00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm your host, Nick Evenson, here with Dr. James Marcum.
00:05 And today we are talking about food as medicine.
00:07 Specifically we've been talking about hibiscus, and beverages,
00:11 and hydration, and that kind of thing.
00:13 And, Dr. Marcum, what else do we need to know about drinking
00:16 beverages that have healing properties?
00:18 Well, you know, we've talked about hibiscus.
00:23 And I like this study because they compared it
00:25 directly with the pill. Yeah.
00:27 And it showed it's just as good.
00:29 I'm drinking some tea here today, too.
00:31 And I like it because there's chemicals in that help my body.
00:36 And there's numerous studies on different teas out there;
00:39 none quite as good as the one on hibiscus.
00:42 But some of the studies have suggested that it
00:45 can help lots of ways.
00:46 For instance, there's an Asian study that was done that showed
00:50 that people that drank different types of teas can have a 30%
00:54 reduction in breast cancer. Wow!
00:57 And if the people want to do that,
00:58 that's a molecular, nutritional food.
01:01 And you can go to our website and I'll be happy to give you
01:04 the exact references of the studies
01:06 if you really want to see which study.
01:07 Another interesting study is different types of tea
01:11 can help with depression. Yeah.
01:14 So it helps with depression.
01:15 They've really studied that a lot with green tea quite a bit.
01:19 It decreases an enzyme called monoamine oxidase.
01:23 And this is an enzyme that breaks, you know,
01:26 we want to have less of this, because it helps the brain
01:29 chemical serotonin and dopamine. Right.
01:31 So there's some studies that showed drinking certain teas,
01:34 especially green tea, may help in fighting depression.
01:38 It may lift up your moods.
01:40 That's other. I saw another study that showed that certain
01:43 types of tea may help with Parkinson's and
01:46 movement disorders.
01:47 And it probably has the same type of ability to change some
01:50 of the chemistries, especially monoamine oxidase, which helps
01:54 some of the brain chemicals rise to a higher level.
01:57 I'd like to drink tea because there's been some studies that
02:01 show that it has a relaxing effect on your brain waves.
02:04 Yeah. So there's a lot of studies that show...
02:06 We're just learning a lot about it; that certain teas can effect
02:09 the way the metabolism, the chemistry of the brain works;
02:12 especially the alpha brainwaves change,
02:15 and it gives a calming effect.
02:17 So I've noticed that when I drink tea it gives me sort of
02:20 calming, relaxing effect.
02:22 I don't know whether it's due to a physical change,
02:24 or a belief system change. Right.
02:27 You know, if you believe something is helping you,
02:29 studies have shown that you can, it can help you as much
02:33 as 33% of the time.
02:35 It's called the placebo effect sometimes? or is it different?
02:37 Yes, that's what people call it,
02:39 but I like to call it healing beliefs.
02:42 It's a much more positive term.
02:43 Yeah. In fact, you know, talking about healing beliefs,
02:46 there was a true story of a gentleman that was in his 50's.
02:51 He went to his doctor, and they found on a routine CT scan
02:55 a small little mass on the backside of his liver.
02:58 And it was in a place that they couldn't really biopsy it.
03:02 Right. So they said, Listen, we're not going to take
03:04 the risk of the biopsy.
03:05 We'll just take an eye on it to
03:07 see if it's getting bigger.
03:08 Well, this gentleman was convinced that it was cancer,
03:13 and he was convinced that he was going to die.
03:16 And in one year, from them just keeping an eye on it,
03:20 he did pass away. Wow!
03:22 And they did the autopsy on him, and they biopsied this mass,
03:26 and it was a benign cyst.
03:28 And he didn't have anything in his body
03:30 that could have killed him.
03:32 There's no reason he should have died?
03:33 No! He believed he was going to die, and this was an
03:36 example of healing belief.
03:37 So, sometimes when we take something in, if we believe
03:40 it's going to help us, it does help us.
03:43 And that's why sometimes when you go to a doctor, you know,
03:45 they tell you the belief system.
03:47 You know, you believe it and it changes your chemistry.
03:51 Your brain responds to that.
03:53 So that might be part of the reason tea calms me,
03:55 because I believe it's calming me.
03:57 But there are some studies that show that it changes
04:00 the alpha waves in the brain.
04:01 So different beverages have different effects
04:05 chemically on the body.
04:06 We've talked about hibiscus tea.
04:08 There's others that might help in other things.
04:10 We're going to have more studies on this as time goes on.
04:13 And a good site, if you want to learn more about the different
04:16 types of teas and studies that have been done that prove it,
04:19 is nutritionfacts.org.
04:21 Dr. Greggor is a friend of ours that's been on our radio
04:25 program numerous times.
04:26 He's done a lot of research on all the studies that are out
04:30 there on different food products.
04:32 He's reviewed the literature.
04:33 And this is one site that I go to when I want to learn about
04:37 which foods have solid evidence that it helps.
04:40 Now I'm not saying other foods don't help, but this is so far
04:43 where we have the evidence.
04:45 Now a hundred years ago we didn't study food
04:47 like we're doing today.
04:48 But now people are looking for alternatives to change
04:52 the physiology of the body.
04:53 Well, let's talk about this a little bit more.
04:55 We've talked about some of the benefits of teas.
04:57 I know it's very popular for people maybe to drink tea in
04:59 the morning sometimes.
05:01 People also like to drink coffee in the morning.
05:03 Some people like to drink alcoholic
05:05 beverages in the evening.
05:06 But not all of these beverages are good for us. Yeah.
