00:01 Welcome back. You're watching the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm your host, Nick Evenson, here with Dr. James Marcum,
00:05 and we're discussing food as medicine.
00:07 And more specifically on today's program, which is our 100th
00:10 program of Ultimate Prescription,
00:11 we're talking about beets and how they have some fantastic
00:16 medicinal properties, and how they can help us
00:18 live as God intended.
00:20 Now I wouldn't say beets are the ultimate prescription.
00:24 In our study that have been done, both in hypertension,
00:28 and in the British Health Foundation and others,
00:30 beets are a treatment especially for blood pressure. Right.
00:34 It might be used for trace elements.
00:36 And I guess the next time you and Leslie have a dinner party,
00:39 you can tell everyone, We're going to be serving beets.
00:42 Come on over! Maybe so.
00:44 I don't know. We don't eat beets too often.
00:46 Well, you could do great.
00:47 You could have beet juice.
00:48 You could have a beet salad. Yep.
00:50 And you can have a beet entree.
00:52 And we could teach you how to make some beet desserts.
00:55 You can have a... Oh, that would be great!
00:57 That sounds like a good challenge.
00:58 People would love it, love it, they would love it.
01:00 But, you know what, this is our hundredth program on beets.
01:03 On the Ultimate Prescription, not on beets.
01:05 Not on beets, but... No.
01:07 Yeah, we are focusing on beets today, right.
01:09 Focus on beets... But I want to thank everyone that's been
01:11 involved in this program through the years.
01:13 You know, a lot of people don't see all the people involved,
01:16 but we have people in the control room that are doing
01:19 all sorts of neat things, much more hard than
01:22 what we do out here. Sure, yep.
01:24 We have people running the cameras, and the jibs,
01:26 and directors, and people that do the sound, and graphics.
01:30 And Kristina who helped things.
01:31 So there's lots of people that help to bring this message about
01:35 the Ultimate Prescription to people.
01:38 And the Ultimate Prescription is not a beet is it, Nick?
01:41 No, definitely not.
01:42 No, the Ultimate Prescription that we want to focus on,
01:45 and everyone that makes this program is that relationship,
01:48 that unique relationship that we can have with our Savior.
01:51 Uh huh. That's the saving relationship.
01:54 That's what really heals people. Uh huh.
01:56 And if we can make this program, and people start thinking about
01:59 this relationship and give their hearts to Christ,
02:01 and renew themselves every day, that makes it all worthwhile.
02:06 Everyone that's worked so hard on these 100 episodes,
02:08 that's what it's all about.
02:10 And that's what makes us a little bit different than other
02:12 health programs, you know.
02:13 Other health programs might focus on the technical parts
02:17 of it, or the acute care, or some focus on the nutrition,
02:21 but we like to focus on the relationship with Christ.
02:25 Because that's really where the healing occurs.
02:27 Yeah. You mentioned earlier about healing beliefs. Yes.
02:30 You know in the Scriptures it tells us that God is going to
02:33 heal us and make us whole.
02:34 And we need to really believe that.
02:35 Whosoever believes in Me shall have everlasting life.
02:39 That is the Ultimate Prescription,
02:40 and that's what this program's all about.
02:43 Beets are a prescription. That's right.
02:45 Beets are not the Ultimate Prescription. That's right.
02:47 Not the most important anyway.
02:49 Some people don't like beets, you know? Yeah.
02:50 My son does the beet juice thing, but I don't think
02:53 he really likes it.
02:55 I sort of make him drink it.
02:56 He's sixteen years old.
02:57 And I said, Jake, it's going to make you swim faster.
02:59 So he gulps it down, but I don't think...
03:02 He threw up once when he ate it.
03:04 But I think he believed it wasn't going to be good,
03:06 so, you know, that self believing.
03:08 If it's not good, it's going to taste good,
03:09 it's going to make me sick.
03:11 So I think part of it was the belief that he
03:12 thought it wasn't good.
03:14 If I'd have put it in something else he might
03:16 have liked it more, so...
03:17 But I did the beet juice myself a bit, but I'm going to try to
03:21 start incorporating more whole beets rather
03:23 than just the juicing.
