00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm your host, Nick Evenson, and today we are 00:04 discussing food as medicine. 00:06 And we've been talking about ginger. 00:08 And I have to confess I made a mistake earlier. 00:11 See, we called this the ginger root, but I Googled it and 00:16 ginger is actually not a root, it's a rhizome. 00:19 What is a rhizome? A rhizome is an underground stem. 00:23 So it's actually not a root. 00:25 So it's a stem that grows under the dirt. 00:26 So it's a stem that grows underground. 00:29 That right, that's right. 00:30 And I also found out that this is native to Southeastern Asia. 00:35 I'm not sure if we import it, or we grow it here now, 00:38 but it originally came from Southeastern Asia. 00:40 You know, what I like about that, it seems like a little bit 00:43 of ginger rhizome... That's right!... goes a long way. 00:47 Yeah, yeah. You know, I've noticed, I put a little in my 00:49 mouth a few minutes ago, and I think my breath has improved. 00:52 I'm going to take your word for that. 00:54 Well, I think it could improve your breath, Nick. 00:56 I think so. Maybe I'll try some. 00:57 You know what I like to try to do? 00:59 It sort of gives you a tingly... Can you imagine? 01:01 It helps wake you up a little bit. 01:02 I'm going to kiss Sonya. 01:04 That's my wife. Your wife. 01:05 Yes, I'm going to kiss Sonya, and see if... 01:06 See if she likes the juice? 01:08 See if it does anything special. 01:09 You know, maybe it has something more than just 01:12 the inflammation? I don't know. 01:13 You should try that. 01:14 Yes, and for sure it cuts back nauseous. That's right. 01:17 So, anyway, interesting. We're off track. 01:21 On a more serious note, let's get back to 01:22 the task at hand here. Serious. 01:24 Ginger is very good for you; a lot of healing properties. 01:28 Are there any cautions? 01:31 That's a good word: cautions. 01:32 You know, when we use food as medicine, a lot of the cautions 01:37 come when we mix it with other medication, 01:39 prescription medications 01:40 The three prescription medications I think people need 01:44 to be careful when they, you know, if they're on those is 01:46 medicines that thin the blood, blood thinners, 01:49 blood sugar medicines that lower the blood, and grapefruit. 01:53 Those are things that tend to interact, you know, quite a bit 01:56 with different types of food systems that we might eat. 01:59 So ginger is one of those. 02:01 If you're on a blood thinner, ginger can actually make 02:03 your blood more thin. 02:05 So you have to be careful if you're on a blood thinner. 02:08 Another thing, if you're on blood sugar medicines, you know, 02:11 that lower your blood sugar, ginger can make your 02:13 blood sugar go too low. Uh huh. 02:16 So if you're on those types of medicines, 02:18 check with your doctor. 02:19 And again, calcium channel blockers, it seems to effect 02:22 calcium channel blockers, too. 02:23 Those are a certain class of medicines 02:28 that lower blood pressure. 02:30 So those we have to be very careful with. 02:34 And if you're ever in doubt, ask your doctor. 02:37 If you're ever in doubt find it on... 02:39 The Internet has lots of great sites. 02:41 You can certainly go to our website: HeartwiseMinistry.org 02:45 where we answer questions all the time from 02:47 viewers and listeners. 02:48 So ginger is very valuable as a way to treat certain diseases 02:51 like migraines, cramps, nausea, inflammation, as well as maybe 02:56 it can prevent problems too, like bad breath, in my case. 02:59 Right, right. Yeah, you certainly want to work with your 03:01 doctor to make sure that your blood doesn't get too thin; 03:03 if your blood pressure gets too low. 03:05 Right. All these things you want to make sure it doesn't 03:07 interact with medications. 03:09 Now we have questions that come in to our website sometimes, 03:11 HeartwiseMinistries.org 03:14 You can ask your question if you have one there. 03:16 But people often are asking about supplements. 03:18 You take this ginger root as a supplement? 03:20 No, I don't. I do not take that as a supplement. 03:23 I take that as treatment. Treatment? Okay. 03:25 So I take that as treatment for inflammation, okay? 03:28 And that's what I take that for. 03:30 Now I could take it just as part of my nutrition, 03:33 because I want to feel good, or I like the taste, 03:35 or it has nutritional benefits. 