00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm your host, Nick Evenson, and on today's program
00:04 Dr. Marcum and I are discussing food as medicine.
00:07 And specifically we're talking about beans, lentils,
00:11 all kinds of legumes.
00:12 And, Dr. Marcum, these are some powerful foods.
00:15 And I've got a fun fact about beans.
00:17 Okay, let's hear it.
00:19 I looked this up earlier, and it said that back in the 1980's
00:22 an archeologist working in New Mexico came upon a clay pot
00:26 that had been sealed with pine tar containing bean seeds
00:29 that were 1500 years old.
00:32 Oh! That's pretty old.
00:33 And after all that they planted them and they grew,
00:36 they sprouted. Wow!
00:37 So that's pretty impressive, you know.
00:39 The bean is very resilient.
00:40 Yeah, and they can grow, too.
00:42 Yeah, yeah. Also the world's largest bean pods can grow
00:47 up to five feet long.
00:48 And I'd be interested to see one of those.
00:50 So if you're sitting at home, and your know what I'm talking
00:52 about, it's called the E. gigas bean pod, and it comes from
00:56 Central America, in the tropics.
00:57 So if you're sitting at home and you know about this,
00:59 get on our website and contact us: HeartWiseMinistries. org
01:03 Tell us more about it.
01:04 I'd love to see one.
01:05 Wow! I'd like to see one, too.
01:07 That would be pretty cool; a huge bean pod.
01:09 Would you eat it?
01:10 Well, maybe. I don't know.
01:12 If some, if the local prepared it for me, you bet I would.
01:14 Well, if you ate it you might help get things like magnesium,
01:19 and iron, and potassium, which would help your
01:23 cardiovascular system.
01:24 It might lower your estrogen levels in your body,
01:28 which might improve your risk of getting breast cancer,
01:30 if you are a woman.
01:32 It might help improve your getting a clot.
01:34 We've talked about all the colorectal cancers.
01:37 So beans are a treatment for disease.
01:39 You know, you can prescribe beans as...
01:41 And I prescribe beans in my practice all the time.
01:44 Uh huh. Eat more beans.
01:45 Now one quick question.
01:46 You mentioned earlier about trace elements. Yeah.
01:49 Are these just some of the minerals that are found
01:50 in small quantities, or what are trace elements?
01:52 Yes, those are minerals that our body needs.
01:54 You know, like we don't need a lot of zinc,
01:56 but we do need it in our body.
01:58 Potassium, different types of magnesium, those are elements,
02:03 you know, Folate things like that, those are...
02:06 Iron would be considered, you know, those are natural
02:10 occurring elements, but we need it in our body.
02:12 Iron, of course, we need for our blood. Right.
02:14 You don't have iron you get anemic.
02:16 The prostate seems to need zinc.
02:17 So potassium and magnesium are needed for the nerve cells
02:21 in our heart, and different; every cell in our body
02:24 needs these chemicals.
02:25 So these are trace elements that we need to get from somewhere.
02:28 And unfortunately, you know, if we eat animals we get it
02:32 secondhand at best. Right.
02:33 You know, not as good.
02:35 So there's other things I want to talk about beans that
02:38 help us tremendously.
02:39 Yeah, what are some of the other conditions that
02:41 might be benefited?
02:42 If you are overweight beans can be a treatment for obesity.
02:47 Really? So would you rather have a gastric bypass surgery?
02:52 Would you rather take a weight loss pill?
02:54 Or would you rather eat more beans?
02:57 In fact, they studied this in 2012 in England, and the British
03:01 Journal of Nutrition pointed out that beans help lose weight
03:06 as much as caloric restriction.
03:08 Really? Yeah. Why would that be?
03:10 Well, I mean, I didn't read it word for word, but I think beans
03:15 help you fill up, so you're not as hungry,
03:17 so you don't eat as much.
03:18 It helps the chemistry in many other ways.
03:21 It helps speed up your metabolism some. Right.
03:24 So there's lots of things that beans help with.
03:27 So beans can help you lose weight.
03:29 Studies have also shown that beans help you
03:32 with your blood pressure; can lower blood pressure.
03:34 Is that because of the composition of protein
03:37 carbohydrates in it?
03:39 No, it's lots of reasons.
03:40 One is because of the fiber.
03:41 One... It probably works on multiple mechanisms.
03:43 It effects potassium, and the potassium effects
03:46 blood pressure. Okay.
03:47 And sometimes people that eat beans don't eat things that
03:50 raise the blood pressure.
03:51 We know that things that are processed, and preserved
03:54 raise blood pressure, because they usually have
03:56 higher sodium contents. Right.
03:58 And a lot of our potassium we get in, good potassium we
04:02 get in our vegetables.
04:03 A lot of people don't eat as many vegetables as we used to.
04:06 Right. We get valuable substances from the earth.
04:09 You know, that's why they call them elements,
04:11 because we get them from the earth.
04:12 These trace elements, these vegetables pull into them,
04:15 and what's a part of the vegetable in themself.
04:17 But I want to talk a little bit about the flora in the bowel.
04:21 You know, within you is this big tube that runs through
04:24 you that you pull nutrients out of, and it helps...
04:27 In the bowel you have good and bad flora, or the bacteria.
04:31 Right. There about, there's trillions of these in the bowel.
04:35 There's more DNA going on in the bowel than the rest
04:39 of the body combined.
04:40 And this DNA makes things, it regulates things.
04:44 So you've heard a lot about prebiotics, probiotics,
04:47 different things that regulates this biosphere, or this whole
04:51 zoological society that lives in our bowel.
04:54 It's scary to think of a trillion different things
04:57 living in your bowel that has DNA that are doing things.
