00:01 The following program presents principles
00:02 designed to promote good health 00:04 and is not intended to take 00:05 the place of personalized professional care. 00:07 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:09 are those of the speaker. 00:10 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:13 about the information presented. 00:15 You probably already know this, but here's a good reminder, 00:18 over 70% of the earth surface is covered with water 00:21 and roughly 50% to 60% of our bodies 00:24 are made up of water. 00:25 It seems like such a widely significant part of our lives, 00:30 but how much significance do we give it 00:32 when choosing what to pour into our cups. 00:34 Stay with us on today's program 00:36 and learn just how much 00:37 you can actually benefit from drinking water every day. 01:00 Thanks for joining us here today 01:02 on the Ultimate Prescription, 01:03 a program dedicated to helping us better understand 01:06 God's design for our lives and experience better health 01:09 by following His plan. 01:10 I'm your host Nick Evenson 01:12 and I'm joined by Dr. James Marcum. 01:13 And on today program, 01:15 we're gonna be talking about the importance of water 01:17 and how it can benefit every cell in our body. 01:19 Is that right, Dr. Marcum? 01:21 Yes, we are, Nick. 01:22 And the reason we choose some of these topics 01:24 is because a lot of people don't realize 01:26 the importance of it. 01:28 You know, we talked about things like movement, 01:30 we've talked about nutrition. 01:33 And one of these things we talked about is water 01:35 'cause if we don't get enough water in our body, 01:37 it puts stress on us, accelerates aging, 01:41 and it has a lot of bad things. 01:42 The cells are predominately made of water 01:45 and if we don't get enough water, 01:46 bad things can happen rather quickly. 01:49 Yeah. 01:50 Now you are a practicing cardiologist. 01:51 Yes. You're not a TV doctor. 01:53 No, no. 01:54 So in cardiology, water, 01:55 I'm sure, it's very important to our bloodstreams, 01:57 you probably talk about this with patients quite regularly. 01:59 Well, I do 'cause it regulates the entire body. 02:02 You know, now if someone has a weak heart, 02:04 they have to be careful 02:05 with how much water they bring in, 02:07 but water helps then the blood, 02:09 water helps every cell of the body do better. 02:12 When we prescribe a medication, okay? 02:14 For instance, the medications many of them 02:16 are metabolized in the kidney. 02:19 If the kidney doesn't get enough water, 02:21 it doesn't work as well. 02:23 So 1 milligram dose doesn't get execrated 02:25 become a 2 milligram dose. 02:27 So kidney function is tied to water consumption, 02:30 brain function, you know, ties in with water. 02:34 Even something as common as fatigue 02:36 can come in with water. 02:38 If you're walking in a desert, don't get any water, 02:41 you can be chronically fatigued. 02:43 Right. 02:44 So a lot of people don't realize 02:45 how fast dehydration can cause a problem. 02:49 Yeah. 02:50 Now Heartwise Ministries is the name of our non-profit 02:53 that we do the health education through. 02:55 And if you would like to visit our website, 02:56 HeartWiseMinistries.org is the site you can visit. 02:59 There's a lot of resources there 03:00 that we try and make available to folks. 03:02 There is a prayer form 03:04 where you can list your prayer request, 03:05 there's a newsletter you can sign up 03:06 and receive a monthly message of hope and encouragement 03:09 from Dr. Marcum regarding your health, 03:11 and there's a lot of programming there as well 03:13 that you can watch and read and share with your friends, 03:16 and share on social media and that kind of thing. 03:18 So visit the website and there is also place 03:21 where you can ask a health question. 03:22 And one of Dr. Marcum's team or Dr. Marcum himself 03:25 will kind of give you some advice 03:27 to point you in the right direction. 03:28 And we've received a question here 03:29 talking about something 03:31 that you just mentioned actually, Dr. Marcum. 03:33 The person says, "I've been so tired recently, 03:35 is there some specific testing I should undergo 03:37 considering my state of fatigue?" 03:39 Yeah. 03:40 Well, being tired is, lot of people have it, okay? 03:43 And one of the things that can cause fatigue 03:46 is just not drinking enough water. 