00:01 Welcome back, and thank you for tuning in today to the
00:02 Ultimate Prescription where we're talking 00:04 about food as medicine. 00:06 And I'm your host, Nick Evanson, and here with Dr. Marcum. 00:08 And we've been talking about kiwi's. 00:10 And, Dr. Marcum, I've been sitting here looking, 00:11 kind of salivating a little bit over this kiwi. 00:13 It looks so good! Well... 00:14 Do you go grocery shopping much? 00:17 I'm going to go get some of these next week. 00:18 I am going more as time has progressed. Yeah. 00:22 And, you know, think of a store like a pharmacy. Uh huh. 00:28 You know, you're going in the pharmacy. 00:30 You have to get a bunch of things that 00:32 changes your chemistry. Right. 00:33 Well, when you walk into a store you have things that's going to 00:37 hurt your chemistry, can cause, we talked about inflammation, 00:40 hurt your body, maybe not help it. 00:42 And we've got lots of things that make it better. 00:45 And I have a lot of patients that say, Oh, there's... 00:47 I don't have as much variety, okay? 00:50 Well, if you go in the store, and I'm getting to the place 00:52 now where I like to try different types of greens. 00:55 Right. Different types of color; just to see if I like it. 00:59 You know? I don't know, have you ever had mustard greens? 01:02 I think I have. That will really clear your sinuses, 01:05 in addition to being a good source of nitrates. Right. 01:08 Have you ever tried rhubarbs? 01:10 And then I've got to where I like different 01:11 types of roots now. Uh huh. 01:13 I never used to eat roots, you know! 01:15 Would you eat a root? 01:17 I have some things that I see that I don't really know 01:19 what it is, and I'll give it a try, just because I've never 01:21 given a try, like some different types of things 01:23 from South America. Right. 01:25 And then the variety within the potato kingdom, you know, 01:28 you have all sorts of potatoes. 01:29 You have all sorts of beans out there. 01:31 You've all sorts of fruits. 01:33 Pears; did you know that there's several different 01:35 types of pears? Yeah, yeah. 01:37 And some of them are very good. 01:39 Some of them are quite good, yeah. 01:40 And I'm starting to like pears as much as I used to like some 01:43 other sweet things that I used to crave. 01:45 Uh huh. And different types of apples. 01:48 There's different types of grapes. 01:49 I'm not a fan of the seedful grapes. 01:52 I like the seedless grapes. 01:53 The seedless when they're... 01:55 Different types of melons, you know? 01:56 There's just a great variety. 01:58 So when you walk into a store, I want you to see that you're 02:01 walking into a pharmacy. 02:02 And you want to pick out grapefruits and vegetables, 02:05 nuts and grains, that make your body chemistry as good as 02:09 it can possibly be. 02:10 And also, if you have a chronic disease condition, learn about 02:14 these fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, that might help 02:16 treat chronic disease. 02:18 That sounds like a great plan, huh Nick? Yeah. 02:20 You, know, I'm going to go home and look in my refrigerator, 02:22 and if I don't see a rainbow variety of colors, 02:25 I'm going to go right to the shopping market and get 02:27 some new things to try. 02:28 You know, I said the word goji berry, 02:30 because I was thinking goji. Yeah. 02:32 I've never, I can't remember ever eating a goji berry. 02:35 I've heard of goji juice, but I've never seen a goji berry. 02:38 A couple of times I go goji berry, and the seeds, too. 02:42 You know, there's all sorts of seeds. 02:43 There's, you know, we eat pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds. 02:46 It's quite a variety. 02:47 Yes. Lots of different types of seeds you can eat. 02:49 And so there's a wide variety. 02:51 And it's usually all, they will all sort of keep the healthy 02:53 foods in one section. Uh huh. 02:55 And you want to spend more time in that section, 02:57 and the less time in things that are packaged in wrap. 03:00 And if you do have to go to the package and wrap section, 03:03 look at the labels, and try to get things with the least 03:06 amount of chemicals, the least amount of sodium, 03:09 the least amount of whole fructose corn syrup. 