00:01 Welcome back.
00:02 And if you're just joining us on today's program, 00:04 we're discussing the physiology of worship 00:05 and how we actually experience 00:07 physical benefits, right, Dr. Marcum? 00:08 Yeah. 00:09 And it's very complex subject, 00:11 but we wanted to introduce it to people as realizing 00:13 that there's real physiology behind the worship. 00:17 And in our Bible study, 00:18 the way we designed it is we designed it 00:21 first understanding why we're sick, you know, 00:23 understanding our DNA and the stressors, 00:25 and what causes disease, 00:27 then we went through some of the most common things 00:30 that people are not doing well anymore 00:32 and how it causes stress that's causing this bad thing. 00:36 And as we move through the series, 00:37 people realize that their physical 00:39 and spiritual lives come together 00:42 and the worship gives them the power 00:43 to do things and to understand things. 00:46 And finally, we come to the end of the Bible study, 00:48 and we dwell on the importance of worship. 00:51 And the goal is not only to improve your worship 00:54 but give everyone a tool 00:56 where they can go out to their friends 00:58 and neighbors and help them out 01:00 'cause if we think about the model 01:02 that Christ gave us, you know, He met people's needs, 01:06 He met people's needs. 01:08 He introduced them 01:09 into a relationship with the Father, 01:12 which included worship, 01:14 and the Holy Spirit gave the power to change, 01:17 and they saw the big the big picture, 01:20 which was to love one another, 01:22 to spread the everlasting gospel 01:25 so we could come back in union with our Father 01:29 the way we were designed to be. 01:31 The whole plan was moving forward. 01:34 And as our brain understands the reason for worship, 01:37 there's real physiology behind it. 01:40 But you ask yourself, "Well, why is this important?" 01:42 Yeah, what's the significance? Yeah, what's the significance? 01:45 Well, others... science evidence... 01:48 Everyone wants evidence. 01:50 You know, if I can publish an article that says, 01:52 you know, we've had 20 people that worshipped 01:54 and it does this to the genes, 01:56 and it helps lower the chance of aging, 01:58 helps diabetes, hypertension, stroke, 02:00 not to mention eternity. 02:03 Can you imagine the power of that 02:04 for people to understand... 02:06 "Well, I want to know a little bit 02:07 about the everlasting gospel? 02:09 I want to know about the good news. 02:12 I want to know what it is to accept a Savior." 02:15 Can you imagine the power of that to spread the gospel? 02:18 So there's been preliminary research that's done. 02:21 You know, we talked about Dr. Newberg 02:24 at the University of Pennsylvania. 02:25 Right. 02:26 Francis Collins has sequenced the DNA, 02:28 and that's another... 02:30 The language of God is another resource 02:32 that people might want 02:33 if they want to learn more about these things. 02:34 That's book that he wrote recently? 02:36 Yeah, not that I agree with everything about it, 02:38 but it helps people understand some of the science behind it. 02:42 So we as a ministry at Heartwise 02:43 wanted to give people a tool, something that they could do, 02:47 you know, a tool that they could work with, 02:49 a Bible study, 02:50 some biblical worship that they could do 02:52 as an intervention to improve their physiology, 02:56 like a pill, like a therapy 02:58 to help everything start to work together. 03:00 So the significance of this is this is a way 03:03 that we can personally 03:05 have the gospel strengthen in our lives 03:07 to feed our brain, to grow our brain, 03:10 to help slow down some of this aging, 03:12 to bring us back to the way we were designed. 03:15 This is also a way that we can reach 03:17 our friends and neighbors 03:19 with a new approach to the everlasting gospel 03:22 and help them understand 03:23 from an evidence-based science perspective 03:25 that what God says is true. 03:27 And as time goes on, if it does go on for us, 03:31 we're going to have more and more ways 03:33 we can prove that God's Word is true, 03:36 the science behind it. 03:37 Now I'm not saying 03:38 that we can understand God or His ways, 03:40 it's impossible, okay? 03:42 But diurnal trends and the way God works in a life, 03:45 that is possible. 03:47 Sure, yeah. 03:48 Let's shift the discussion just a little bit here. 03:51 Lots of folks these days are in natural remedies, right? 03:53 Right. It's a big thing. 03:55 Could you talk to us a little bit 03:56 about natural remedies and our biblical prescriptions? 03:59 Would you quantify those as natural remedies? 04:01 Yes, well, what could be... 04:03 That's a good point. 04:05 What could be more natural 04:07 than going back to the Word of God 04:09 to find answers? 04:11 What could be more natural 04:12 than worshiping God the way we were created to? 04:15 What could be more natural 04:17 than drinking water or living the design we were... 04:20 Unfortunately, some people equate natural remedies 04:24 with pills, and if you have a deficiency, 04:26 a pill might be useful, 04:28 if it's used to treat a condition 04:30 that might be useful. 04:31 But what I consider a natural remedy 04:34 is coming back to God's Word, 04:36 using His power in our lives to help us make changes, 04:39 and that might include a supplement at times, 04:43 it might... 