03:47 Yeah. 03:49 You know, it's estimated that 03:50 that's the number one cause of day time fatigue, 03:52 is just being dehydrated. 03:54 So simple. Yeah. 03:55 We drink a lot of other things, you know, 03:58 water should be added to that list 03:59 as the high priority. 04:02 Other things that can cause fatigue 04:04 is not getting enough rest at night, 04:06 medical conditions like sleep apnea, 04:09 diabetes, certain medications, an underactive thyroid, anemia, 04:15 you know, all sorts of chronic medical conditions 04:17 can cause fatigue like malignancy. 04:19 So there's many different causes of fatigue, 04:22 you need to see your doctor. 04:23 But, you know, 04:25 if you wanna do something simple, 04:26 try drinking a little more water, 04:27 see if it gets better. 04:29 So that's a very important thing to think about 04:31 as we get tired. 04:32 All of us do get tired from time to time. 04:33 Yeah. 04:35 Now you've written recently a seven-week Bible study 04:37 called Biblical Prescriptions for Life. 04:39 And there's a lot of great resources there 04:42 to help point us back to biblical truths 04:44 and help us live in line with the way God designed us. 04:47 But we've got a story there from that study 04:49 that we wanna share, 04:51 a video about someone who didn't drink enough water 04:53 or plan their workout quite accordingly. 04:55 Let's have a look. 04:58 Mark was an excellent athlete, 05:01 and he prided himself for staying healthy, 05:04 he particularly enjoyed 05:05 riding his bicycle long distances. 05:08 Now one Sunday, 05:09 in the heat and humidity of an August summer day, 05:13 he set out on an 80-mile bike ride by himself. 05:16 He usually didn't do this, but he really wanted to ride, 05:19 so he left his home at about 8:00 in the morning 05:21 and an hour to the journey, he realized 05:24 he left his water bottles at home. 05:27 Well, he decided to venture on anyway 05:29 and as he felt pretty strong that morning, 05:32 but about an hour later 05:33 he had an unforeseen problem with the chain on his bike. 05:37 And it took him about an hour 05:39 to repair the chain, 05:40 and then he started moving forward again. 05:42 By now it was starting to get hot 05:44 and Mark was thirsty. 05:46 Unfortunately, there is no close houses 05:48 or easy water access. 05:50 Well, he decided to ride onward. 05:53 Now by 11 am that Sunday morning, 05:55 the temperature was in the 90s 05:58 and his metabolism was increasing, 06:00 the temperature of his entire body 06:02 was going up. 06:03 We call this hypothermia. 06:05 He kept riding but eventually he had to stop 06:07 because he was sick. 06:09 Mark got weak, he was vomiting, 06:11 he was having a hard time forming coherent thoughts, 06:15 he wasn't in good shape at all. 06:17 Eventually, a car came by and stopped to help Mark 06:20 who was crumpled on the ground. 06:23 Well, this good Samaritan wisely called an ambulance, 06:26 and Mark was immediately rushed towards the hospital. 06:29 There a group of doctors, nurses, and others, 06:32 including myself, began to care for Mark. 06:36 By that time 06:37 he was experiencing multi-organ failure. 06:40 When he got to the hospital 06:41 his temperature was 105 degrees, 06:43 his blood pressure was 68/40, 06:46 and his heart rate was 160 beats a minute. 06:49 He was breathing 30 to 35 beats a minute 06:51 and he couldn't even think clearly. 06:54 Unfortunately, 06:55 Mark was carrying no medical information, 06:57 he didn't even have a contact number on his person. 07:00 And the paramedic was looking through his bike 07:02 and eventually found a driver's license 07:04 tucked away in one of the bags on his bike. 07:07 Mark was not doing well, 07:10 he needed every cell in his body 07:12 to improve quickly, or he was gonna pass on. 07:15 Initial testing revealed Mark was in renal failure 07:18 with a condition called rhabdomyolysis. 07:21 Now this is a fancy word 07:22 that means the muscles just breaking down 07:25 and this caused a condition called metabolic acidosis. 07:29 Fluids were given, cooling blankets, ice, 07:32 and support for every system was begun. 07:35 Well, Mark was out of it, 07:36 didn't understand what was happening, 07:38 he was delirious, 07:39 his brain was having the effects 07:42 of the dehydration as well. 07:44 Because of the renal failure, dialysis was begun, 07:47 and Mark was sick for two weeks in the hospital. 