03:37 But I don't take it as a supplement. 03:38 So what's the difference between treatment and supplement? 03:40 How do you, how do you... 03:42 Supplements are for deficiencies. Okay. 03:44 If you have a deficiency you need a supplement. Uh huh. 03:47 If you don't have a deficiency then you 03:48 don't need a supplement. Right. 03:50 Okay? So I don't necessarily have to have ginger. 03:53 Because you don't need ginger to live. Right. 03:54 I use ginger as a treatment, like a prescription medication 03:58 to change my chemistry. Uh huh. 03:59 So a lot of people ask, Do I need supplements? Yeah. 04:03 And usually if you're on a whole food plant based diet you get 04:08 almost everything you need in the food we eat. Okay. 04:12 You know, you get your trace elements. 04:13 You get your phytochemicals, all that. 04:15 Now people that are on the standard American diet: 04:18 lots of processed foods, lots of meats, lots of dairy, 04:22 they often do need supplements because they don't, 04:24 might not get enough of the trace elements we talked about, 04:27 all the fiber that we've talked about, 04:29 all those good things we get. 04:31 But some people do need supplements. 04:33 And one of the most common supplements that are needed 04:36 is Vitamin D. Okay, sure. 04:39 And Vitamin D is actually a prohormone. Okay? 04:42 People that live in high altitudes, like in Fairbanks, 04:46 Alaska, or wherever, they don't get out in the sun. 04:49 They don't get Vitamin D. 04:50 So if you don't need Vitamin D I recommend a supplement. 04:54 Because you don't have enough of this much needed substance. 04:57 So if you didn't get enough sun exposure you're at risk 05:00 and might need to take a supplement. 05:01 Vitamin D is good for bones, brain, blood vessels, 05:05 many things that need Vitamin D; every cell needs it. 05:07 So what I recommend if you don't get out in the sunshine, 05:10 take D3, a supplement, 2000 international units a day. 05:15 Now you can certainly have your blood tested, but I take it in 05:19 the wintertime, because my D levels get low. 05:21 And when it gets low you get cabin fever, your serotonin goes 05:25 down, depression might go up, inflammation, different things 05:29 in the body that need Vitamin D; bones might get weaker. 05:31 So I think that's a supplement that most, 05:34 many people need to take. 05:35 Now if you live in Hawaii, probably not. 05:38 You'd get plenty of sunshine. 05:40 If you live in Ecuador, probably not. That's right. 05:42 But if you live up in Alaska, probably yes. Sure. 05:45 Okay, another supplement: B12. 05:47 Have you heard of B12? I have. 05:48 Okay. B12 is actually something that we need that's 05:53 not made by plants. Uh huh. 05:55 We need B12 to make blood cells. 05:57 It keeps us from being in anemic, 05:59 helps support our nerves, helps support our brain. 06:03 So if you eat a... Originally this is from a microbe, 06:07 that's found in the earth, that blankets the earth. 06:10 For awhile, you know, a lot of times our food source gets it, 06:13 but nowadays we don't get enough B12. 06:17 Now recently, I really don't eat much processed foods at all. 06:20 I used to get B12 in my fortified soy milk, 06:24 almond milk, that. Right. 06:25 You get it in fortified foods. 06:27 But if you don't eat processed foods very much, 06:30 you might not get enough B12. 06:32 So B12 is a supplement that most people need to take. 06:36 And most people take about 2500 micrograms. 06:41 That's a very little amount a week. 06:43 A little bit of B12 will go a long way. 06:46 Some people get it in fortified foods like almond milk. 06:49 Some people get it in... nutritional yeast has it in it. 06:53 So B12 is a supplement that many people 06:56 that are whole food plant based need. 06:58 Now if you use soy milk, almond milk, nutritional yeast, 07:02 you might not need that. 07:03 But I'm starting to take it now since I moved away 07:06 from processed foods. 07:07 I don't get it so much in that. Right. 07:09 What's something else that might be needed? 07:11 Iodine for instance, iodine. 