03:11 The least of that you can, and work that way. 03:14 And these are great steps to get you feeling better. 03:17 And, you know, just one step at a time. 03:18 You don't have to do everything at once. 03:20 That's right, just one step. 03:22 And that's the way you climb a ladder, right? 03:23 One step at a time. 03:24 I guess so, unless you can really jump up like a frog. 03:27 Yeah, sure. Not me, I don't go up on ladders much anymore. 03:30 Well, we've got some questions that are 03:31 coming from our website. 03:33 That's HeartwiseMinistries. org and we encourage you 03:35 to visit the website. 03:37 You can ask the doctor a question there. 03:39 You can request prayer for your health issue, 03:42 or you can pray for other people. 03:43 And there's lots of good health resources there. 03:45 So visit HeartwiseMinistries.org 03:47 And this viewer writes, My cholesterol is slightly elevated 03:51 and my doctor wants me to try a statin. 03:54 Are there any foods that I can eat to naturally 03:56 lower my cholesterol? 03:58 The answer to that question is, Yes. 03:59 But before I answer that question, you know, cholesterol 04:02 has been tied in to cardiovascular disease. 04:05 But a lot of people think, If my cholesterol's 04:07 perfect, I'm perfect. 04:09 Well, that's not necessarily true. 04:11 A lot of people think that if, you know, the cholesterol pill, 04:14 if there, you know, if they take that that's all they need 04:17 to do to prevent cardiovascular disease. 04:19 Well, that's not true either. 04:21 Now I put people on these type of medicines, statins, 04:24 based on their risk and benefits. 04:26 Unfortunately, some people have side effects on these statins. 04:30 It can hurt the liver, it can have memory problems, 04:33 there are different things that can happen with the statin. 04:35 It can also cause muscle pains. 04:38 So if you can get your cholesterol down naturally, 04:41 in your appropriate risk group, that's the best way to be. 04:45 Uh huh. Now what are things that increase the fats in the blood? 04:49 Animals increase it; has lots of fat. 04:53 Also we know that other things in the animal increase 04:57 the cholesterol as well. 04:58 So if you can stay away from animals, stay away from 05:01 processed foods, that will have you at the lowest risk. 05:05 But still some people have bad genes. 05:08 Their cholesterol is still high. 05:09 Well, there's some specific foods that have 05:11 been shown to help. 05:12 We talked about Brazil nuts. 05:14 Brazil nuts can lower cholesterol. 05:16 Flax can lower cholesterol. 05:19 Fiber, in different types of fiber foods, like greens, 05:23 can help lower cholesterol. 05:24 There is a substance out there called red yeast rice that has 05:28 this same chemical, HMG coenzyme reductase inhibitor, 05:32 that lowers it, too. 05:33 So there's lots of ways. 05:35 Oatmeal, fiber again can lower cholesterol. 05:39 So there's lots of ways we can lower cholesterol. 05:42 Exercise can help lower cholesterol. 05:44 And some people that are under lots of stress; stress tends to 05:48 cause problems as well. 05:49 So all of these are simple things, but even if everyone 05:52 does everything right, they still might have some bad genes. 05:55 And then that person sometimes the risk of a cholesterol 05:59 medicine is worth it. 06:00 You'll have to talk to your doctor. 06:01 Which of the patients I've put them on? 06:03 Well, people that don't have a side effect, that have bad 06:06 genes in their body. 06:08 I think it would help that type of person. 06:09 Or if you've had heart disease, and you don't have any 06:12 other risk factors. 06:13 Now you mentioned high fat diets, animal meat diets, 06:17 can cause problems for cholesterol. 