00:01 Welcome back, and if you're just joining us,
00:02 thank you for joining. 00:04 We're talking about sources of truth 00:05 on today's Ultimate Prescription. 00:07 And, Dr. Marcum, I wanna start this segment off 00:09 with you telling the viewers, what is your favorite 00:12 number one recommended source of truth? 00:14 I think you kind of already did 00:15 but tell us one more time. 00:17 Well, you know, the number one source of truth, 00:18 as I've learned in time is the Bible for me. 00:22 Okay, the Bible is a source of truth 00:24 and the relationship that comes from the Bible 00:26 that God will show me different things 00:28 that I can do and I can, 00:30 you know, go this and this is a place 00:32 that I can base my treatment of all people with 00:35 and not only put hope for the short term, 00:37 but hope for the long term. 00:39 With that involved, recently, 00:41 we've developed a seven week Bible study 00:43 called Biblical Prescriptions for Life 00:46 and that can be found at the 3ABN website, 00:48 and that's another source that people can do 00:50 to get him in the word to help them find out 00:52 what truth might be in their lives. 00:55 And I found that as we get in the Word 00:56 and ask the God to, Holy Spirit to reveal truth 01:00 and to show us truth, 01:01 He helps open up every aspects of life. 01:04 And it might not only be health, 01:06 it might be finances, it might be relationships, 01:09 but our God is interested on every aspect of our lives 01:12 and He wants to help us on everything, 01:14 both for the short term as well as a long term. 01:17 So my number one source of truth is the scriptures. 01:20 Right. Now, let's... 01:22 I was gonna say, 01:23 let's change gears a little bit. 01:25 When people want to find health advice online. 01:27 And I know you have a few favorite places 01:29 that you like to direct people to. 01:30 What are some internet sources that people can trust? 01:32 Well, we're going to talk about internet, 01:35 but people come 01:36 with all different types of sources, 01:38 okay, I had one fellow 01:40 that came to the office every day 01:41 and said his Aunt Martha is his source of truth, 01:44 you know, so if he wants to know anything healthy, 01:46 he goes to Martha because she knows a lot, 01:48 you know, she reads a lot 01:50 and everyone has different sources. 01:52 Some people don't have access to the internet, 01:54 so the internet might not be a source, 01:56 that might be a person, 01:58 it might be an encyclopedia, 02:00 it might be a newsletter from somebody, 02:03 so those might be different sources, 02:05 but I say and people looking at those sources, 02:07 if it's Aunt Martha, or a friend, 02:09 or loved one, you know, 02:11 make sure it goes with the scriptures, 02:13 make sure it goes with science, 02:15 you know, test it with some modern science 02:17 is out there and then apply it to life 02:21 so, you know, it's very different. 02:22 Now the internet sources, 02:24 I've got some great sources that I use 02:26 and I'd share that with different people 02:28 with chronic medical conditions. 02:31 For instance, if someone is interested in diabetes 02:34 especially Type 2 diabetes, 02:37 of a source that I use is called 02:39 PhysiciansCommittee ForResponsibleMedicine.org. 02:44 That's pcrm.org. 02:48 And if I said it too fast, 02:50 you can just drop me an email at HeartWiseMinistries.org, 02:54 and I'd be happy to give you that again. 02:56 So that's a great one for diabetics that I use. 02:59 And I actually use one on nutrition. 03:02 Nutrition is constantly changing. 03:04 You know, everyone has a theory on that. 03:06 And I've been lucky enough through the years 03:08 that I've got to work with T. Colin Campbell, 03:10 who wrote "The China Study" and Dr. Esselstyn, 03:13 but one of the best sources that I use, 03:15 is one that what my friend Dr. Michael Greger 03:18 and he has a site called NutritionFacts.org. 03:23 That's NutritionFacts.org 'cause what Dr. Greger does, 03:27 is he looks at all of the studies 03:29 and all of the science on nutrition that's out there 03:32 and he look, does the research for me. 03:35 Now, what I like about his site is he's not selling anything, 03:38 so there's no money involved, you know, it's a 501c3, 03:42 he's not making money on any of the information 03:45 that he's giving out. 03:46 So I think it's always important 03:47 when you're looking at any source, Nick, 03:49 to look at, you know, where the money is flowing, 03:52 you know, someone making money off of it 03:54 and this and that. 03:55 Now, I'm not saying that people are making money 03:57 off the information is necessarily a bad thing, 04:00 okay, because people pay to see me in the office 04:03 and I give them information, 04:05 so there's a place for that but be leery of that, 04:08 you know, keep that in the back of your mind, 04:09 so that one's a good one for diabetics. 