05:00 It seems that there's a lot that could go wrong.
05:02 Yes, a lot could go wrong, but a lot could go right, too. Sure.
05:06 We know that people that eat fiber, and beans have fiber,
05:09 greens have fiber.
05:10 People that eat lots of fiber, when it gets into the bowel
05:14 it makes a chemical called butyrate.
05:16 And butyrate is the food that tends to feed our good flora.
05:21 So our good flora gets increased, so the good flora
05:25 helps keep out bad things.
05:26 The bad flora also tends to make inflammation,
05:29 and other bad things happen.
05:30 So just eating beans help your good flora grow.
05:33 When your good flora grows, less inflammation.
05:36 It regulates things that go in and out of our body
05:39 to a greater degree.
05:40 Even our brain chemistry can be improved when our
05:44 good flora improves.
05:45 Depression can come from the bowel.
05:46 Anxiety can come from the bowel.
05:48 Different chemicals like dopamine, serotonin.
05:51 So beans have an enormous ability to help our body
05:55 just from the fiber aspect, separate from the cancer aspect,
05:58 separate than the trace element aspects.
06:00 All of these things beans can help us with.
06:03 There's so many different ways that beans benefit us.
06:05 I'm going to write a prescription for beans for
06:07 you today, Nick, and you can go and eat some tonight.
06:10 Well, I will. I will for sure.
06:12 I hope so. Alright.
06:13 We're going to take a look now at a short clip from Dr. Marcum
06:16 quoting Bible Prescriptions for Life.
06:18 And then Dr. Marcum's going to share with us about that.
06:20 So let's have a look.
06:23 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life.
06:27 A patient with type 2 diabetes came in the other day and wanted
06:31 to take less medications.
06:33 I referred her to this Biblical Prescription
06:36 for Life found in Genesis.
06:44 When we walk, both physical walk and spiritual walk,
06:48 studies have shown it helps lower our blood sugar.
06:53 When we physically walk it helps our insulin receptors do better,
06:57 lowers the chance of developing long term diabetes.
07:00 When we walk with God, Dr. Andrew Newburg says that
07:03 that lowers some of the cortisol in our body,
07:06 which lowers blood sugar.
07:07 So if you want to lower your blood sugar naturally,
07:10 walk in nature, and walk with God.
07:13 I'm Dr. James Marcum, and this is your
07:17 Biblical Prescription for Life.
07:21 That's a really great message, Dr. Marcum.
07:23 And if you'd like to learn more you can visit the website:
07:30 And there's a special gift there.
07:32 You can download the free first chapter of the book,
07:35 and get a feel for it.
07:37 There's so many things that are important to our health
07:39 besides just nutrition.
07:40 You know, we're focusing on food in this show.
07:43 But tell us a little bit about Biblical Prescriptions,
07:45 and why this is needed.
07:47 Well, in this Bible Study what we've tried to do at
07:50 Heartwise Ministries is incorporate a lot of material
07:54 into something that's doable, that people can take
07:57 one step at a time. Right.
07:59 But it talks about things that we don't think about.
08:01 We spend one whole week talking about stress; why we're sick.
08:05 And then we go through the different principles
08:07 in the Bible that God can use to help us change our health.
08:10 Specifically we end in worship.
08:13 We show how worship changes our chemistry.
08:15 We talked about walking with God; how walking with God
08:18 changes our adrenalin, our cortisol,
08:21 our brains, even our DNA.
08:24 So this is a great tool to improve health.
08:26 It's also a great outreach if you want to reach out to your
08:29 friends and neighbors; help them lower their blood pressure,
08:31 help them maybe come off of medicine, lose some weight,
08:33 improve their mental health.
08:35 So Biblical Prescriptions, this is a great Bible study.
08:38 And you told them how to get it.
08:39 That's right. If you want to purchase your copy today,
08:41 you can call 3ABN. And they can be reached at:
08:47 Thank you so much for tuning in today.
08:49 We enjoy sharing this information with you.
08:51 And we pray that God will lead you towards optimum health.
08:54 Thanks for joining us.
08:56 And Dr. Marcum will close the program in just a
08:57 moment with prayer.
09:04 Sometimes I get a funny look when I write
09:07 beans on a prescription.
09:09 Take two times a day; dispense thirty.
09:12 People are now beginning to understand that beans are
09:16 definitely a prescription that they can apply to their
09:19 lives for better health.
09:20 You know, if you have questions I want to encourage you to
09:23 come to our website.
09:24 That's HeartwiseMinistries.org
09:27 Specifically look at the prayer page.
09:29 We have people praying for each other.
09:31 Because God can do things for our health that we can't
09:34 accomplish on our own.
09:35 With that in mind I want to have a prayer for you right now.
09:39 Dear heavenly Father, I want to pray for each person out there
09:43 listening to this program, that You be especially near to them.
09:47 Provide healing in their hearts.
09:50 Help them to feel calm, and secure, and safe in this
09:54 world that we live in.
09:55 And help them to realize that You are the
09:58 Ultimate Prescription for our lives, and for healing.
10:01 This is our prayer today, Amen.
10:07 Well, I hope everyone can find some way that they can
10:10 incorporate beans into their lives.
10:13 It might be as simple as taking some food and putting some
10:16 hummus with it, or it might be eating bean soup tonight.
10:19 But try to incorporate some good old beans in your life.
10:22 I think it's going to make your life better.
10:24 It certainly will make it more healthy.
10:26 I'm Dr. James Marcum.
10:29 And as we talk about beans, I want to wish you
10:33 the very best in health.
10:35 And we'd love to hear from you, so go to our website:
10:39 Until next time, I'm Dr. James Marcum wishing you
10:42 the best of health.
