 not exercising rose from 19 to 52% of people 05:48 didn't exercise at all or move at all in women, 05:51 and in men it went up dramatically as well. 05:54 So this is part of the reason that we have our body 05:57 malfunction, more stress, more heart attacks, 06:00 more high blood pressure, lots of bad things happen 06:03 when we don't move, so it is a big problem. Right! 06:06 Now before we get on to more about exercise, 06:08 let's go back and talk about first aid a little bit. 06:10 We have a mask here; what are some of the things 06:13 that you need to do first when you come upon someone 06:16 who maybe is unconscious. 06:18 If you want to provide first aid, 06:19 what are some of the things that you're going to do first? 06:21 Well you know, that's a big question, 06:26 but a lot of people get scared. 06:28 And I want to first talk, well what do you do if 06:30 you see someone that's not breathing and not moving? 06:34 What do you do? What do we do? 06:37 Well, I think the very first thing I do when that happens 06:40 to me in a situation is I say a prayer. 06:44 I ask God for a miracle, and if He is going to use me 06:48 for the miracle, I ask to have extra strength and power. 06:51 So that's what I would do, a quick prayer. 06:53 I don't sit down and do a long prayer - it's very quick, 06:56 and get to the point, I want to help. 06:58 The next thing I do is, if you have a first aid kit 07:02 or a device, you want to always ask... you know, you've asked 07:05 for the Ultimate Prescription, the Ultimate Physician to help 07:07 you, but I want other people to help me as well. Certainly! 07:10 So I try to activate 911 or you can scream. 07:14 You know, if you have a phone, 07:16 you can dial 911, you can scream. 07:17 A lot of people, they're out in the field, 07:19 in their first aid kits, Nick, they now have these portable 07:23 cell phones that they can just turn on - so they can 07:26 call for help even if they're far, far away. 07:29 And then once a person... for the first thing, 07:33 you ask God for help, you try to get help on the way 07:35 either through a phone, yelling, send someone for help, 07:39 personal cell phone, call 911, that's the basics. 07:43 And then, the first thing is when a person is down 07:46 and not breathing and not moving, 07:48 you have to realize, you cannot really hurt that person. Sure! 07:51 Yeah, you have to be brave and start out with something. 07:54 And, they have some new first aid guidelines, 07:57 and pretty much the first aid guidelines 07:59 just say to start CPR. Okay 08:02 So you want to start CPR, and if you don't know where to 08:06 put your hands on the chest, there are some cards 08:11 that you can put in your first aid kit that show you 08:13 where to put it - over the xiphoid and you just start 08:16 pushing down on the sternum about 1-1/2 inches or so, 08:20 and you just do that as fast as you can while you're 08:24 waiting for more help. 08:25 A lot of times, that will help out... 08:27 You're not going to hurt that person by doing that. 08:29 Now, another thing we have that might be helpful 08:32 in the first aid kit is, after a while, if they're not breathing, 08:36 you know, you can actually blow some breaths in, 08:38 and this is a mask and it's not too hard to use. 08:41 You know, years ago, people used to do mouth-to-mouth. Right 08:45 Now, if you were passed out, how would you feel 08:47 about me doing mouth-to-mouth? 08:48 If I was passed out, I want any help you can offer. 08:51 Okay, so well you wouldn't feel bad with mouth-to-mouth? 08:53 No, but I understand that there 08:55 are a lot of reasons to use a mask. Right 08:57 Some of the other people don't like to do mouth-to-mouth, 08:59 and the reason they don't like it is because they can 09:01 spread germs, things can be contaminated; 09:04 all sorts of bad things could happen. 09:05 So, once someone is doing CPR and we move to that, 09:09 of course, there are many courses you can take, 09:11 but we pull out this mask and this mask is great to have 09:15 in a situation and you can put it out and it has a 09:18 valve on it and you can attach oxygen on it, Nick. 09:22 And you just push it out here and there's your mask, 09:25 and what you would do is, you would fit it over 09:28 like this on the mouth and then you could blow into that, 09:30 and you'd see the chest come up. 09:32 So this is a mask that keeps a person, safe, sterile, 09:37 and also helps get a tight seal, a tight seal over the airways. 09:41 You can't hear me very good when I do that... 09:43 And also if you wanted to hook up oxygen to that, 09:45 so this is the basics that you want to have in a first aid kit, 09:49 a nice mask like that is not too hard to get. 09:51 So today, we want to start on first aid. 09:55 We want someone not to be scared, call for help, 09:59 both heavenly help, as well as earthly help; 10:03 start CPR and if you want to learn more, of course, 10:06 take a course and have one of these in your bag 10:09 that you can deliver oxygen if needed. 10:11 Right, and what are some of the organizations 10:12 that offer CPR training? 10:14 If I want to take a course, who should I look to? 10:16 Oh, there are many... the American Heart Association, 10:18 the American Red Cross and you can go into the computer 10:22 and look on that, but they've made it much simpler, 10:24 and it's almost now to where you just give chest compressions 10:27 so many times and then you blow in and it's not very hard to do. 10:32 So every time we're together on "Ultimate Prescription," 10:36 we're going to be adding something that someone can do 10:38 to help serve the world because you never know 10:41 when a loved one or you might be in a car situation... 