00:01 The following program presents principles designed
00:02 to promote good health 00:04 and is not intended to take the place 00:05 of personalized professional care. 00:07 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:09 are those of the speaker. 00:10 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:13 about the information presented. 00:15 You don't have to live at the North or South Pole 00:17 these days to suffer from lack of sunlight. 00:20 The trend in most developed countries around the world 00:22 is that more and more of us work inside all day long, 00:25 reducing our exposure to the natural light 00:27 that God designed for us. 00:28 But just how significant is that to our overall health. 00:31 Stay tuned and find out in just a moment. 00:54 Hello and thank you for joining us today 00:55 on the Ultimate Prescription, 00:57 a program dedicated to helping us better understand 00:59 God's design for our lives and experience better health 01:02 by following His plan. 01:04 I'm your host Nick Evenson here with Dr. James Marcum 01:07 for another installment of the Ultimate Prescription 01:09 in which we'll be sharing on the significance 01:11 of living in light. 01:13 Dr. Marcum, welcome to the program. 01:14 Thank you, Nick. 01:16 It's nice being here and I'm not in the office today 01:18 and it's a... 01:20 It's always a challenge to be on the set with you. 01:22 Let me tell you why? 01:24 Okay, all right. 01:25 How do two fellows, okay, 01:28 that hopefully God is using for Him, 01:32 make these programs interesting for people like you out there, 01:36 you know, we don't have 01:38 these gigantic sets that we have, 01:40 you know, how can we make this so it touches someone's life 01:44 and it blesses them, 01:45 and it's something they can use if they have a medical problem, 01:48 that they can use it for an acute medical problem 01:50 as well as something that can help them 01:52 with their lifestyle change or may be something 01:55 that will bring them closer to God. 01:56 Well, what can two people do to accomplish that, Nick? 01:59 What's your answer to that question? 02:01 Should we be more funny? 02:03 Well, I'm no comedian so maybe not. 02:04 I'm not either. Should we smile more? 02:06 Yeah, absolutely, that's a great thing. 02:08 Yeah, we can smile more but, you know what? 02:09 The real answer is God, 02:12 you know, and those watching 02:14 is we want God to be the light of their life, 02:16 to open up these truths that is in the Bible 02:20 and help us understand 'cause I'm learning every year, 02:24 you know, I can really think back 02:25 and I've been coming to Three Angels Broadcasting 02:28 and doing programs for quite a few years now. 02:31 And I can look back at all I've learned through the years, 02:34 you know, and someone told me the other day 02:36 that you're looking older, 02:37 you know, I am, I guess I bet. 02:39 You know, as the years go on, 02:40 I've been doing cardiology for 27 years, 02:43 and I actually see patients every day, Nick. 02:46 Well, getting older beats the alternative, right? 02:48 Yeah, I guess so but the nice thing 02:50 is you get wiser as the years go by, 02:53 the body doesn't feel as good, 02:54 little things come up that I wasn't expecting, 02:57 you know, and I don't know if you've noticed 02:58 that you're still a young man 03:00 but as the years go on, 03:01 you start growing things that you don't know 03:03 where they came from, you know. 03:05 You know, like hair in my ear, 03:06 it grows more in the ear than on the head now. 03:08 You know, the nose 03:10 and little bumps come up with me 03:11 and a patient asked me the other day is, 03:13 "How can I know whether this bump is serious?" 03:15 You know, I said "Well, is it turning colors? 03:18 Is it growing? Is it causing pain?" 03:20 And if the answer is no, 03:21 then chances are you're in pretty good shape. 03:24 So today we got a very important topic. 03:27 Yeah, before we get to the discussion about light. 03:30 Light in the Bible is also referred to as truth, right? 03:33 So we want to point people back to the Bible 03:36 and through the website HeartWiseMinistries.org, 03:39 that is a site that you've helped construct 03:43 to point people back to biblical principles 03:44 and I kind of think of it. 03:46 Yeah, and we don't want this program 03:47 just to be a one and done. 03:49 We want to develop a relationship with people 03:51 that they can grow, that we can grow, 03:54 we can have friendships and they can go to the website 03:57 and have their prayers answered, 03:59 they can go and contribute to the website, 04:01 they can have their medical questions answered, 04:04 you know, we don't enter into a relationships 04:05 so that we can point people into certain directions. 04:08 We want to continue this relationship. 04:10 We also have a monthly newsletter. 04:12 That's right. 04:13 And you can find all of these resources 04:15 at HeartWiseMinistries.org. 04:18 You can request prayer, submit your health questions, 04:21 join our monthly newsletter, 04:22 where Dr. Marcum writes a monthly message 04:24 of encouragement and hope, 04:25 and we just encourage you to join our newsletter 04:28 and visit the website. 