06:20 Are nuts a problem, too? 06:21 Cause there's fats in nuts, but... 06:23 Usually if you eat plant based fats it's not a problem as long 06:28 as you don't overdue it. Okay. 06:30 Any, you know, they say you shouldn't eat more than about 06:32 15% of your total calories in fats. Okay. 06:35 Now you're going to talk to different nutritionists, 06:37 and read different sources, and it's going to tell you 06:39 everything in the book. Sure. 06:40 But this is sort of my understanding, and I sort of 06:43 have hung out with T. Colin Campbell. 06:46 I sort of agree with what he says, because it makes sense, 06:49 and also goes along with the Bible and other things 06:51 that we've learned. 06:53 Yep. We've got another question from a viewer who writes in and 06:55 asks, How can I treat nausea when I ride in the car? 06:58 Yeah. That's not a fun thing to experience. 07:01 No, it's never fun to be sick. 07:02 But ginger is a great way of treating nausea, okay? 07:07 Eat some, you know, a little slice of ginger. 07:09 You have different forms that you can put ginger in your body. 07:13 Ginger's also good for headaches, too. 07:16 It's good for inflammation. 07:17 So ginger has a lot of powerful benefits. 07:19 You know, you've heard of ginger ale when someone's 07:22 sick at your stomach. 07:23 Yep, I've had that. 07:24 It's the active ingredient is the ginger, not the sugar 07:26 in the drink. Right. 07:27 But it's the ginger that does it. 07:28 So if you get nauseated a lot, if you're pregnant, 07:31 if you're taking drugs that make you sick at the stomach, 07:33 if you're in a car that makes you sick at the stomach, 07:36 well taking in a little ginger might help you quite a bit. 07:40 And the ginger's not likely to interact with other 07:42 medications you might be on? 07:43 Well, if you're taking lots of it, and you're on medicines, 07:46 check with your doctor, because some of these can effect certain 07:49 medications, especially blood thinners. 07:51 So always check with your doctor just to be safe. 07:54 Alright, sounds like some good advice there. 07:56 And we know that there's a lot of other things that we can do, 07:59 other things that can help us achieve better health. 08:01 And we've got a short video by Dr. Marcum sharing another 08:05 Biblical Prescription for Life. 08:06 Let's have a look. 08:08 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life. 08:12 Did you know that there's a Biblical prescription that 08:16 lowers your chance of depression, and also helps lower 08:19 your chance of having a heart attack. 08:21 Well, that Biblical prescription is found in the book of Genesis, 08:24 and that's animals. 08:26 Animals help lower your risk of heart attack, and help improve 08:30 and prevent depression. 08:31 This is my dog Daphne, and she helps lower my risk. 08:35 Did you know we were supposed to take care of the animals, 08:38 and they were supposed to take care of us? 08:40 The Centers for Disease Control, the National Institute of Health 08:44 that publish articles which showed those with pets like 08:47 Daphne help lower those risks. 08:49 Well, who would have thought that God gave us Biblical 08:52 prescriptions at creation? 08:54 Well, He did, and I hope you have an animal that can improve 08:57 your chemistry today. 08:59 I'm Dr. James Marcum, and this is your 09:02 Biblical Prescription for Life. 09:08 You know, we've shared that clip in a few other places, 09:10 and people love to see the dogs. 09:13 They love your dogs. 09:15 I like my dogs, Maxwell and Daphne. 09:17 They are Shorkie's. Yeah. 09:18 Half Shih Tzu and half Yorkshire Terriers. 09:21 And they're about ten years old now. Uh huh. 09:23 And they help lower my stress. 09:25 God has given us so many ways... 09:27 You know, nutrition helps our bodies, but having love in our 09:30 life, having pets, having good relationships, there's so many 09:33 different ways that God touches a life. 09:37 And there's so many Biblical prescriptions that we can 09:39 apply if we do that. 09:41 That's right. And this is the Biblical Prescriptions for Life 09:44 DVD, and the workbook here. 09:46 And tell us a little bit about these. 09:49 Why should people be interested and get a copy of these? 