00:01 Welcome back, and if you're just joining us
00:02 for today's program, we've been talking 00:04 about the benefits of hydration, 00:05 drinking water rather than some of the other things 00:07 that are out there. 00:09 And, Dr. Marcum, we've had a question come in 00:10 about hydrotherapy. 00:13 Viewers, if you have a question, 00:14 you can visit HeartWiseMinistries.org, 00:17 that's where people can submit health questions 00:19 and get some general guidance 00:21 about where to go to get proper answers. 00:24 But this person writes in and says, 00:25 "Is hydrotherapy still used as a treatment 00:28 for medical conditions?" 00:29 First of all, what is hydrotherapy? 00:31 Yeah. 00:32 Well, I'm not an expert in hydrotherapy, 00:34 but I can explain a little bit, the basics of what it is. 00:37 And that's what I like about interacting on television 00:40 as well as at the website is we could disseminate 00:43 information both directions. 00:45 So if you think about it, 00:47 we've talked so far about the importance of water 00:50 for every cell. 00:52 We've also talked about 00:53 how lack of water causes problems, 00:55 stress on the system, 00:57 creates aging, metabolic problems. 01:00 We heard a case of a drastic case 01:02 of dehydration. 01:04 And then we talked about, 01:05 there's little parts of dehydration 01:07 that occur to everyone 01:08 that doesn't bring enough water in. 01:11 So what is hydrotherapy? 01:13 Well, sometimes, throughout time, 01:15 water has been used to treat specific conditions, 01:20 okay, specific conditions. 01:21 Okay. So let's talk about that. 01:23 We've talked a little bit about how water changes are... 01:27 thermostat, but we know that water compresses, 01:31 you know, hot water that dilates blood vessels. 01:35 You know, cold water can constrict blood vessels. 01:39 So just dilating blood vessels and constricting them 01:41 can help in the blood flow to the body. 01:44 And the better blood flow to the body, 01:46 the better oxygen, the better our body can help 01:48 heal itself and recover. 01:50 So some people use that for helping the circulation. 01:53 So the idea is that hot water compress on your arm 01:57 or wherever may help increase circulation, 01:59 which then might help that area feel better in the general? 02:02 That's a general feel for it. 02:04 Another thing is, it's used for is to cleanse, 02:07 to cleanse wounds, you know, especially in burn patients. 02:11 You know, hydrotherapy to keep the woods clean, 02:14 to keep some of the contaminants off. 02:16 We use water every day, 02:18 hydrotherapy, when we wash our hands. 02:20 You know, we wash the germs off our hands. 02:22 Well, water can help cleanse other parts of the body. 02:25 Some people use it as bowel to help cleanse the bowel. 02:29 You know, they take extra water in there 02:31 to help move things through. 02:32 And there're specific regimens, I'm not familiar with, 02:36 that they use to help cleanse the bowel. 02:38 In fact, hydrotherapy has been around 02:40 for a long periods of time. 02:42 It's been used for pain for quite a long time too. 02:46 Have you ever had... 02:47 You know, I know you bicycle a lot, 02:49 have you ever had a sore joint? 02:51 Sure, okay. What will you would put it? 02:53 You're putting it in warm water 02:55 can help some of the inflammation, 02:56 helps the blood flow, 02:58 helps relax the muscles around it, 03:00 can be improved to help the relaxing process. 03:03 So there's certain regimens of hot and cold, 03:06 and water treatments that can be used for majority 03:09 of many different types of situations. 03:12 I tell people that are suffering 03:13 from headaches that, 03:15 it maybe that's because they're dehydrated, 03:16 maybe just drinking a little more 03:17 water would help with that. 03:19 Yeah. 03:20 So hydrotherapy is a very valuable, 03:22 not only used to treat many different 03:24 medical conditions but it also, staying hydrated 03:27 can help prevent needing the hydrotherapy. 03:31 Does that make sense? Yeah. 03:32 So I've even seen it use in infections, 03:35 you know, people that have chronic viruses or infections, 03:38 they use it to improve their circulation, 03:40 help the blood move better, help the body heal itself. 03:43 So it can be used in many different situations. 