05:09 What is the best, absolute best thing we can drink?
05:12 Well, I think the best thing for us to drink is water.
05:16 Just regular plain old water?
05:17 70% of our body is made of water. Uh huh.
05:21 Now I know that some people like to flavor
05:23 their water, and that's okay.
05:25 You know, if you put lemon or something in the water it might
05:27 add some acidic component, and that can hurt
05:29 the enamel on the teeth.
05:31 Some people have the acidic component to help other things.
05:36 But water is the best beverage.
05:38 Every cell in our body depends on water. Yeah.
05:42 Water, lack of water, 70% of American's don't get
05:47 enough water every day.
05:48 When you don't get water in your body it puts stress on our
05:51 body, turns on the stress chemistry, turns on processes
05:55 like oxidation and stress.
05:57 It's the number one cause of daytime fatigue.
06:00 Drinking enough water will thin out the blood.
06:02 Drinking enough water helps every cell in the body;
06:05 helps our brain, our memory do better.
06:07 It helps every joint feel better,
06:10 because we need the lubrication.
06:11 It thins out the blood.
06:13 So water helps a lot of things in our bodies,
06:15 so I think water is the best beverage.
06:18 So then let's talk about the opposite side of the spectrum.
06:20 What would you say is maybe the worst beverage for us?
06:22 Oh boy, lots of bad beverages.
06:24 But you have to put alcoholic beverages up there at the top,
06:27 because they're associated with different cancers.
06:30 They make us not rest well at night; they're addictive.
06:34 Other beverages that might not be so good is soda pops,
06:39 You know? High fructose corn syrup in there?
06:41 Yeah, they have lots of that.
06:42 That's addictive. They have really, they don't really help
06:45 your body in any way, shape, or form
06:47 So that's a lot of information.
06:49 And there's lots, yes, there's lots of soda pops out there
06:52 of different varieties.
06:53 We're finding out that milk, you know, milk from a cow might not
06:58 be so good, because it has chemicals, dairy and different
07:01 things in the chemicals, and fat in the milk.
07:04 That might not be such a good beverage.
07:06 And yet all throughout the television and commercials,
07:11 have you seen that commercial about milk?
07:13 Oh, yeah. Got the milk.
07:14 Yeah, yeah, it's been in study.
07:16 In fact, nowadays the milk industry's been picking on other
07:20 types of alternative beverages like soy, almond,
07:23 other alternatives, because they said,
07:25 They shouldn't call that milk, because that's not milk,
07:28 that's another beverage.
07:29 Right, yeah. So I don't know.
07:31 But I think milk is not a great beverage for us either.
07:34 And that's just a few of them.
07:36 So alcohol, milk, soda pop, some of those might not be the
07:39 best beverages for us to consume.
07:41 But we definitely want to put water in our bodies. Yep.
07:44 I'm just going to stick with drinking mostly water.
07:47 That's a good plan.
07:49 And if you'd like to help yourself get back on track with
07:52 following God's design for your life, we've got a short clip
07:55 to help you get on the path there.
07:56 This is a Biblical Prescription for Life clip by Dr. Marcum.
08:03 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life.
08:07 Unfortunately, many people have high blood pressure today.
08:11 Well, our Biblical Prescription for Life comes from James.
08:21 Well, how was this a Biblical Prescription for Life?
08:25 There are so many inputs in the world we live in.
08:28 There's inputs from television, cell phones, media, radio.
08:34 How do we know who, or even what to believe?
08:38 Sometimes these inputs put stress on the body.
08:41 And guess what? The stress raises cortisol levels,
08:45 raises adrenalin levels, raises our blood pressure.
08:48 Well, when you're looking for answers, I want to invite you
08:51 to remember this text, this Biblical Prescription for Life.
08:55 James 1:5. Ask God for His help.
09:03 And you can learn more about Biblical Prescriptions and
09:05 following God's design for your life at:
09:11 The Bible study is made for a seven week group study,
09:14 and it contains a DVD, as well as a daily study guide.
09:17 And there's some great content in here that covers things
09:23 such as nutrition, water, movement; lots of great things.
09:27 Also worship. Yeah.
09:28 And, Dr. Marcum, what do you recommend for people about
09:32 Biblical Prescriptions?
09:33 Yeah, I think if someone's wanting to take steps,
09:36 one at a time, getting back to God's plan, using it to improve
09:40 their health, maybe as a way to reach their
09:42 neighbors and help them, even there's opportunities
09:44 to spread the gospel.
09:46 This is a great plan for people to kick off any type of
09:50 improvement in health.
09:51 Yeah, it also can be used for evangelism. Uh huh.
09:53 And if you'd like to get your copy you can do so

10:08 giving a few final thoughts.
10:14 Remember beverages can change your physiology.
10:18 We're learned about how hibiscus might be an alternative
10:21 treatment for people with high blood pressure.
10:24 And there's many other different types of teas and beverages
10:27 that are useful, but don't forget to drink your water.
10:32 If you have questions go to our website: HeartwiseMinistries.org
10:36 We have a prayer page there that's very useful.
10:39 And I want to close our program today in prayer.
10:41 Dear heavenly Father, please be with each person today.
10:45 We pray for healing in their lives.
10:47 Now go with us and give us Your power is our prayer, Amen.

10:57 I want to encourage you to pray for each other.
10:59 If you might have a prayer request, we'd invite you also
11:03 to write that down.
11:04 Until next time, I'm Dr. James Marcum, wishing you
11:09 the best of health.