07:50 But thank God, Mark recovered. 07:52 Before he left the hospital, 07:54 I reminded him that water is fundamental 07:57 and necessary to life 07:58 and every cell in our body needs water. 08:01 Now Mark takes water with him everywhere he goes. 08:05 You know, drinking water seems like 08:07 such a natural thing that you would think to do 08:09 and like it seems kind of absurd 08:11 that someone would have such a serious condition 08:13 just from not drinking water. 08:15 Yeah, that's a very dramatic story. 08:18 But as I remember what happened that day to Mark, 08:22 I remember, you know, without water 08:24 things happen very quickly. 08:26 And it's been estimated that up to 70% of people 08:31 don't get enough water every day. 08:33 And let's say, you know, Mark was the far extreme, 08:35 you know? 08:37 So he didn't have any water, 08:38 everything started to malfunction. 08:40 Remember, water, the universal solvent, 08:42 all of our cells depend on water, 08:44 that they need water, it's important, you know? 08:48 But some of us, 08:49 you know, might get half of what we need 08:51 or 70% but we don't get all. 08:53 And when we don't get the water we need, 08:54 it puts some type of stressor on our bodies. 08:57 Again, we talked about how stress ages the body, 09:01 it changes the metabolism, 09:02 it changes every cell in the body. 09:04 So something as simple as water 09:07 can make some dramatic impacts. 09:10 Now let me just go through 09:11 some of the organ systems, Nick? 09:12 Yeah. 09:14 You know, water is important for digestion, 09:16 you know, you need the mucous membranes moist, 09:18 you need things moving through you, 09:19 you need some water for digestion... 09:20 This is how we lubricate the system? 09:22 Yeah, exactly. Okay. 09:23 Have you ever had dry eyes? 09:25 You know, water is important for the eyes. 09:27 What else, the circulatory system, 09:29 we've talked about that. 09:30 Without water, you lose blood pressure. 09:33 Right. 09:34 It's important for the temperature regulation 09:36 of the body. 09:37 Our body is regulated at a very narrow range 09:40 and water helps regulate that. 09:42 Without water, we can't regulate that system 09:45 as well at all. 09:46 It helps our brain do better. 09:48 Up to 70% of some people's brain is water. 09:51 Without water, you don't think well, 09:53 it helps our skin. 09:55 With dry skin, the skin can't protect us 09:58 from all sorts of thing as well. 09:59 Right. It affects our muscle. 10:01 So basically, Nick, 10:03 water helps every cell in our body 10:05 and if we even short a little bit, 10:07 we get dehydrated. 10:09 So I tell people, you know, 10:10 just drink till your urine come out clear 10:12 or try to bring half of your body weight in ounces. 10:18 You weigh 100 pounds, 10:19 well you need at least 50 ounces of water a day. 10:23 A Dasani bottle 10:24 has about 20 ounces of water in it, 10:26 but the bottom line is make sure you're drinking water 10:28 and thinking about the importance of water 10:31 in every cell of the body as well. 10:33 Now when I noticed that I'm getting dehydrated, 10:36 it's usually 'cause my fingers 10:37 or my hands are getting really dry 10:39 or maybe my lips are getting chapped. 10:40 Yeah. 10:42 Is that some of those common indicators that you have? 10:43 Yeah. 10:44 And some other signs might be headache, 10:46 okay? 10:47 Your heart starts going to beat faster 10:50 'cause you're trying to compensate attack of cardio. 10:53 Chapped or dry skins, you might get dizzy 10:56 when you change positions, 10:58 especially if your blood pressure is low. 11:01 In extreme conditions, you might not, 11:03 you know, think as well. 11:05 Yeah. 11:06 You might not be going to the bathroom as much. 11:09 When you go to the bathroom, 11:10 it might be extremely concentrated, 11:12 extremely dark. 11:13 In Mark's case, he didn't have water 11:15 and his muscles were breaking down 11:17 and he had a condition called rhabdomyolysis, 11:20 that was extreme condition as well. 11:23 So there's a whole host of different things 11:25 that happened that's bad. 11:26 But for extreme dehydration, 11:27 it can be something as simple as 11:29 "I'm a little bit more tired than usual." 