10:44 Tell me, you had something on a bike not too long ago. 10:46 Yeah, you know, I was out riding with some friends and we 10:49 came across a cyclist who was unconscious 10:51 on the side of the road. 10:52 And, you know, it's a scary situation, 10:54 but the first thing to remember is "don't be scared..." Right 10:56 Because, like you said, you can't really hurt 10:58 this person, they need your help. 10:59 So they need you to be active and involved in their care. 11:02 And so, he was breathing okay on his own and he had a pulse, 11:06 and we called 911 and then we just stayed with him. 11:10 And 911 came and picked him up, and he had had a 11:13 traumatic injury on his bicycle. 11:16 We were so thankful that God directed us 11:18 because we weren't planning to ride that way, 11:20 but we were so thankful that God directed us to find him. 11:22 You know, so first aid is just what it is... first aid, 11:25 and that can be many ways, so it's something that 11:27 we want to talk about because we want our viewers 11:29 to be able to serve people if they should need it. 11:33 And in fact, if we look in the chapter of Luke in the Bible, 11:37 Christ came and He ministered to someone's need 11:40 about 40 to 50% of the time, first - He didn't talk about 11:44 anything else - He ministered to their need, 11:46 and that need, hopefully, it won't be first aid, 11:48 but we're going to talk about a bunch of first aid scenarios 11:53 that we can talk to our views about where they can at least 11:55 have the basics of first aid, make a first aid kit, 11:58 and have a plan should someone get sick. 12:01 But Nick, I want to get back to what 12:03 we're talking about today. 12:04 Before we get to our questions, we talked about exercise... 12:08 helps every part of the body. 12:09 A lot of people don't realize, but last year an article 12:13 came out in the "Journal of Circulation," 12:15 and they studied two groups of people; 12:18 one group sat at a desk all day. 12:21 You know, people don't move around very much anymore. 12:25 They sit at desks, they do computers, 12:26 they might sit behind a television camera, 12:29 they might sit in a production room all day long 12:32 and they might not move. 12:34 And this study studied in "Circulation," 12:36 people that would get up and move around all day, 12:39 every hour - they did it every hour, 12:41 versus people that would do 45 minutes 12:43 in a gym and sit all day. Right, right 12:46 And the health benefits were greater for the persons 12:49 that would not exercise, but would just move around 12:52 the room every hour. 12:53 And when you move around the room every hour, 12:56 it increases your metabolism, speeds up, 12:59 insulin gets better. 13:00 One of the things you don't realize when you don't move, 13:02 guess what... the bladder doesn't move, 13:05 so you have more chance of getting urine infections 13:08 if you sit all day long. 13:10 The joints, if you don't move it - you lose it. 13:12 They get stiffer - the older you get, the stiffer they get. 13:16 All sorts of things go bad, your heart rate slows down, 13:20 your blood pressure changes, your metabolism changes, 13:22 so just moving around every hour 13:25 is very beneficial to their health. 13:27 So that's one thing I want to leave today with everyone, 13:29 at least move around every hour. 13:31 It doesn't have to be fancy, you can just stretch your 13:33 arms out, move every part of your body, 13:35 walk around the room and then sit back down. 13:38 That has a gigantic health benefit. 13:40 Now in this study, if you want to move on to the next step, 13:44 you can also do that and do 13:46 aerobic exercise about 45 minutes a day. Okay 13:50 And then they say - you can also do about 15 minutes 13:53 of resistance training like strength training, 13:56 and if you do that at different speeds, 13:58 you know, 6 minutes at one speed, 14:00 6 minutes at a different speed, do the resistance training, 14:03 do move around every hour, then you have really 14:06 helped treat your body with exercise, 14:09 a prescription that changes the entire body, 14:11 lowers the chance of infection. 14:13 You know, exercise, Nick... a lot of people don't realize 14:15 this, but it lowers the chance even of getting cancer. 14:18 Really? Yeah, it lowers the chance 14:19 of getting certain types of cancers; 14:21 lowers the risk of heart attack; 14:22 lowers the risk of diabetes; lowers the risk of dementia. 14:27 It does lots of good things to make you feel better. 14:29 So going to the gym is a good thing to do, 14:31 and getting your workout for half-an-hour or an hour 14:33 in the morning is great, BUT we need to supplement 14:36 that with moving every hour. 14:38 Yes, and remember, moving is a constant process. 14:41 We want to always be moving, you know, God didn't 14:44 design us to sit all day and not move. That's right! 14:46 We were designed... you know in the Garden of Eden, 14:49 there weren't a bunch of chairs! 14:50 We were designed to be moving around, 14:52 taking care of the animals, taking care of the earth, 14:54 moving all of our parts. 14:56 Now as we've gotten away from that model, 14:59 we sat and it puts damage and stress on the body, 15:01 then things start to mess up, 15:03 so that's one thing we want to focus everyone on today. 15:05 Well we'll be right back with some questions from our viewers. |
