00:01 The following program presents principles
00:02 designed to promote good health and is not intended to take 00:05 the place of personalized professional care. 00:07 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:09 are those of the speaker. 00:10 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:13 about the information presented. 00:15 An ancient Greek physician from the Age of Pericles 00:18 once spoke the words, 00:19 "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." 00:24 This, of course, was spoken by the father of medicine, 00:26 Hippocrates. 00:27 But you might not have heard another of his quotes 00:29 in which he said, "Wherever the art of medicine is loved, 00:33 there is also a love of humanity." 00:36 And that's exactly our goal on today's program as we share 00:39 about the importance of optimal nutrition 00:41 in fighting some of the most common chronic conditions 00:44 attacking our world today. 01:06 Thanks for joining us here today 01:07 for the Ultimate Prescription, 01:09 a program dedicated to helping us 01:11 better understand God's design for our lives 01:13 and experience better health by following His plan. 01:16 I'm your host Nick Evenson here with Dr. James Marcum 01:19 for an excellent program today in which we'll be discussing 01:22 optimal nutrition for fighting chronic disease. 01:25 Dr. Marcum, welcome to the program. 01:27 Thanks, Nick. It's nice being here. 01:29 And we've got some big words we've thrown out there, 01:31 chronic disease, nutrition, 01:34 and even the name of the program, 01:36 Ultimate Prescription. 01:37 You know, ultimate means what's the best, 01:40 the highest you can get, 01:42 what's the highest prescription you can get in life. 01:46 And that's what we try to do here. 01:47 We try to show the balance, 01:49 you know, the place for lifestyle changes, 01:51 especially in treating chronic disease 01:53 and one of the lifestyle changes 01:55 is improving nutrition. 01:57 We try to point out the place of modern medicine 01:59 especially helping with acute symptoms, 02:03 so we can get at the chronic symptoms 02:05 to slow down some of this aging process. 02:08 But the ultimate prescription is neither one of those. 02:11 It's not eating right, it's not exercising, 02:13 it's not moving, no one has its place. 02:16 It's not doing bypass surgery, 02:18 and stents, and pacemakers, and knee replacements, 02:21 and all that modern medicine does, 02:22 though it has its place, 02:25 the ultimate prescription is when each one of us, 02:28 you know, can come into a relationship with Jesus. 02:31 He presents us as clean in front of God 02:34 when we worship and we're made perfect, 02:36 that's the healing we want to point people to, 02:39 that's the path of ultimate prescription 02:41 that we all want to be on. 02:42 Yeah. 02:44 So that's very exciting to me to have the ability to talk 02:47 and incorporate this into healing. 02:49 And I love that quote you used, where did you get that from? 02:52 Wikipedia. 02:53 Wikipedia, okay. 02:55 You can Google and find great things on the internet 02:56 provided that you find the true things. 02:58 So you weren't like reading a fable book 03:00 or something like that? 03:02 I was Google searching, yeah. 03:03 On Google sort of approach. 03:04 You know, Hippocrates, 03:06 when I graduated from medical school 03:08 at the University of Texas, 03:10 you know, he had a quote, "First, do no harm." 03:13 And that we all had to hear that quote. 03:15 So Hippocrates goes way back 03:17 and some consider him the father of medicine. 03:20 And the fact that he made that statement 03:22 so many years ago, 03:24 it's interesting how history in medicine repeats itself, 03:28 you know, years ago 03:29 some of the ways they treated high blood pressure 03:31 is very similar 03:33 to what we're coming around before. 03:34 So we come to the cycles, 03:36 you know, and it's very interesting, 03:39 you know, at the time of George Washington, 03:40 for instance, 03:42 you know, they treated him with bloodletting, 03:44 you know, they took out his blood. 03:45 And if you want that, 03:47 you weren't in the club, you know. 03:49 For years, dentists treated dental pain with cocaine, 03:52 you know, now it's not used for that anymore, 03:54 but something else. 03:56 Yeah. 03:57 And we think as late as the 30s, 03:59 they were using cigarettes as a treatment for asthma, 04:03 you know, go figure, you know. 04:05 And it's interesting how I think 04:07 as we look back on to the way medicine has evolved, and say, 04:10 "Wow, modern medicine did some great things, 04:13 but it really did some things that we didn't want to do," 04:16 you know, it didn't really get at some of the causes 04:18 that we're looking at. 04:20 And that's why I'm glad 04:21 we're talking about one of the chronic diseases, 04:23 diabetes, and how nutrition can be used to treat that. 04:27 That's right. 04:29 You know, before we get to the diabetes discussion, 04:30 you know, there's not too many physicians 04:32 that I've heard with this perspective 04:34 that you have about 04:35 the ultimate prescription being more of a relationship 04:37 than a procedure and medication. 