00:02 If you're just joining us, today's program is about light, 00:04 and how living in the light can benefit our health. 00:07 Dr. Marcum, did you step out 00:09 and get some light this morning? 00:10 Well, you know it's the weather was a little bit cold. 00:13 But what I am doing right now, 00:15 you know, we talked about 00:16 how we can make this more interesting for everybody, 00:18 I'm gonna give myself a hug. 00:19 Oh, there you go. 00:21 I decided to give myself a big hug. 00:22 And I want everyone out there to give themselves a big hug. 00:26 This helps your body out. 00:27 When you give yourself a hug and you relax these muscles, 00:30 more circulation goes to your brain, 00:33 you feel better so I want everyone... 00:34 You can give yourself a hug. 00:35 Nice little kind of stretch there. 00:37 Yeah, give yourself a stretch, 00:38 stretch it all out 00:40 as you're watching this program about light to stretch it out, 00:42 move around and, 00:45 you know, that'll help you feel a little bit better. 00:46 Get the circulation going, make some endorphins. 00:49 Turn down some of the stress in the world and light, 00:52 it's so important. 00:53 And I want to ask everyone out there. 00:56 Can you remember the last time you went outside 00:59 and enjoyed it, and had some of the peace? 01:01 And everyone think for a second, 01:03 think sometime in your life when you went outside 01:06 and felt the sunlight on your brain 01:08 and you felt it going into your body 01:10 and that sunlight, 01:11 the different waves penetrating your deep organs 01:14 turning on serotonin, 01:16 that warmth, that energy source. 01:18 You know, when you eat food, 01:19 the light that helped photosynthesis, 01:21 you mean photo makes things, 01:24 the light that makes things happen. 01:26 And also when you feel that light, 01:27 think about the truth, 01:29 and how darkness goes away, 01:30 and how God's truth changes our physiology too. 01:33 Yeah. I just think that's amazing. 01:35 I want everyone to think 01:36 about the last time they went to sunlight. 01:38 Dr. Marcum, I want you to share with us 01:39 what is your best memory, 01:41 the most beautiful light you've ever witnessed? 01:43 What was your memory? 01:45 Wow, there are so many instances. 01:46 I grew up in a little town in Florida called Avon Park. 01:49 And I can remember, we never spent time inside, 01:53 you know, we were out all day long 01:55 in sunlight and getting sunlight, fresh air 01:59 and nowadays as I've gotten older, 02:02 I have less time to do that. 02:03 But I can remember in general, just going outside, 02:05 playing down by the lake that I lived on, 02:08 just being outside all day long, 02:09 enjoying the health benefits of the sunlight, 02:12 that's some of my greatest memories as growing up. 02:14 And I'm gonna try to do that as time goes on. 02:17 As I get older, 02:19 every chance I can get outside in the sunlight, 02:20 I'm gonna try to get outside in the sunlight. 02:22 And not only I'm gonna feel the warmth 02:24 and the physiology of that light, 02:25 but I'm also gonna use that sunlight 02:27 to remind me of the truth that God gives me. 02:30 And when God gives me that truth, 02:31 that light that He gives me in the Word, 02:33 I'm also gonna remember, 02:34 well, one of those biblical prescriptions 02:36 is to get out in the sunlight. 02:37 He created the sun, 02:39 He created the sun to give us energy, 02:40 to give us food sources to make us feel better. 02:43 I'm gonna plug into both of that 02:44 and how the physical and spiritual works together. 02:46 Yeah, one of my favorite experiences. 02:49 When I was in college, I took a year off and taught PE 02:51 at an elementary school in Hawaii. 02:53 A real mission field there. 02:55 Yeah, that's tough place to be, Hawaii. 02:56 But it was fantastic. 02:57 I spent a lot of time playing out in the waves 02:59 in the ocean. 03:00 And one of my favorite memories was Friday afternoons 03:03 going out to the beach, do a little surfing, 03:05 but then 03:06 when the sun would go down, everyone else would, 03:08 you know, leave and I sat there and just float in the waves 03:10 and watch the sun go down as the Sabbath hours began, 03:12 and that was just an amazing experience 03:14 in a way to welcome the Sabbath 03:15 and really soak in just beautiful sunsets 03:18 and really enjoy the light. 03:19 So you, how long were you in Hawaii, Nick? 03:22 Just for one year. 03:23 Hey, did you see any of those Hula Hoop girls? 03:26 The dances. 03:28 Did you ever see that? 03:29 I didn't go to any of those, 03:30 but that they're around everywhere. 03:32 Because you know, you hear I've never been to Hawaii 03:33 but you hear about all the interesting places, 03:36 they say it's so beautiful there. 03:37 Yeah, it really is, 03:39 natural beauty is everywhere in the islands there. 03:40 Okay, now we're digressing. 03:42 We were talking about light 03:43 and we talk about medical topics, okay. 03:45 That's right. 03:46 Before we go back to light though... 03:47 Yeah. 03:49 We do get a lot of different questions that come in. 03:50 So we want to take a moment, 03:52 kind of diverge from light for just a second. 03:53 Okay. 03:54 Someone's written into the website and asked, 03:56 "What patients might benefit from the medication Entresto. 03:59 Did I said that right, Entresto? 04:00 Yes, that's Entresto, that is a great medication 04:03 to use for certain classes of people. 04:06 I use it in people that have heart failure 04:09 that keep going into heart failure. 