00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm your host Nick Evenson, here with Dr. James Marcum. 00:04 And, Dr. Marcum, today we're talking 00:06 about cardiovascular disease. 00:08 And you kind of laid out what it is 00:10 and what the cardiovascular system is. 00:12 But recap just a little bit about what we discussed. 00:14 Well, you know, this is a very complex topic 00:17 and we can't cover everything. 00:18 But the key points I wanna let people know 00:21 is that we all have bad genes, 00:23 and ultimately we all need a savior. 00:26 And we have our genes that get bad 00:28 and we put stress on those genes, 00:30 when those genes malfunctions we have symptoms. 00:33 So we wanna do everything we can 00:35 to keep stress off our genetics. 00:37 We wanna learn when to apply modern medicine 00:39 if we have symptoms. 00:41 We wanna have the power to have lifestyle changes. 00:43 And we realize that lifestyle might be nutrition, 00:46 it might be sleeping better. 00:48 Every aspect of our life 00:49 can affect the expression of genes 00:51 'cause it can put stress on it. 00:53 Which stressor individually is the greatest, 00:55 is really genetically determined. 00:57 So I don't know about your family 00:59 but you know, my family, 01:00 we've diabetes that runs in our family. 01:02 Some people have other genetic things, 01:05 some people store fat in the arteries, 01:06 some people store fat in the arteries 01:07 of the brain, the heart etc. 01:09 So if we do store fat, we wanna have less fat in us, 01:12 so we wanna go to a healthier nutrition. 01:15 We also know that when people sit around, 01:17 things get older quicker. 01:19 You know, you get stiff. Right. 01:20 So all of these different stressors 01:22 effect genetic expression. 01:24 When we have genes malfunction, we have a symptom, 01:26 then we run to the doctor. 01:28 So that's a key, 01:29 but we also know no matter what this is, 01:31 some people like the gentleman I talked about, 01:34 he had heart disease at a young age. 01:36 So sometimes no matter what we do, 01:38 we still have problems 01:40 and that's when we really know 01:41 the most important thing 01:43 is to have our spiritual life intact, 01:45 because God heals us in His time, in His ways. 01:49 So as long as we're walking with Him, 01:51 that's very, very reassuring 01:53 and that is treatment for diseases itself 01:55 'cause it gives us reassurance today 01:58 that we're doing everything we can, 01:59 and hope for eternity. 02:01 And we also want to learn eventually, 02:03 as we talked today about different things 02:05 biblically we can use to apply to our life, 02:07 to actually treat and prevent the expression 02:10 of this genetic problems. 02:12 That's right. 02:13 You know sometimes just having the hope of, 02:14 you know, being reunited with our loved ones 02:16 and with Jesus someday, that can reduce the stress. 02:18 Yes. 02:19 And that's actually, it manifests 02:21 in physical benefits sometimes as well. 02:22 You know, and I had a colleague 02:25 tell me about a friend that had... 02:28 He was a doctor friend of mine. 02:29 He had patient that had a little lesion in his liver, 02:33 and it was right near a vein called the portal vein. 02:36 And we weren't sure what that lesion was, 02:38 whether it was a cancerous or benign, 02:41 but it was in a hard spot to biopsy. 02:43 Right. 02:45 So the decision was made 02:46 just to keep an eye on it, okay. 02:48 But this guy got so scared that it affect his genetics, 02:52 he made adrenaline and cortisol, 02:54 all the stress chemistry, 02:56 and he died about one year into his diagnosis. 03:00 So they did the autopsy 03:01 and found out that this was benign. 03:04 He had no real problem. 03:05 He basically died from fear. 03:07 And even in the heart world 03:10 we have these conditions called the broken hearts syndrome 03:13 where we have a lot of stress and fear. 03:15 Stress and fear also damages our body. 03:18 These are major stress 03:19 that affect some people more than another. 03:22 So when God says, be anxious about nothing, 03:24 there's real Bible truths behind that. 03:27 Yeah. 03:28 Let's get back to cardiovascular disease. 03:30 So let's talk about some of the symptoms. 03:31 We already discussed, 03:33 there's a lot of different conditions 03:34 that can be involved with cardiovascular disease. 03:36 But what are some of the symptoms 03:37 that people might experience? 03:38 I know, tightness in the chest, or pain in the chest, but... 03:40 Well, first I think it's important 03:42 that we define the word symptoms, okay? 03:45 Okay, yeah. 03:46 Symptoms is anything an individual has 03:49 that does not feel right. 03:50 Okay? 03:52 And it could be many different expressions. 03:54 Now in the heart, okay, for instance, 03:56 a chest pressure or something that won't go away. 03:59 Well, that could be a heart attack, 04:01 also be it reflux, lot of things, 04:02 but heart attack can kill you quick. 