04:39 Where can folks go to find out more 04:41 about this idea of biblical prescriptions 04:44 and following God's design for our lives? 04:45 Yeah, the website we have HeartWiseMinistries.org. 04:49 It has a lot of resources, a lot of books, 04:52 and books I've written on it including, 04:55 you know, The Ultimate Prescription. 04:56 Book by the same title? Yeah, book... 04:58 With this Bible study Biblical Prescriptions for Life, 05:01 and the best place they can go at all 05:04 is this book right here, 05:06 where they can actually read what God says, and pray to God, 05:10 and ask Him to lead in a life, and worship Him. 05:13 And we're developing for those 05:15 that aren't familiar with how to worship, 05:17 we're actually developing worship studies 05:20 where people can for 10 minutes a day 05:22 begin worship. 05:23 And we have things called worship warm-up, where it's, 05:25 you know, it's getting our body ready to worship, 05:27 so our worship could be optimized when we put... 05:30 Remember, it's not necessarily how long we worship, 05:33 but how well we worship. 05:35 And when we worship the true God, 05:36 there's physical 05:38 and chemical changes in our body 05:40 that helps our entire physiology 05:41 that gives us the power 05:43 to do some of these things we've been talking about 05:46 in Biblical Prescriptions for Life. 05:48 Yeah, we don't want to just go through the moment of emotions, 05:50 we want to have quality experiences, 05:52 worshiping and then learning about God. 05:54 Yeah, very exciting stuff. 05:55 Well, we are going to take a question 05:56 from the website here. 05:58 Someone writes in and ask a question 05:59 relating to diabetes. 06:01 I've been recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, 06:03 and I've heard that this may be reversible. 06:05 Is this true? And if so, how? 06:07 Yeah, type 2 diabetes is reversible 06:11 in many situations, 06:12 you know, some genetic cases, maybe not, 06:15 but many cases it is. 06:17 And I've had the privilege of working 06:19 with some of the best nutritionist 06:21 in the world today. 06:22 One of them is T. Colin Campbell. 06:24 And he has an organization called PlantPure Nation. 06:27 And I recently was able to answer 06:30 a similar question on his website, 06:33 so I think we should just watch that clip 06:35 that might give this answer in a nutshell. 06:38 All right, let's take a look. 06:40 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 06:41 I just wanted to spend a few minutes today 06:44 talking to you about type 2 diabetes. 06:47 A lot of people don't realize 06:48 that in the United States since 1990, about 29 million, 06:53 that's 29 million people have been diagnosed 06:57 or undiagnosed with type 2 diabetes. 07:00 And it's estimated 07:01 by the Centers for Disease Control 07:04 that by mid century, 07:05 one in three will have type 2 diabetes. 07:08 Why is this such a major problem? 07:11 'Cause type 2 diabetes leads to many other complications, 07:15 heart attacks, strokes, 07:17 damage the blood vessels in all the body 07:19 which could cause kidney disease, 07:21 neuropathies, bad joint circulation, 07:25 and the list goes on and on. 07:27 Our current treatment really focuses 07:29 on treating the blood sugar 07:31 doesn't really get it to the cause. 07:32 And there's been lots of medicines out there. 07:35 And when you talk to people, they say, 07:36 "Well, let's start this medicine." 07:38 They don't really focus on the cause of disease. 07:42 I want to tell you about the cause of disease 07:45 and put this thought in your mind, 07:46 so if you know someone 07:48 that's diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 07:50 or you have it yourself, 07:51 getting at the cause is always better 07:54 than just treating symptoms, 07:56 especially when we have a devastating disease 07:58 that could cause you to have a heart attack, 08:00 or stroke, or some other organ in the body that goes poorly 08:04 just because it doesn't have a good blood supply. 08:07 The majority of type 2 diabetes is caused by our lifestyle. 08:12 And that lifestyle consist 08:14 of eating the wrong types of food 08:16 and not exercising enough. 08:18 What are the wrong types of food? 08:21 Well, a diet that's high in animal protein, animal fat, 08:25 and processed foods. 08:27 This through a bunch of complex mechanisms 08:30 make blood sugar increase, 08:32 damaging our entire body, including our blood vessels. 08:36 It only makes sense 08:38 if we want to solve this major health problem 08:39 that we have to go 08:41 to a whole food plant-based diet. 08:43 We have to get animal protein, animal fat, 08:47 processed foods out of our diet. 08:49 Many studies have shown that if you go 08:51 to a whole food plant-based diet, 08:52 you can reverse type 2 diabetes in a short period of time. 08:56 Are there other contributors to type 2 diabetes? 08:59 Absolutely, sometimes you can have your pancreas destroyed 09:02 by toxins and it doesn't make insulin, 09:04 a whole food plant-based diet 09:06 helps address that problem as well. 09:09 So I want to encourage you, 09:10 if you know someone that has type 2 diabetes 09:12 or if you might have it, 09:13 get at the cause of disease 09:15 and just don't treat the symptoms. 