04:12 I would like to think that our website 04:14 HeartWiseMinistries.org 04:16 is a good site to give people a little bit of a balance, 04:20 you know, the balance of modern medicine, 04:21 you know, when might be a good place 04:23 to use modern medicine? 04:24 When might be good to use lifestyle? 04:27 But we also focus on our ministry is that 04:29 it's a relationship with Christ that we want to focus on first, 04:33 to lead us to these other places 04:34 so we don't fall off into these ditches. 04:36 There's so many people get into nowadays. 04:38 So I'd like to think that is a good source. 04:41 Another good source if you just want to improve 04:44 maybe eating better 04:45 and you want some practical things to do, 04:48 there's a website called PlantPureNation.com, 04:54 and this is a site I send people to 04:56 if they just want to start trying to eat 04:58 a little bit better. 04:59 It has recipes and places they can get meals 05:02 that, you know, let's say they have meals 05:04 that they can buy at the store now, 05:06 if they don't want to prepare it. 05:07 Different ways you can make things, 05:09 that's a really good site. 05:10 And there's so many other sites that are out there 05:12 that are excellent. 05:13 And if you have a great site that you would like to send me, 05:15 I'm always looking at more information 05:18 for balance sites that I can refer people to. 05:21 Now, the modern medicine sites, 05:23 there's lots of sites out there that give some information. 05:27 WebMD is a site that a lot of people go to, 05:30 that's a fairly solid site about modern medicine. 05:33 I tell people to try to stay away from fad sites, 05:37 you know, that they're trying to... 05:39 Like a lot of people wanna lose weight, Nick, 05:41 you know, there's all these fad sites 05:42 that are out there, you know, 05:43 use with this diet, that diet, this pill, that pill, 05:47 be a little bit careful when it comes to fads 05:49 'cause most things that are simple 05:51 that take a pill and you get well in one day, 05:55 you know, come on, you know 05:56 that's and same with treatments, you know. 05:58 If I have a treatment that's gonna cure all backs, 06:00 you know, there's some people out there, 06:02 they say those things. 06:03 Well, I have a cure that's gonna take away 06:05 everything in one day. 06:06 I would be leery about sensationalistic claims, 06:09 but everyone wants a quick fix for these problems, 06:13 but those are some of the sites 06:15 I use to help my patients do better and realize 06:18 that you gotta go with open eyes 06:20 and still some of these sites that I look at, 06:22 98% of what they say is great, but 2% is sort of fishy, 06:27 you know, so you have to question that, 06:30 you have to sometimes choose the good with the bad 06:32 and it's very complicated but just people, 06:35 if they stay in the Word and pray about it, 06:37 God's going to help them out. 06:39 And it's hard sometimes, but just do the best you can, 06:42 especially in the technology part, 06:44 there's so many new treatments, MRIs, PET scans, needles, 06:48 all these fancy pills that are out there, 06:50 all these genetic treatments that we now, 06:53 who should get genomic medicine practice on them, 06:55 it can be complicated at times but just stay in the Word, 06:59 He's gonna give you that peace to know, where you need to go. 07:01 Now, I imagine from time to time, 07:03 you have patients who come to you 07:04 with the diagnosis and a treatment plan 07:06 from another physician and they're not sure about it 07:09 and they want to find another option 07:11 or another perspective on. 07:13 What do you tell people in that situation? 07:15 Well, I try not to bad mouth other people, okay. 07:19 I try to say, well, there's different approaches 07:21 to different things, okay. 07:23 And here's the approach that I use, you know, 07:27 I try to understand the acute problem, 07:30 you know, and treat that, treat the symptoms 07:32 but also if we can figure out what causes the problem, 07:35 do that but also focusing on our relationship with God, 07:39 the worship part of it. 07:40 So I said, if this might be a plan 07:42 that you like to do, 07:44 you know, let me help you out with that. 07:46 Some people come and say 07:47 "No, I don't want to do any of that" 07:48 and that's okay, you know, 07:50 we can choose what they want to do 07:51 but I said sometimes there's a good, better, best, 07:54 and in my opinion, not my conviction 07:57 that right now what I know 07:58 this is what I'd recommend for you. 08:00 And some people say, 08:01 "No, what I've looked at a truth, 08:03 it doesn't go with my definition, 08:05 a belief system." 