04:05 So any discomfort I tell, 04:06 any discomfort or abnormal feeling 04:09 above the waist that won't go away, 04:11 needs to be evaluated. 04:13 Sometimes it could be pressure, sometimes it could be pain, 04:16 sometimes you could feel like indigestion. 04:18 Sometimes it could be extreme shortness of breath. 04:21 Sometimes it could be dizziness passing out. 04:24 Sometimes it could be a fast heartbeat. 04:26 But all of these are abnormal feelings 04:28 that need to be investigated right now. 04:31 So the symptoms vary 04:32 and in diabetics the symptoms are much different, 04:35 in women they are much different, 04:36 the older you get the most different. 04:38 But in all my years of practice, 04:40 I tell people that any symptom 04:42 above the waist that's unexplainable 04:45 and that won't go away, 04:46 you need to get evaluated right now. 04:49 So that's one class, one class of people. 04:51 Okay. 04:52 Do you have a question? Well, I was gonna ask. 04:54 So I know some times people are reluctant, right? 04:56 'Cause we don't wanna waste money, 04:57 we don't want to go to the hospital, 04:59 whack up this wheel, and then have it be nothing. 05:00 Yes. 05:02 But what do people need to do though, 05:03 like should they be reluctant 05:04 or should they get it checked out? 05:06 No, no. This is important? 05:07 If you have a symptom that's unexplained, 05:08 that's your body is saying something is not right. 05:11 I'm having one of these malfunctions 05:13 that we talked about. 05:15 You know, if I've had a little bit of disease, 05:17 now, it's a lot of disease, 05:18 I need to know what's going on. 05:20 And as time goes on, 05:22 you know when you're younger 05:23 you don't have all these feelings. 05:25 But as people age, 05:26 every part of the body ages, 05:27 there's gonna be more symptoms. 05:29 Yeah. 05:30 And you have to explain what they are 05:32 'cause you wanna make sure it's not something 05:33 that's going to kill you, right? 05:34 Right, right. 05:36 Now, it's very important, so that's one class, 05:38 symptoms that starts right now that won't go away. 05:40 Okay. Okay? 05:42 Now there's another class of symptoms 05:43 related to the heart, 05:46 things that happen intermittently, okay? 05:48 Let's say, you used to be able to ride your bike every day. 05:51 Okay, you like to ride your bike. 05:53 Yep, love it. Okay? 05:54 Let's say every time, you'd go up a hill now, 05:56 you have a funny feeling in the heart, in this area. 06:00 And then when you slow down it goes away. 06:04 Well, that could be a heart symptom 06:05 'cause when the heart's under stress 06:07 it starts malfunctioning, it experienced 06:10 and then when it slows down it's relaxed, it goes away, 06:13 so that could be a symptom. 06:14 Let's say when you overdo it, 06:16 you get extremely short of breath, 06:17 much more than you ever had before. 06:20 That could be a symptom. 06:21 So a symptom that comes on, 06:23 when you used to be able to do a certain amount of activity 06:26 that you can't do any more, that could be a sign 06:29 that the heart or blood vessels 06:30 aren't getting enough oxygen to your cells, 06:33 and that part of the body is not performing well. 06:36 Right, yeah. 06:37 Does that make sense to you? Yeah. 06:38 Okay, and the most common ones I see is, 06:41 is a person who used to be able to walk up a hill, 06:43 now he can't do it, he's short of breath, 06:44 he has tightness, he has a funny feeling, 06:46 that is classic heart. 06:48 And some people say, "Oh, I'm just gonna ignore it, 06:50 I've just had a bad day." 06:52 But usually overtime, it gets progressively worse. 06:55 And if it gets progressively worse, 06:57 it's nice to nip it in the bud 06:59 to find out before that problem progresses 07:02 into a problem that won't go away 07:04 which is getting into a medical emergency. 07:07 Now when we talk about abnormal feelings, 07:10 it's so different for different people. 07:13 And when I've looked at things, there's no black or white, 07:16 there's lot of grey in life. 07:18 So a symptom for you might be a little bit different 07:20 than a symptom for someone else. 07:22 And that's why it's real important for people 07:25 to listen to each other, 07:26 talk about these abnormal feelings that we have. 07:29 I've had some people that all they have 07:30 is a numbness in their jaw when they do things. 07:34 Some heart attacks are presented 07:35 as pain in the shoulder blades, 07:38 but regardless they had been symptoms 07:40 that are unexplainable. 07:42 Okay, for instance, 07:43 if every time you walk you had pain 07:44 in your shoulder blade and I said, 07:46 "Nick, have you hurt your shoulder blade, 07:48 have you traumatized it?" 07:49 "No", then I'll say, "You have a heart problem." 