04:29 And we actually have a question 04:31 that we're gonna start this program off 04:32 that came from a viewer and they write in, 04:34 "Dr. Marcum, recently my doctor prescribed 04:38 a medication for depression. 04:39 Are there any other options?" 04:41 Yeah. 04:42 Well, that is a great question, 04:44 and one of the things that this program 04:46 has tried to do through time is meet people's needs. 04:50 And a lot of people have specific questions 04:53 regarding specific things. 04:55 And remember, there's not a black and white 04:57 for every situation, 04:58 so every situation is different. 05:00 So this person is wondering to know 05:02 whether they need a medicine for a specific condition. 05:06 And that's a question I get quite a bit, okay. 05:09 And I'm gonna answer this generically, okay. 05:14 If you have a situation that you can make the chemistry 05:18 of the body change so you don't have depression, 05:20 the answer would be, maybe not. 05:23 And, lot of depression is due to a lack of a chemical 05:26 called serotonin in the body. 05:29 And if you can increase the serotonin levels, 05:32 maybe you don't need to do that. 05:34 And we can increase the serotonin levels 05:36 many different ways, one of them is being outside. 05:39 You know, through the years 05:41 we don't get out as much as we used to. 05:43 In fact it's estimated, 05:44 I know that your dad lives way up high. 05:46 Where does he live, Nick? 05:48 He's up in Fairbanks, Alaska. 05:49 Yeah, did you know that the higher we get north, 05:51 the less sunlight we get? 05:53 Sunlight's important for the production 05:55 of the body to make serotonin. 05:58 So that's very important 06:00 so, people that live north, they don't get outside, 06:02 they have the highest rates of depression 06:04 and actually suicide than people that live down 06:07 in the beach area. 06:08 Have you ever seen anyone 06:09 that's depressed going to the beach? 06:11 Nope, not. Pretty happy faces. 06:13 I mean, you start... 06:14 When you get out in the sunlight, 06:15 you know, all of the sudden these levels go up, 06:17 you feel really, really great and powerful. 06:20 So serotonin's good, 06:21 also we're now learning that the bowel, 06:24 you know, the food we eat 06:25 affects the expression of all these precursors 06:28 which turns into these brain chemicals 06:30 that our body needs. 06:31 You know, some people just get depressed 06:33 because of the situations in life 06:35 and that's sometimes cognitive therapy can help. 06:38 Worship can help those things. 06:40 So the answer to that question is yes, 06:42 a lot of times if you're working 06:44 with your physician, 06:45 he can get you off of these medicines 06:47 if he can treat the other way 06:48 in a holistic way, that they can do that. 06:51 Now, some people have genetic defects, Nick, 06:53 that they have genetics and no matter what they do, 06:56 they can't change what we call the core genetics. 06:59 You know, they don't make it, 07:00 okay, no matter what they do, they can't make it. 07:02 The genes aren't there. 07:03 So no matter what they do to the epigenetics, 07:06 the lifestyle, they can't change that. 07:08 So there's a small number of people 07:10 that might benefit from taking these medications. 07:13 But it's very interesting and as I see, 07:17 unfortunately sometimes the quick thing is that, 07:19 you know, oh, let me have a quick fix, 07:21 you know, here take a pill, let me give you a bill. 07:24 And unfortunately sometimes we don't spend enough time 07:27 understanding the reason why. 07:29 I'm helping people get at these causes, 07:31 but I've seen in my practice many instances 07:34 where people have been proved 07:35 by doing these lifestyle changes 07:37 before we get put on pills for "genetic problem." 07:41 Yeah. 07:42 But, you know, in the Biblical Prescription's 07:44 study videos, 07:45 we have actually a patient case study 07:48 and we've prepared a video. 07:50 Let's take a look at that and hear the story about Sarah. 07:54 Sarah was in the dark. 07:56 She was also three weeks 07:59 after the birth of her fourth child. 08:02 I was seeing her because she had a history 08:03 of an abnormal heart rhythm that we had successfully, 08:07 surgically ablated. 08:09 Her heart was doing just fine. 08:11 But I could tell something was wrong. 08:13 She was not herself. 08:15 The fourth child was quite a surprise 08:17 for the now 40-year-old. 08:20 After talking to Sarah, I realized she was depressed. 08:23 All the symptoms were there. 08:24 Not sleeping, no energy, not happy, not eating, 08:29 no interest and very pessimistic. 08:32 She was living in darkness. 08:35 This was not the Sarah I knew. 08:37 She'd seen her family doctor who wanted to try 08:39 a popular antidepressant. 08:42 I reviewed depression with her 08:43 and how it changes the entire body, 08:45 and I also talked about the antidepressant, 08:47 how it changes her too and she decided not to do that. 08:51 I asked her if she was going outside. 08:53 She was not. 08:54 I explained to her how the sun was needed 08:57 for Vitamin D, 08:58 a prohormone to help all the chemical reactions 09:01 throughout the body. 09:02 This includes bone health, our immune system, 09:05 cardiovascular health, and brain health, 09:08 which affects depression. 