09:17 Move away from a diet that's high in protein, 09:19 high in fat, and high in processed foods, 09:22 and go to a whole food plant-based diet today. 09:27 That's some great advice there. 09:28 Just to summarize, it's caused by lifestyle. 09:30 Type 2 diabetes is caused by lifestyle, 09:32 primarily lack of exercise, 09:33 and too many processed foods, right? 09:36 And then it's reversible 09:37 through a whole food plant-based diet. 09:39 Is that about right? 09:40 Yeah, that's about right. 09:42 And in looking at the research, 09:44 we know that when a person brings 09:45 too much fat in the body, it's stored. 09:49 And all of this extra animal fat and animal protein, 09:52 we really weren't designed to handle, 09:54 it puts stress on the body. 09:56 Specifically when these fat receptors get clogged up, 10:00 you know, these fat, you know, in our body gets clogged up... 10:03 I didn't mean fat receptors, 10:05 I mean insulin receptors get clogged up by fat, 10:08 the blood sugar can't get into the cells. 10:11 So your pancreas makes more insulin, 10:13 which, so the pancreas starts running out of insulin, 10:16 the sugar can't get into the cells, 10:18 so all sorts of other metabolic processes occur. 10:22 It starts breaking down other energy sources 10:25 because the blood sugar's so high, 10:27 you start going to the bathroom a lot, 10:29 you urinate a lot, you get tired a lot, 10:31 the blood vessels become damaged, 10:33 you have lots of medical problems 10:35 that can progress over time. 10:37 This is why type 2 diabetes is so devastating, 10:40 and it's estimated that one in three by mid century 10:42 in the United States will have this condition. 10:44 So it sounds like 10:46 we're talking basically about a little traffic jam going on 10:48 your insulin receptors. 10:49 The fat's blocking it, so the insulin can't get in 10:52 creating more insulin. 10:54 What's the situation here? 10:55 Whole food plant-based diet 10:57 can reverse it most of the time, 10:58 but I don't think we hear that often enough. 11:00 What is modern medicine doing to treat this? 11:01 Yeah, well, a lot of, you know, we're just now finding out 11:05 about a lot of this good nutritional therapy 11:07 that's out there. 11:09 And now that is getting out there, we're realizing that, 11:11 you know, you go to the doctor, 11:13 and he's going to hear about this, 11:14 and, you know, one of the things 11:16 I'm very curious is that pancreas still making insulin, 11:18 okay? 11:19 If the pancreas is making insulin, that's great, okay. 11:23 Then that means you have a chance 11:24 to reverse this. 11:26 So you want to get improve the situation, 11:28 and by getting fat off the body, by exercising, 11:31 studies have shown that you can reverse this. 11:33 There's a couple of good websites 11:35 if you might be interested in reversal, the details of it. 11:38 One of them is pcrm.org, 11:42 that's Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.org. 11:46 And also the plantpurenation.com website 11:49 has some very good information 11:51 about giving you the nuts and bolts 11:53 if you're interested in doing this, 11:55 of course, under your doctor's supervision 11:57 'cause not everyone should be doing this 11:59 in different types of ways. 12:00 But it is possible to reverse this condition. 12:04 Is it easy? No. 12:06 'Cause, you know, everyone, 12:07 you know, people, unfortunately they go to the doctor 12:09 and the blood sugar's high, 12:10 and it takes time 12:12 to educate people on nutrition and exercise. 12:15 And unfortunately many people don't want to do it. 12:18 They go, "It's too hard, I can't do it." 12:20 But you know what? 12:22 I've learned, if you'll start one step at a time, 12:25 and move slow, and say, 12:26 "Listen, it doesn't have to be done in a day." 12:28 Now some people want to do it all at once 12:30 'cause they want to feel better right away 12:31 'cause they have so many symptoms. 12:33 But a lot of times, type 2 diabetes, 12:35 they don't feel too bad at first 12:37 until they show up with a heart attack, 12:39 renal failure, neuropathy or something major. 12:42 So that's why this is a hidden process 12:44 that's going on in our bodies. 12:45 It's sort of a silent assassin for many years 12:48 until all of a sudden an organ's damaged permanently. 12:51 And that's what we want to prevent 12:53 and we know worldwide 12:54 as we've begun eating the westernized diet, 12:57 all this processed foods, all this animal fat, 13:01 animal protein, we've created a problem in our own bodies. 13:04 And I want to, you know, I got a great example 13:07 little bit later that I want to talk about, 13:09 about ways that we... 13:10 One person that I know, 13:12 a patient that I had actually reversed this. 13:13 All right. 13:15 Well, stay tuned, 13:16 we're going to be back after a short break 13:18 where Dr. Marcum is going to talk to us 13:19 about a case study of a patient 13:20 who actually reversed type 2 diabetes 13:22 just using a whole food plant-based diet. |