07:52 And then we'd start investigating 07:54 to see the magnitude of it, 07:56 but at the same time I'd say, 07:57 "You know, this is an acute symptom, 07:59 something caused it to happen, 08:01 let's investigate that as well. 08:03 So there's many different aspects, 08:05 but any time a person is experiencing something 08:08 that doesn't feel right, that won't go away, 08:10 that's a trip to the doctor emergency room. 08:12 Right now anytime they have constant feelings 08:16 when they do thing that goes away 08:17 when you rest, 08:19 you need to make an appointment. 08:20 Now lots of people have funny heartbeats and skips 08:22 and things that they don't know what it is. 08:24 Sometimes it can be explained, 08:26 you know sometimes you eat something 08:27 and it doesn't feel right. 08:29 Well, you know it's related to something you ate. 08:31 You know, but sometimes 08:32 you have a funny indigestion like feeling 08:34 when you're walking and you haven't eaten anything. 08:36 Right. 08:37 Well, that could be related to your heart. 08:39 So I tell people since cardiovascular disease 08:41 is number one cause of death, 08:43 and heart attacks cause death, 08:45 they need to get these symptoms investigated 08:47 right, right away. 08:49 Yeah, yeah. 08:50 So if you are at home 08:51 and you're experiencing symptoms 08:53 or maybe recently you've experienced them, 08:54 get it checked out. 08:56 Don't just wait and think you're tough 08:57 and then you're gonna, 08:58 you're gonna save lot of money, necessarily. 09:00 Get it checked out, that's really 09:02 an important thing to do. 09:03 Now, Dr. Marcum, 09:04 you got an interesting perspective on health. 09:06 And you mentioned earlier 09:07 that you're gonna share biblical prescription with us. 09:08 Let's talk about that a little bit. 09:10 Yeah. 09:11 Well, there's many different texts in the Bible 09:13 that can lead us to better health 09:15 and to turn off the genes 09:17 and also to give us hope and courage. 09:19 And the one I want to share with us today 09:23 is from 1 Thessalonians 5:18. 09:26 1 Thessalonians 5:18, 09:28 and we'll get that text up 09:30 for all of our viewers to look at. 09:32 And let me read it to you from my scripture here, 09:35 "In everything give thanks: 09:38 for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 09:42 Everything! 09:44 Thanking for your symptoms, thanking for the good, 09:48 thanking for the bad, in everything give thanks. 09:51 And we've done the studies 09:53 and it shown when people give thanks, 09:55 guess what happens? 09:56 They turn off the stress chemistry, 09:59 blood pressure lowers, less heart attacks, 10:02 they rest better and in our busy world 10:04 sometimes we don't have time to thank God 10:07 for our illnesses, for our difficulties, 10:09 for everything give thanks 10:11 because that's a biblical prescription, 10:13 'cause that changes the physiology, 10:15 especially of aging. 10:17 It slowly slows down some of all the bad things 10:19 that's happening in our body. 10:21 So that's the biblical prescription 10:22 I want to lead today. 10:24 Not in just the good things, 10:25 in everything give thanks, 10:27 that is a true biblical prescription. 10:30 Yeah, and for you at home, 10:31 if you've enjoyed today's discussion, 10:33 we'd like to send you at HearwiseMinistries.org. 10:36 That's Dr. Marcum's website 10:37 where you can find more biblical prescriptions. 10:40 You can also go on there and list your prayers, 10:41 if you have some need you like us to pray about. 10:43 And you can find a lot of great health information 10:45 at HearwiseMinistries.org. 10:48 And there's also a new biblical prescriptions app 10:51 which I will tell you more about in another show. 10:53 So make sure you watch the Ultimate Prescription. 10:55 And, Dr. Marcum, thank you for joining us today. 10:57 The other is the biblical prescriptions app 10:59 we were just talking about, 11:00 I mean it's a free mobile device, 11:02 it'll give you a daily scripture 11:04 that you can focus on, 11:05 which is gonna give you better health when you worship. 11:07 Yeah, and also gives you biblical prescriptions 11:09 that you can apply 11:11 to help improve your aging process. 11:12 So maybe we don't have this 11:14 and also connects you with God on a regular basis 11:17 who is the ultimate source of healing. 11:19 And if you might have a question, 11:20 we have a website. 11:22 You can ask questions. 11:23 We can pray for you, 11:24 we want to serve your spiritual needs. 11:26 Yeah. 11:27 Well, Dr. Marcum, thank you very much 11:29 for sharing with us about cardiovascular disease, 11:30 and we'll look forward tomorrow on another program. 11:31 Okay. 11:33 It's all the time we've today on the Ultimate Prescription. 11:34 Thank you for joining us, God bless. 11:35 Dr. Marcum is gonna end with prayer 11:37 in just a moment. 11:47 We've talked about many different aspects 11:50 of cardiovascular disease today. 11:53 And unfortunately I had bad genes 11:55 and I need a savior. 11:57 You have bad genes and you need a savior. 11:59 But I'm so glad that we have that savior 12:01 that helps us know the place for modern medicine. 12:04 When do we need to get help, when do we need to call 911?