09:52 Well, Heartwise Ministries has developed this as a program 09:55 to help people one step at a time not only improve their 09:58 health, no matter where they're at, because anyone can do it 10:01 no matter, even if you have the worst health in the world, 10:03 you can start somewhere. Right. 10:04 Well, this helps people understand why we're sick, 10:07 giving them simple things they can do to learn about 10:09 Biblical prescriptions. 10:10 And it's not all about nutrition. 10:12 We talk about being happy. 10:14 We talk about mental health. 10:16 We also talk about the physiology of worship; 10:18 how worship in itself changes the chemistry. 10:21 We talk about moving, and sunlight, and all these 10:24 different aspects that make up our chemistry. 10:26 We also explain how God has made us so complex. 10:30 And this is not only something you can do to help your friends, 10:33 neighbors, and families, but this is something that we can 10:35 spread the gospel with. 10:37 You know, go to your friendly neighbors. 10:39 People have gone and said, You want to lose some weight? 10:40 come off of medicine? lower your chance of blood pressure? 10:42 Why don't you come over to my house? 10:44 Put in this DVD; study this with me for seven weeks, 10:47 and at the end they find out how important worship is. 10:50 Listen, come on to the church with me, and worship with me, 10:53 and help grow this relationship you've had with Christ. 10:57 And as you do this all sorts of good things happen. 11:00 Because the key to this program is understanding that Christ 11:03 is the key to health. 11:05 Christ is the Ultimate Prescription. 11:07 When we have Christ in our life we have everything, 11:10 and He can help give us the power to make changes 11:12 one step at a time. 11:14 That's right. You know, in the book of Luke there's so many 11:16 examples of Jesus healing people; taking care of their 11:19 physical needs before pointing them into a 11:21 relationship with the Father. 11:22 If you'd like to get more information about 11:24 Biblical Prescriptions for Life, we invite you 11:26 to visit the website 11:30 or you can get your copy by calling 3ABN 11:32 direct at (618) 627-4651. 11:37 And we'd like to thank you for joining us on the program today. 11:40 I learn a lot every time I sit in this chair. 11:42 So thank you, Dr. Marcum. 11:43 And if you have other questions about today's program, 11:45 or other things health related, contact Dr. Marcum 11:48 through the website, 11:51 Dr. Marcum's going to close in just a moment with a 11:54 few final thoughts. 12:01 Next time you walk into the supermarket, 12:03 think about walking into a pharmacy. 12:06 All of those foods in there are going to change your chemistry, 12:10 some for the good, some for the bad. 12:11 But if you walk into where there's lots of fruits, 12:15 vegetables, nuts, and grains, that's going 12:17 to be your best bet. 12:18 And I hope you run into a kiwi fruit. 12:21 And remember that if you can take it two hours before you 12:24 go to bed it might help you sleep better at night. 12:27 It has a lot of effects in the eyes through lutein. 12:29 Kiwi's and other fruits and vegetables will help change 12:32 the chemistry of the entire body. 12:34 If you might have some questions, medical questions, 12:37 go to our website: 12:40 There's lots of information there that you can obtain. 12:43 I answer questions every day, but one of the most interesting 12:47 parts is the prayer section, where people not only leave 12:50 their prayer requests, but we also pray for each other. 12:54 I mean I want to spend some time in prayer today asking God 12:57 to bless each one of you, and lead you to healing. 13:00 Father in Heaven, there's so many people out there that need 13:03 you, that need healing. 13:05 Father, we want to pray that You be with them 13:07 at this very moment. 13:09 You know their needs and their wants. 13:11 And please continue to address these, 13:14 and walk in relationship, Father, with us. 13:16 And we want to thank You for being our Ultimate Prescription. 13:20 Thank You for this day, and for giving us life. 13:23 This is our humble prayer, Amen. 13:27 Thank you for joining me. 13:28 I'm Dr. James Marcum, wishing you the best of health. |