07:13 Okay, what is that needed for? 07:15 That's needed for your thyroid. Okay. 07:18 Now most people get iodine because in the 20's they started 07:21 putting iodine in the salt we use. 07:23 So most people that eat some type of processed foods, 07:27 of salt, or something get plenty of iodine in their diet. 07:31 But there's a few people that don't eat any processed 07:35 food, any salt at all. 07:36 They might want to eat some iodine. 07:39 And you can get in different foods. 07:42 You know, seaweed is a good source of iodine, if you want it 07:44 in food, and there's other food that has a little bit. 07:47 But some people have to take a supplement for that. Sure. 07:50 Now another thing that people might want to 07:53 supplement is fiber. 07:55 Did you know we need fiber in our body, and we quoted it 07:58 earlier that 97% of people don't get enough fiber. Right. 08:01 So if you don't get enough fiber, and you don't like to eat 08:04 fruits, and vegetables, nuts, and grains, 08:06 you might need some fiber in your diet. 08:08 And you can get that in many different fiber substitutes. 08:11 So those are the supplements that, depending on your 08:14 situation, that some people need. 08:16 Now all these other things, food is medicines, you know, 08:20 you don't actually have to have to survive. 08:22 You know, they don't cause disease. 08:23 You know, so these supplements, people take it. 08:26 Now if you take too many supplements can it be bad? 08:30 Well, if you had 400 French horns in the orchestra, 08:33 French horns aren't bad, but sometimes you have too many 08:36 French horns and it drowns out the other instruments. 08:38 The orchestra wouldn't sound very good. 08:39 Right. And that happens when you take too much of a good thing. 08:42 Right. We've seen things like beta-carotene, and different 08:45 supplements that people load up on, and it actually messes up 08:49 receptors and enzyme systems, and then body 08:51 can't function normally. 08:52 So you can take things that maybe don't help you, 08:55 that you don't really need, that can actually hurt you, Nick. 08:58 So I thought that was very, that's a very good 09:00 question that people have. 09:02 There's some good answers about supplements, some good uses for 09:04 ginger that we've talked about. I like it. 09:06 But there's more to good health besides just nutrition. 09:10 And we've got a short clip of Dr. Marcum presenting another 09:13 Biblical Prescription for Life. 09:15 And let's take a look at that right now. 09:18 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life. 09:22 Many suffer now from upper respiratory infections. 09:26 These are usually caused by viruses. 09:28 Our Biblical Prescription for Life is found in 09:39 Did you realize that acts of kindness help improve our 09:43 body's immune system? helps us make oxytocin, and things that 09:47 help us ward off infections? 09:49 So just acts of kindness, like smiling, a helping hand, 09:53 a kind word, helping someone in trouble, or in danger. 09:57 These help improve our own immune system. 10:00 So to lower your risk of having an upper respiratory infection, 10:04 try practicing acts of kindness everywhere you go, 10:08 and make a stronger immune system. 10:10 I'm Dr. James Marcum, and this is your 10:12 Biblical Prescription for Life. 10:19 And if you'd like to learn more about Biblical Prescriptions 10:22 for Life, this is a seven week Bible study program. 10:24 There's a DVD and a study guide. 10:26 And you can learn about that at: 10:30 And you can also order your copy by calling 3ABN directly at 10:38 Dr. Marcum, thank you for sharing not only about ginger, 10:41 but also Biblical Prescriptions for Life. 10:43 Because there's a lot of different things that we can do 10:45 to live in accordance with the way God designed us. 10:47 Yeah, and people we're, it's not all about nutrition; 10:50 but all the inputs in our body, our belief systems, the way we 10:54 think, the things we do during life; whether we get up and we 10:58 move, the way we breathe, drinking water. 11:00 There's so much that includes health. 11:02 But the key that this program does, it shows that health 11:05 occurs when we have a relationship with our Lord. 11:09 He sort of helps us to heal. 11:11 He introduces that relationship that makes everything possible. 11:14 That's right.