03:46 And poultices, they put water poultices on things 03:49 that help the skin and that stay hydrated. 03:52 So there's many places that people are still using 03:55 hydrotherapy as a way to treat many medical condition 03:58 and it's very, very useful. 04:00 So if someone's interested in this type of treatment, 04:03 I would suggest going to, 04:06 you know, some reliable sources. 04:07 There's many different places that still do hydrotherapy. 04:10 Do the research on them and see which ones, 04:13 talk to some people that have had some good results, 04:15 and this might be a treatment that might benefit you. 04:17 Yeah, it seems like a pretty low risk attempt... 04:20 Yeah. To find some benefits. 04:22 You know, and I use hydrotherapy 04:23 to some degree every day, whether on my own body, 04:26 whether it be washing my hands or in the shower, 04:29 you know, that warm heat 04:30 that comes on that sort of relaxes my muscle, 04:33 makes me feel better. 04:34 You know, when I drink water in the morning, 04:36 maybe help get the digestion system 04:38 a little bit more functional, doing better. 04:41 You know, I see a lot of people that use it 04:42 to help keep the body parts 04:44 that might be contaminated cleaner. 04:46 There's lots of different ways that... 04:48 And I think people should look into that 04:49 as an integrative part of healing. 04:52 Yeah, you know I haven't thought of it as hydrotherapy, 04:55 but I've noticed when we go to visit family 04:57 who happen to live at high altitude, 04:58 they live in about 10,000 feet. 05:00 Sometimes getting acclimated can be a difficult process, 05:03 and I get bad headaches. 05:04 But I've discovered, if I drink about twice 05:06 the amount of water that I normally drink, 05:08 it helps acclimate me faster 05:10 and reduce the potential for getting those headaches. 05:11 Yeah. 05:13 And there's lots of skin conditions 05:14 and benefit from hydrotherapy. 05:16 So I think that's a great question. 05:18 I just wish I knew more about it 05:20 but I don't practice it. 05:21 But I know that people that's received hydrotherapy 05:24 have had great benefits. 05:26 It's been around for a long time. 05:29 So there must be some benefit to it. 05:31 And I've never heard of anyone really getting hurt 05:34 by trying this type of therapy. 05:35 Especially, it's useful for chronic pains, 05:38 and it can be used for different types 05:39 of infections, 05:40 to cleanse different types of wound situations. 05:43 And also people add different things to the water. 05:46 You know, the Egyptians used to put different salts 05:48 and different things in the water 05:50 to aid the water's help in the healing process. 05:53 So there's all sorts of ways that people are doing this. 05:56 When a person comes in the emergency room, 05:58 one of the first things we do is make sure they're hydrated. 06:00 We hook them up to some water, you know, some normal sailing, 06:04 get them hydrated, get their body parts 06:07 able to heal itself better. 06:09 You know, when you're dirty at the end of the day 06:11 and you might have germs on you, 06:12 you're taking that shower. 06:14 Well, the same type of principles 06:16 in regulating the heat, helping wipe off germs, 06:19 treating inflammation, 06:20 improving the body's own ability to heal itself 06:24 can be enhanced by hydrotherapy. 06:27 Yeah. 06:29 And let's change the discussion a little bit. 06:30 Let's talk about it from a biblical perspective. 06:32 Think for a second. 06:33 What are the top three, two or three examples 06:35 you can think of from the Bible, 06:37 where it talks about water? 06:39 You know, there's so many. 06:42 You know, I think back into Genesis, 06:44 you know, and Moses, 06:45 you know, the people 06:47 that they needed water to survive. 06:49 You know, and God supplied them water, okay? 06:52 I also think about, you know, some of the way 06:54 God used water to hurt, 06:56 you know, the Egyptians and water, 06:58 the water fell on them, to save His people, you know. 07:01 So water has been used throughout times. 07:03 And you see examples of God creating water. 07:06 Droughts, you know, the people without water. 07:09 And you know, in Elijah's time, 07:12 you know, they had this drought, 07:13 everyone's panicking. 07:15 They're losing their crops because water is so important, 07:17 not only for our bodies, but to grow food for us, 07:20 to hydrate ourself. 