08:06 And belief systems are important 08:08 'cause what I found, Nick, is that one-third of people 08:11 if they believe a treatment is gonna help them, it does. 08:14 Yep. 08:15 There's healing beliefs, that's important, 08:17 you know, in all aspects of life, 08:19 we call that the placebo effect. 08:21 So you have to take in account 08:22 when you treat somebody their belief system as well. 08:25 And that's why I incorporate a spiritual aspect of me, 08:28 'cause for me, that's the core 08:30 of what I do that's different than other people. 08:33 So I add that in there and some people accept it, 08:35 some people don't and that's okay, 08:37 I'm still gonna love them and we can politely disagree. 08:40 Sure, yeah. 08:42 you know, I'm gonna go to one question 08:43 submitted from a viewer on our website. 08:46 They're asking, "Is the new blood thinner Eliquis safe? 08:50 What's your thoughts on that? 08:52 Yeah, that's, you know, blood thinners are important 08:54 for different medical conditions 08:56 and everything is about the risk of the medicine 08:59 versus the benefits. 09:01 And I talk to patients every day. 09:02 With some people that are at high risk 09:03 for blood clots. 09:05 I had a friend that recently had a blood clot in his leg 09:08 because he didn't get up and move 09:09 when he traveled a lot. 09:11 Well, on him, he ended up on this medicine 09:13 because the risk of that clot traveling to his lungs 09:16 and causing a fatal pulmonary embolism 09:19 was higher than that medication. 09:21 But my goal would be to teach him 09:23 if there's something he could do, 09:25 you know, exercise, move every hour, 09:27 you know, make sure that clots gone 09:29 so he wouldn't have to take the medicine 09:30 the rest of his life. 09:32 Some of us have bad genes 09:33 and we have bad things that happen to us 09:35 and medicines are worth the risk 09:36 even long term. 09:38 So that discussion has to be made 09:39 with your doctor, 09:41 will look at all the literature out there 09:43 realizing that things change over time. 09:45 The practice of medicine that I'm doing now 09:48 is different than it was 27 years ago. 09:50 The medicines, the focus, it's changed dramatically 09:53 and you want to have a physician 09:55 and knowledge source that constantly changes 09:58 and learns new things 09:59 'cause truth does change over time, 10:01 based on new information, new discoveries, 10:04 truth does evolve. 10:05 Yeah. 10:06 Well, we've got a free offer 10:08 that I want to mention to our viewers at home. 10:09 We have a free guide to walking in the light. 10:12 And light and truth in the scriptures 10:13 are often interconnected there. 10:15 And so we want you to download this free guide 10:17 to walking in the light 10:18 at BiblicalPrescriptions.com /light. 10:22 And there is some great information there 10:24 that really encourage you to live in the light 10:26 and have a better understanding of the truth that God gives us. 10:29 Yeah, and this is an important topic, 10:31 you know, 'cause, you know, every medical program, 10:34 you know, usually has an agenda, 10:36 you know, some are trying to sell a product 10:38 or push something. 10:39 Well, we're trying to push this relationship with Christ 10:42 as a solution to the world's problems. 10:45 And, within that there's truth and we can find truth 10:48 to that relationship and we can help spread it 10:50 to one another. 10:51 This is a great thing for us to think about today. 10:54 Yeah, Dr. Marcum, thank you 10:55 for sharing with us about truth. 10:57 We hope you've enjoyed this discussion 10:58 and join us at HeartWiseMinistries.org 11:01 to find more sources of truth. 11:03 Stay with us as, Dr. Marcum, 11:05 will close with a prayer in just a moment. 11:14 It's important for each one of us 11:16 to look for truth in life. 11:18 We can't wear someone else's truth, 11:21 we have to find truth ourselves in our heart, 11:24 and I hope that we've thought about this today 11:26 and that's something you're looking for. 11:28 I'd like to pray for you right now. 11:32 Heavenly Father, please be with each one of us 11:34 and help us to find truth 11:36 that you write in our hearts, Father, 11:38 'cause You are the truth that sets us free 11:40 and help this truth not to be something 11:41 that we accept from someone else, 11:43 but something that You put in our hearts 11:45 that we believe. 11:47 Thank you this day, Father, 11:48 for being with us and giving us hope 11:50 for the future is our prayer. 11:52 Amen. 11:54 I want to thank you for joining me today 11:55 on the Ultimate Prescription. 11:57 If you might have a question or need a prayer, 11:59 go to our website HeartWiseMinistries.org. |