03:24 Try that, and I want you to have...
03:25 You will be a crowd pleaser if you have a whole beet
03:29 dinner party at your house.
03:30 A beet bean dinner party?
03:31 Alright, challenge accepted.
03:33 We're going to do it.
03:34 Do that for your friends.
03:35 Have them come over some Saturday night, and you have the
03:37 full beet, beet thing, and they'll be happy.
03:39 They'll lower their blood pressure.
03:40 They'll make some nitrates.
03:42 See how it... Let me know how it goes.
03:44 Alright. You know you just mentioned blood pressure.
03:45 And we have a question that just came in.
03:47 Someone's asking, What are some foods that
03:50 lower my blood pressure?
03:51 This is people who write in to our website at
03:54 There's an Ask the Doctor form there.
03:56 So you can contact us that way if you have a question.
03:58 But what are some foods that help with blood pressure?
04:00 Well, before I do that, a lot of people really don't
04:03 understand blood pressure.
04:05 So I'm going to talk a little bit about
04:06 what blood pressure is.
04:07 Blood pressure is when the pressure inside our blood
04:10 vessels is higher than normal.
04:11 Okay. Okay. So what's normal?
04:13 You know, number, normal, once we start getting above 130.
04:17 They call that pre-diabetic.
04:18 Above 140 that's... I mean pre-diabetic, pre-hypertensive.
04:22 But above 140, 150 it's starting to get higher. Okay?
04:25 And if it goes high for long periods of time, it damages the
04:29 blood vessel, you know?
04:30 And, for instance, weight lifters,
04:32 you know, when they do all that grunting.
04:33 Their blood pressure goes really high.
04:35 Long distance runners; sometimes if they're sprinting,
04:38 their blood pressure goes up for short periods of time.
04:40 It damages the blood vessels.
04:42 So any time the blood pressure is up day in and day out,
04:46 we call that hypertension. Right.
04:48 And when a person comes in with hypertension, I think of, Well,
04:51 that's more of a cause.
04:53 What causes it? Okay?
04:54 I don't think about, It's a symptom.
04:56 It's the symptom of a stressor. Right.
04:59 And the most common ones is the people's diet.
05:01 They eat foods that cause high blood pressure.
05:03 Foods high in fat, high in sodium, that's up there.
05:06 Some people carry a lot of weight and don't exercise.
05:09 That can cause it.
05:11 Some people are stressed out all the time.
05:14 That can cause high blood pressure.
05:16 And then there's medical causes that cause it.
05:19 So, like high blood pressure can be triggered by sleep apnea.
05:23 People don't sleep good at night.
05:24 They quit breathing.
05:26 They breathe like this...
05:28 They breathe like that.
05:30 So they don't get good oxygen.
05:32 Right, they don't get good oxygen.
05:33 When oxygen goes down your body makes
05:35 alarms to wake you up.
05:36 You're in an emergency state so you make adrenalin,
05:39 and cortisol, and both those raise your blood pressure.
05:41 You know, it's just kind of funny to watch you do that.
05:44 But it's not a funny condition if that's the future..
05:46 You get tired and you wear out.
05:47 It's a stressor. It raises your blood pressure.
05:49 Thyroid disease, kidney disease, different medical conditions can
05:53 raise your blood pressure.
05:54 Even certain medicines can raise your blood pressure.
05:57 So anyway, once a person has high blood pressure,
05:59 the key is to check it at home where they're nice and relaxed.
06:02 Because some people just have it because they get nervous
06:04 in the doctor's office.
06:06 We call that white coat hypertension. Right.
06:08 It's not really. It's they just get scared.
06:10 So you have some deep breaths, take it with the
06:12 appropriate sized cuff.
06:13 If it's high every single time, then see if you can find
06:17 out the reason why.
06:18 So some people's blood pressure will come down just by eating
06:21 less of the bad foods, the salty foods.
06:23 Some people will by exercise.
06:24 Some people have a medical...
06:26 But let's say you look at everything,
06:27 That no one can find it, and it's still high, okay?