04:45 Modern medicine at time, a nutritional intervention, 04:47 it might include hydrotherapy, it might include light therapy. 04:51 There's many modalities, 04:52 but I don't want us to lose focus 04:54 on the big picture. 04:56 Right. 04:57 The big picture is it's not what we do. 04:59 It's what God can do 05:01 when we're in relationship with Him. 05:03 That is the big picture. 05:05 And some of these other things, we... 05:06 Sometimes we get lost. 05:07 We get so wrapped up in everything else 05:10 that we lose sometimes focus on the big picture. 05:14 I want to tell a story. Do I have time to tell a story? 05:15 Yeah, yeah, you bet. Okay, okay. 05:17 I know that you have two sons. 05:19 Yeah, we've got two awesome little boys. 05:21 Yeah, and they're growing up now. 05:24 You know, I had the privilege of being around 05:26 when the first one was born, okay? 05:28 And I have watched his development. 05:32 You know, I'd seen him as you told me the stories 05:34 about how he started eating, you know, 05:36 you remember those days when he started eating? 05:39 And then when he became potty-trained. 05:40 Yeah, those were good days. That's big deal. 05:42 Yeah, and, you know, Hayden was your first one. 05:45 That's right. Corbin's the second one. 05:46 And where's Corbin at in his development now? 05:48 Oh, he's doing great. 05:50 He's walking, 05:51 not potty-trained yet, but he's eating, 05:52 he can feed himself very well, he's turned two just recently, 05:55 and so he's doing really well. 05:57 Yeah, I have two kids of my own, 05:58 Kelly and Jake. 06:00 They've gone through these years. 06:01 And as you've gone through these years, 06:03 do you think your kids have lots of this stress 06:06 of the world on them? 06:07 No. No. 06:09 So when they cry out and help, 06:10 it's usually for a basic physical need, right? 06:13 Or a toy. Or a toy. 06:15 They cry out, you know, and that's how they communicate 06:18 by crying and getting your attention. 06:19 They want to get your attention because they have a need, okay, 06:23 whether that be a need of love or go to the bathroom or eat, 06:26 they cry out because they have a need, okay? 06:29 And as they've grown, I've watched, you know... 06:31 Do you think... 06:33 I remember, you know, 06:34 when they took their first steps, 06:35 you sent me the video, okay? 06:37 But one of the things that strike me 06:39 is all along the way, 06:41 they've had someone's hand to hold on to, 06:44 and that's been your hand. 06:45 They've always had someone to help them up 06:47 and help them in their development, okay? 06:50 Well, likewise, 06:52 when we're developing in our lives, 06:54 as we move through life, 06:56 we always have someone 06:58 to hold our hands as we develop. 07:00 We always have someone's hand to hold on to that will help us 07:03 to stay upright. 07:05 And that's what happens when we worship, 07:08 that's like we have always someone 07:10 to hold hand to that will help us, 07:12 get through the development milestones of life of living, 07:15 to help us see the big purpose of why we're here. 07:18 We always have a hand, 07:20 and that's what I want people to focus on 07:21 in their looking at their health 07:23 is have that hand that you can hold on to 07:26 that will help you when you have these trials, 07:28 that we're always going to get to 07:30 because we have an imperfect body. 07:34 And we always have that hand 07:35 to hold on to as we go through life, 07:38 and that's what this worship gives you. 07:40 So even if we fall down, 07:42 we have a hand we can hold on that will help us up. 07:44 Even if we have a health crisis, 07:46 we have a hand that will help us hold us up. 07:48 Even if we can't understand, 07:50 well, what should we do with a natural remedy 07:53 or a food or a doctor is recommending this, 07:55 we always have a hand to hold on to 07:57 that will help us and explain us 07:59 though these milestones in life. 08:00 Right. 08:01 Understanding that there's no perfect formula 08:05 that man can give us, 08:07 you know, there's always imperfections, 08:09 and, you know, I have a lot of people 08:11 that give me black and white questions, 08:13 you know, "Well, what should I do?" 08:15 Well, sometimes there's no perfect plan 08:17 other than asking God's leadership 08:19 'cause it might be, 08:20 you need a little bit of this, you need a little bit of that, 08:23 but it's very much individualized. 08:25 We are individuals, 08:27 and individuals are complicated, 08:29 complicated from the top and the bottom. 08:31 And sometimes there's just not a magical treatment 08:34 that will treat everything, you know? 08:36 Well, I got a question not too long ago about a person 08:39 with an advanced neuropathy, okay? 08:42 The nerves weren't working. 08:44 Well, they wanted in a few sentences 08:45 to understand, "What can I do to fix this problem?" 08:50 Well... 08:52 Probably pretty complicated. Well, yeah. 08:53 I mean, and you think about the nerves 08:56 and all the things that can damage the nerves, 08:58 whether it be a nutritional deficiency 08:59 or circulation deficiency, 09:01 maybe a toxin damaged the nerves. 