04:10 And heart failure where the heart gets weak, 04:12 it can't pump enough blood 04:14 and frequently the fluid backs up in the lungs. 04:17 And first, of course, 04:18 I would try to find out the reason why. 04:20 Okay, and that's why light fits in here 04:22 because the reason why, we want truth, 04:24 you know, not only truth in this world, 04:26 but we want God to help shine light to understand, 04:29 well, why is the heart week 04:30 and understand that there is a place 04:32 where modern medicine is beneficial. 04:35 But in addition to using that medicine Entresto 04:37 in certain people, 04:39 it helps the heart do a little bit better, 04:40 maybe get enough strength and the way it does this, Nick, 04:43 is it blocks. 04:45 When the heart gets weak, 04:46 the body makes chemicals that respond to the weakness, 04:50 and these chemicals are called stress hormones. 04:52 You know, we heard of adrenaline, 04:54 angiotensin, different stress hormones 04:56 and this Entresto block some of those chemicals 04:59 that our body makes because our heart's week. 05:02 In a certain subclass of people, 05:04 this is very beneficial 05:05 because these chemicals make the heart even weaker. 05:07 Okay. 05:09 You know, it's like, you know, it's like beating something, 05:10 you know, you have a muscle there 05:12 and you keep hitting it on the head 05:13 with these stress chemicals, that's not good for the heart. 05:15 Right. 05:16 Okay, of course you want to get it the reason why, okay. 05:19 But in addition, 05:20 there's modern medicine that can help. 05:22 Entresto is one of these medicines 05:24 that's just come out 05:25 that can be very beneficial to this. 05:27 But I wouldn't stop there. 05:29 I would say, "Well, what else can we do 05:31 to limit stress in our lives?" 05:32 And maybe this person 05:34 doesn't get out in the sunlight? 05:35 Well, maybe sunlight would be something 05:37 that would help lower their stress chemistry well. 05:39 Maybe it would help them feel better. 05:41 Maybe it would help them make some chemicals. 05:44 The vitamin D metabolizes every cell makes it, 05:46 if it's not making it, 05:47 that would put at least a little stress, 05:49 so maybe being outside getting vitamin D would help, 05:52 maybe a D3 supplement if they can't go outside. 05:55 But then I wouldn't stop there. 05:57 I would say, you know, some people have weak hearts 05:59 and no matter what happens, you know, genetically, 06:01 maybe they're not gonna get better physically. 06:04 But I'd say, the true says, 06:05 that when we have a savior 06:08 that no matter what happens in our lives, 06:09 no matter how bad health gets, He can help us forever. 06:13 And I would introduce him to that truth 06:16 and that might help them lower their fear in their life 06:19 and their anxiety about things 06:21 and that might also improve their health. 06:23 So the physical and the spiritual go together, 06:27 and they can understand that no matter how bad it gets, 06:29 there are some things that we can't change 06:31 because we have bad genes. 06:33 And as we walk in that relationship, 06:34 and we see the place for medicine, 06:36 the place for lifestyle changes, 06:37 as we stay on that path with him, 06:40 things start to make sense. 06:41 So that's how 06:42 I would use Entresto in some people, 06:44 but I would also introduce them to these other things 06:47 that also might improve their healing process. 06:49 Yeah, that's really interesting. 06:51 Does that make sense? 06:52 Yeah, the drug Entresto actually reduces the stress. 06:55 It blocks stress chemicals on their heart, 06:58 it blocks specific ones, but there's other ways 07:00 we can lower stress chemicals too, 07:02 like exercise. 07:04 It makes endorphins, 07:06 not worrying, deep breathing, there's, 07:08 you know, anything, that lower stress in the body 07:11 potentially helps the heart. 07:13 So if we're stressed out 07:14 by not getting out in the sunlight, 07:16 that might help us. 07:17 Also, if we live in darkness, you know spiritual darkness, 07:20 and that's stressing us out 07:22 because I think we were all made 07:23 to have a savior. 07:25 And as we find our Savior, 07:26 that's another stressor that we can relieve. 07:29 And as these things come together, 07:31 our short term health on earth improves, 07:34 but also our health for eternity is assured. 07:37 That's really interesting to hear physiologically 07:39 what's happening 07:41 through these different interventions, 07:42 whether it's a prescription medication 07:44 or just a lifestyle from the biblical prescription. 07:46 Well, our ministry is gonna do a worship study 07:49 where we're studying what 10 minutes of worship 07:52 will all do to the genetics, 07:54 and we're getting the preliminary work 07:56 that's been done by others that show yes, 07:58 worship changes our body, 08:00 turns down these stress chemicals helps, 08:02 it feeds the brain 08:04 so the part that turns down stress gets bigger 08:06 and that's very exciting research 08:08 that we're going to see in the next future years. 08:10 Can you imagine a treatment saying, 08:11 well, when you worship God 10 minutes a day 08:14 that intervention, 08:15 that's just as effective as a pill 08:18 in lowering these stress chemicals, 08:19 so it can help your heart, 08:21 it can help all these medical conditions 08:22 when we come to God in worship. 08:24 But not only does it help the short term, 08:26 but it's a solution to the long term bad genes 08:29 that we were born with. 08:30 Yeah, that's fascinating.