06:30 Sometimes people can go to medications.
06:33 But we've learned that there's foods, and it seems like we have
06:35 proof, and I'm going to give the ones that have the
06:37 studies on it first. Okay.
06:39 But there's also other inductive reasoning that we can show that
06:43 other foods would lower it.
06:44 So we've talked about beets. Right.
06:46 Okay? We've also talked about hibiscus.
06:49 There've been studies with hibiscus that shows it
06:51 lowers blood pressure.
06:53 Greens, because it has nitrates lower blood pressure.
06:57 Flax has been shown to lower blood pressure.
07:00 Also different things like different fruits can sometimes
07:05 lower it a little bit.
07:07 But if you think about it, a lot of the foods that have nitrates
07:12 in them should be able to lower blood pressure, too,
07:14 even if the studies haven't been done.
07:16 So anything like the green foods that we talked about:
07:19 the arugula, the rhubarb, the cilantro, the leaf lettuce,
07:22 the greens; all of those that may have nitrates in them should
07:26 be able to help lower the blood pressure, too. Right.
07:29 Now some people that start eating more plants lower their
07:32 blood pressure, not only because of the plants, but they quit
07:35 eating all the other stuff that makes the blood pressure go up.
07:38 They fill upon the good stuff, and therefore they eat
07:40 less of the bad stuff.
07:41 Yes, and you know, things like salty foods,
07:45 and some of the processed foods.
07:47 All that stuff. And people don't realize it, but in some meat
07:50 products, they actually inject salt to make it more puffy,
07:54 and to keep it preserved.
07:56 You know, that's how people preserved things through the
07:58 ages is they put salt in it to preserve it.
08:00 Well, salt also gets in our body; we take too much salt,
08:04 our blood pressure comes up.
08:05 So I hope that answers the blood pressure question.
08:08 It's more complicated than just taking a beet to lower
08:14 the blood pressure.
08:15 You want to know why the blood pressure's caused,
08:17 look at all your options.
08:18 If you can get at the cause, then maybe you don't have to
08:21 eat as many beets, or whatever way you and your physician
08:23 decide to treat your blood pressure.
08:25 But blood pressure over long term is a chronic disease,
08:29 and it can damage your heart, it can damage your blood vessels,
08:31 it can damage your kidneys, it can damage your brain artery.
08:34 So we want to bring that blood pressure down.
08:36 Sounds like a good... I like the idea of eating the good stuff;
08:40 filling up on the good stuff, so you don't need,
08:43 or have the hunger for the bad stuff.
08:44 But if I can get people to eat more plants, exercise,
08:47 keep the stress down, deep breathing, usually their blood
08:50 pressure comes down pretty easily.
08:52 Well, we're going to take a quick look at a
08:54 Biblical Prescription for Life, and then we're going to
08:56 wrap up after that.
09:00 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life.
09:04 A patient came to the office the other day having quite a bit of
09:08 pain; already on two pain medications.
09:11 I recommended this Biblical Prescription from
09:21 Did you know that when we're laughing, when we're happy,
09:24 and when we're joking around, and we're feeling good,
09:26 it makes a chemical in our body go up called endorphins.
09:30 Endorphins are very helpful in fighting pain.
09:33 Endorphins also help lower stress chemistry,
09:36 and just makes us feel good.
09:38 So by laughing, and being happy, and joking guess what?
09:41 You increase your endorphins, and lower your pain.
09:44 This Biblical Prescription was given to my patient,
09:47 and guess what? He started having improvement in his pain
09:51 almost immediately.
09:52 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life.
09:58 You know, Dr. Marcum, there's so many ways, so many different
10:01 things that we can do to improve our health.
10:03 It's not just eating beets.
10:05 It's not just exercising.
10:06 Worship, singing, having a joyful spirit
10:09 is also part of it.
10:11 Yeah, and I wish I had a good joke to tell you.
10:13 I'd get your endorphins to go up, lower your stress,
10:15 lower your blood pressure, if I could make a good joke.
10:18 I'm going to work on that.
10:19 Yep. If you'd like to learn more about how you can experience