11:31 And it could be, 11:32 my heart's racing a little faster. 11:34 So all these are subtle symptoms 11:36 that you might be dehydrated. 11:37 In the hospital, we can measure the blood work, 11:40 we can measure the urine, 11:41 we can actually measure 11:42 the specific gravity of your urine 11:44 to see if yours concentrated or dilute. 11:46 You know, there's little things that we can do, 11:48 I can look at your tongue, 11:49 and if your tongue doesn't have any fluid on it, 11:51 I can say you're dehydrated. Sure. Yeah. 11:53 I can look at your eyes to see if they have fluid in them. 11:56 So there's lots of little subtle things we can do. 11:58 We can change a person's position 12:00 so if they get up real quick and they get dizzy 12:03 and their heart rate starts beating fast, 12:04 that might be a sign that the body is dehydrated 12:07 to a certain degree. 12:09 So there's lot of different signs 12:10 that we can do. 12:11 The big point is, I want everyone today to think, 12:13 "Am I drinking water every day? 12:16 And if I'm not, 12:17 how can I incorporate water into my life?" 12:20 Yeah, I was just gonna ask with your patients, 12:22 say you have someone who's a big coffee drinker 12:24 or they drink a lot of soda, cokes, and that kind of thing. 12:28 The marketing out there, 12:29 it does a very good job of convincing us 12:30 we need to drink these other things. 12:32 How do you get them to substitute 12:34 one drink a day for water? 12:35 Or how do you get them drink more water? 12:37 First of all, I educate them the importance of water. 12:40 I also tell them that, you know, 12:42 what these other beverages might be doing to the body. 12:44 You know, all the chemicals, all the sugars 12:47 that we're getting in these beverages. 12:48 If they're too caffeinated, they can dehydrate you, 12:51 so you don't have the water. 12:53 I say you do wanna get older quicker, 12:54 that's always a good one. 12:56 You know, do you wanna wear out quicker, 12:57 do you wanna get dementia quicker. 12:59 Sure. 13:00 You know, do you wanna have these problems. 13:01 And because of Mark's situation, 13:03 there's always a sort of a constant reminder of me 13:05 to stress this. 13:07 And lot of people don't understand 13:09 the importance of water in every cell in the body, 13:13 you know, I tell people with heart problems, 13:14 "You got to be careful with it, 13:16 but drink enough water helps the blood a lot, 13:18 it helps it not get too thick or too thin, 13:20 helps maintain your kidney function, 13:22 so I can give you medicines correctly." 13:24 It helps many different physiologic mechanisms. 13:27 And along with that, you know, if they're still not convinced, 13:30 I say, "Listen, you know, our Creator knew 13:34 that this earth was water, He created water for a reason, 13:37 He put water in every cell more than anything else 13:39 for a reason, you know, we have to respect that." 13:42 And as you get to know God, the living water, 13:45 it helps you remember 13:46 the importance of the physical water 13:48 and vice versa. 13:49 And then it becomes a habit. 13:51 People start drinking these yeti cups 13:53 with maybe a little bit of tea in it 13:54 where you can hydrate yourself. 13:56 They might find some other flavored water, 13:58 they might drink water plain, 13:59 which is probably the best way to hydrate yourself. 14:01 Yeah. 14:03 In fruits and vegetables, 14:04 you also get a large amount of water. 14:06 So they might increase their vegetable content 14:07 'cause most of vegetables and fruits 14:09 are made of water as well. 14:10 Right. Yeah. 14:11 You know, it's such an important thing for us to do, 14:13 drink the water but sometimes we just forget. 14:16 Yeah. 14:17 And that's why in the Biblical Prescriptions for Life, 14:18 we spend an entire week of talking about water, 14:22 little things that people can do 14:24 to remind themselves to drink water, 14:26 but also focusing on the living water, 14:29 the water that only Christ gives us 14:30 that also improves our health. 14:32 All right, on that note, we're gonna take a short break. 14:34 But stay with us, as when we return, 14:36 we're gonna talk more about Biblical Prescriptions, 14:38 how faith in living water plays a role in our physical health 14:41 as well as, and we're gonna answer a question 14:43 on hydrotherapy. 14:45 So stay right there. |