07:21 You know, we can't live very long at all 07:23 without water, Nick. 07:24 You know, we can live more without food 07:26 than without water. 07:27 So water is so important. 07:29 We see this throughout Bible, the importance of water 07:31 in a life and how God teaches us 07:34 that physical water is very important. 07:36 But also with that, we hear about living water. 07:40 Yeah, I was just gonna say about the women at the well. 07:41 When Jesus met the woman at the well, 07:43 He was offering living water. 07:45 What's the implication for our health? 07:48 How does the living water and our physical health, 07:51 how do those two go together? 07:52 Well, we are now learning through science, 07:55 as people come into states of worship, 07:58 their physiology changes, okay. 08:01 Andrew Newburg 08:03 at the University of Pennsylvania 08:04 has studied worship, 08:06 just short periods of time with people, 08:07 and show the part of the brain 08:09 called anterior cingulate cortex gets larger. 08:12 There's others that have done minor studies 08:14 that show when we do these repetitive prayers, 08:16 the brain gets bigger, it improves. 08:20 We have physiological changes, 08:21 it turns down chronic stressors, 08:23 okay, which age us. 08:25 So I'm working on a worship study 08:27 of 10 minutes of worship 08:28 and seeing how that changes our physiology, 08:31 how it changes our very genes that we're under. 08:34 And I'm pretty confident 08:36 that when we come into biblical worship, 08:38 we're going to see improvements of our physiology. 08:41 So God not only helps us 08:44 to understand the physical world, 08:46 but the spiritual and the physical walk together. 08:49 And I like to think, 08:50 when I'm drinking a glass of water, 08:52 I also want to think about the importance 08:54 of the healing water, the water that... 08:57 The woman at the well, she had both the physical 08:59 and the spiritual all at once. 09:01 And they saw how the connection 09:03 between that. 09:04 Well, we see that over and over throughout the Bible 09:06 about the physical and spiritual water. 09:08 And this is the real healing that occurs on permanently. 09:12 You know, in the New Testament, depending on who you read, 09:15 there's 23 to 24 healings that occur. 09:19 And all of those people that were healed 09:20 eventually died. 09:22 Right. 09:23 Even people raised from the dead died. 09:25 And several times, Christ walked by people 09:27 that needed healing 09:29 but He really wanted to present the gospel. 09:32 And in the gospel, when you accept the gospel, 09:35 there you have the healing, the permanent healing. 09:38 That's the living water. 09:39 When you have Christ in your life, 09:41 that's the biggest miracle at all, 09:43 that's the healing water that can happen right now, 09:46 right today. 09:47 And when we have that, we see these other truths 09:50 that help us understand, whether we need to drink 09:52 more physical water 09:53 or be out in the light or move more. 09:55 And that's what Biblical Prescriptions 09:57 is all about, 09:58 letting people know that the physical and spiritual, 10:00 they work together. 10:02 And God gives us the power to do things 10:04 for the right reasons, including drinking water. 10:06 We want to drink water so we can honor 10:08 and glorify Him. 10:09 You know, we want to stay with the living water 10:12 because that will give us a future hope for today 10:14 and hope also for a long past 10:16 when our physical bodies might wear out. 10:18 Yeah. 10:20 You know, we're just about out of time on today's program, 10:21 but I want to make sure that we mentioned 10:23 our free offer today, 10:24 our free guide to Healing Hydration. 10:27 It's more than just physical water. 10:28 It's talking about both drinking water 10:30 as well as being involved in a healing relationship 10:34 with our Creator who gives us living water. 10:37 And you can find that free resource 10:39 at medical conditions. 11:19 And more importantly, the living water 11:21 that each one of us has 11:23 as we walk with Christ each day, 11:25 that helps us see different types 11:27 of health things that we can do, 11:28 and helps us with our medical problems, 11:30 and also helps us with healing eternally. 11:34 There might be those out there that need special prayer today, 11:37 and I wanna