09:04 But no matter what was damaging the nerves, 09:06 I would want them to understand 09:08 that worship is a treatment 09:10 for every condition, Every condition 09:13 'cause that not only gives us hope for today 09:16 but hope forever, 09:17 and that brings us back into the big picture 09:19 that gives us focusing on the way 09:21 we were designed to be. 09:22 So even if all the nerves malfunction in the body, 09:25 we are still in a safe place. 09:28 And when I talk about the Ultimate Prescription, 09:31 you know, we're always in a safe place 09:33 when we invite God to lead our lives every day. 09:36 That's a safe place to be. 09:37 Yeah, you know, this is something 09:38 that we're encouraging folks to adopt into their own lives, 09:41 but it's also something we want them to take and share 09:44 to other people. 09:45 I wonder, in the office, 09:46 I'm sure you get people who don't, 09:48 you know, maybe they're not believers, 09:49 maybe they don't give much credibility to the Bible, 09:51 how do you begin that conversation with them? 09:53 Well, have you considered biblical prescriptions? 09:55 How do you navigate that? 09:57 Yeah, well, you know, 09:58 I give them biblical prescription. 10:00 I believe we have an example of a biblical prescription 10:02 that we give that they can share. 10:04 And let's look at that right now. 10:06 All right. 10:07 I'm Dr. James Marcum 10:08 with your Biblical Prescription for Life. 10:11 Martha came to the office a few weeks ago 10:13 complaining of not remembering as well. 10:16 Well, many of us also have this problem. 10:18 I suggested a biblical treatment for life 10:21 found in Daniel chapter 1. 10:23 This is the story about Daniel 10:25 and his friends in a foreign land. 10:26 They asked for pulses and water, 10:28 things that grew and water to drink. 10:31 And after a short period of time in Daniel 1, 10:34 these young gentlemen were 10 times smarter 10:37 than all the other people that ate the king's food. 10:40 Well, just think, 10:41 your nutrition helps improve the brain. 10:43 There's numerous studies out there that show foods, 10:46 especially blueberries, walnuts, and almonds 10:49 improve a person's cognition. 10:51 When Martha started eating healthier, 10:53 especially blueberries and other berries, 10:55 she began to improve her cognition. 10:57 I'm Dr. James Marcum 10:59 with your Biblical Prescription for Life. 11:05 You know, I guess, Dr. Marcum, 11:06 you don't necessarily have to be a believer 11:08 to try these things and reap the benefits 11:10 and then that might convince people 11:11 that there's something to this biblical prescription. 11:13 Right, and there's lots of biblical prescriptions 11:16 that when we talked about nutrition 11:19 enhancing your brain function, 11:21 nutrition enhancing your ability to worship 11:23 like we've talked about today, 11:25 but I'm talking about worship as a standalone treatment. 11:28 Yeah. 11:29 And we're getting more science, 11:31 but I think that we should just give it a try, 11:35 give it a try for worship, do it regularly, and see... 11:38 Let God change create in you a new heart and new brain. 11:41 Let's just try it and see what happens, you know? 11:44 What do you really have to lose? 11:46 And I want to mention a free offer that we have. 11:48 Our guide to optimal worship, 11:52 BiblicalPrescriptions.com /Worship is the website. 11:55 You can download our one page guide, 11:56 it's very simple to use, 11:58 there's great resources on there 11:59 to help you worship more regularly 12:02 and find more fulfillment through worship. 12:04 So thank you for joining us today 12:05 on the Ultimate Prescription. 12:07 And Dr. Marcum is going to join us 12:08 and finish with prayer in a moment. 12:18 We've been discussing today worship. 12:21 And now science has proven 12:24 the physiologic benefits of worship, 12:26 how this is changing your body, your brain, your life, 12:30 how it affects aging, how it affects chronic disease. 12:35 And I want to ask you today to give worship a try. 12:39 And if you're already worshiping, fantastic, 12:42 share this with other people. 12:43 There's many resources and ways to worship. 12:47 But I just want each one of you to find a way to worship, 12:50 give it a try, see how it affects your health. 12:53 Let me pray with you this moment. 12:55 Father, God, as we come to You, 12:59 we want to come to You 13:01 asking You to help us to worship. 13:03 Show us how You want us to worship 13:05 in our lives, Father. 13:07 And thank You for designing us to be with You. 13:11 Even though we don't understand everything about our health 13:14 and don't understand at all, Father, 13:17 we trust You that Your way is the best way, 13:20 and science is now proving this, Father. 13:23 And we want to thank You for all the benefits. 13:25 Now go with us to stay 13:27 and help keep us in a state of worship 13:29 so that we might be improved in not only our health 13:33 but we have hope for today, hope for tomorrow, 13:35 and hope for eternity. 13:37 And please help us to share these ideas 13:39 with our friends and neighbors 13:41 so they might find the joy 13:43 of being with You is our prayer. 13:45 Amen. 13:47 I want to thank you for spending time with us today 13:50 on the Ultimate Prescription. 13:52 I hope this has opened your eyes 13:54 to something new that you can apply 13:55 to your life 13:57 or that you might share with someone else 13:59 like we want to. 14:01 If you might have a question, 14:03 I encourage you to go visit our website, 14:05 that's HeartwiseMinistries.org. |