09:09 Basically we need Vitamin D for every cell. 09:12 This prohormone helps our body make serotonin, 09:15 a much needed neurotransmitter. 09:18 We measured Sarah's Vitamin D levels 09:20 and they were woefully low. 09:21 We simply gave her some supplements, 09:24 had her go outside for 30 minutes 09:25 three times a week while walking and guess what? 09:29 In a few weeks she was back to the Sarah we all knew. 09:32 She was literally walking in the light. 09:36 She learned a new truth 09:38 and how to apply that truth to her life. 09:41 Instead of reaching for a prescription pad, 09:43 I reached for a biblical prescription for life. 09:47 Sarah was spared of medication 09:49 that would just treat the depression 09:51 without addressing the underlying cause. 09:55 What's even more alarming is the medical community 09:58 is continually uncovering side-effects of medications. 10:03 Well, it's simple. 10:05 Our Creator designed us to be outside, 10:08 outside in the light. 10:10 Sun is needed for our body to function at its best. 10:14 This is part of the original design, 10:17 without the sun stress on the body occurs. 10:20 In Sarah's case, lack of Vitamin D 10:22 was decreasing serotonin which triggered depression. 10:26 Sarah learned that light changed the chemistry, 10:28 the physical being of her body. 10:31 She also learned that light, 10:33 truth is also important for the body as well. 10:38 That's just a great story about another biblical prescription 10:41 being applied that had a massive impact 10:43 on someone's life. 10:44 And I just wanna remind viewers 10:46 if this is something you're interested, 10:47 the Biblical Prescriptions for Life Bible study 10:49 is available and contact 3ABN about that. 10:52 Dr. Marcum, this was a patient of yours. 10:54 Yeah, and I still see Sarah and she is raising... 10:57 You know, she had a child late in life, 10:59 so there's some challenges 11:00 that was a little bit of a surprise 11:02 but when she got over that surprise, 11:04 got out into the sunshine, her depression is better now, 11:07 but now she realizes that all these things of life, 11:10 you know, staying indoors too much is a stressor, 11:14 and if you have genes that are predisposed 11:16 to having problems, it can activate problems. 11:19 So she learned how important sunlight. 11:21 Now some people can't get into sunlight 11:23 and they benefit by taking Vitamin D, 11:25 D3 specifically. 11:27 In the winter time, 11:28 I actually take 2000 international units 11:30 of D3 every day. 11:32 So I have to take it 'cause I don't get outside, 11:34 I spend a lot of time indoors as well, 11:36 and my Vitamin D level goes low and serotonin, 11:39 so light is very important. 11:41 Not only the things we do know 11:42 but the things that we don't know. 11:44 Yeah. 11:45 Now, we're continually expanding our knowledge about 11:48 all different areas of health. 11:50 Tell us real quick, what do we know about 11:52 and what do we not know about light? 11:54 Well, we don't know a lot about light 11:57 but think about it is that light, 11:59 sunlight is a source of energy. 12:01 Not only for us but for our whole planet, 12:04 you know, the sun, the plants, photosynthesis, 12:08 the food we eat, 12:09 the energy to make us go comes from the sun. 12:12 That's the energy that sort of drives things. 12:15 Also darkness is not good, okay. 12:18 Darkness is the absence of light. 12:20 We can think of the spiritual things as, 12:22 is light is the truth 12:24 and the absence of truth is darkness, 12:25 but we want to live in light. 12:27 Absolutely. 12:28 Within light so we can see the spiritual 12:29 and the physical coming together. 12:31 Well, God created the sun for a reason. 12:33 We have plants for a reason, 12:35 and when we don't get out in the sunlight, 12:37 when we don't see this, things happen to us 12:40 whether we understand them or not. 12:43 Sun's a source of energy for our lives. 12:45 So what we found out that now we're learning 12:47 that the sun not only does Vitamin D, 12:50 but it also can penetrate some of our deep organs. 12:52 Right. 12:54 And the sunlight can go not only the skin, 12:55 but it can go deeper into us 12:57 and there's different types of sunlight 12:59 and, yeah, we think, we hear all the bad things 13:01 about the sun. 13:02 You know, you stay out too long, 13:04 you get sunburn and that, 13:05 but we don't hear as much about the good things 13:08 and I admit too much sun is dangerous 13:11 but sun and being outside in God's nature, 13:13 getting that energy source from the true source. 13:16 So light's important for our physiology, 13:19 but also the light that comes from God's truth 13:22 is important for our brain physiology, 13:24 our core physiology just as well. 13:26 So when you're outside, 13:28 I want you to think about the light the truth 13:30 and how that also benefits your physiology. 13:32 Isn't this sort of interesting? Yeah. 13:34 Isn't that cool? It's great. 13:35 You know, how the God's truth also changes our physiology, 13:38 but so does sunlight. 13:40 Yeah. 13:41 I'll tell you, we're gonna take a quick break, 13:42 maybe run outside and get a bit of sunlight 13:44 and then join us right back here 13:45 in just a moment. |
