00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm your host, Nick Evenson. 00:04 And today we're talking with Dr. Marcum 00:05 about coronary artery disease. 00:06 Dr. Marcum? Yeah. 00:08 We've talked about how coronaries are the arteries 00:11 that feed the heart, the nourishment. 00:13 Remember these blood vessels go all throughout the body, 00:16 but the heart's the one that pumps, 00:19 supplies all the nutrients and everything we need. 00:22 When these arteries get damaged 00:24 either from a clogged up or a clot in them or whatever, 00:28 it's a medical emergency. 00:30 And if a personnel know they have an medical emergency 00:33 'cause he have a symptom. 00:34 Something doesn't feel right. 00:35 You gotta get help right away. 00:37 So don't sit at home, say, "Oh, I have some heart burn. 00:40 Oh, this is not a big deal. 00:41 Oh, I pulled a muscle." Right. 00:43 If you can't explain it, you gotta... 00:45 I, in my opinion you have to assume 00:47 it's a heart attack until you prove it's not. 00:50 Since it's a number one cause of death, 00:52 and if it's one of these little plaques 00:53 that we talked about previously, 00:55 becoming unstable and rupturing, 00:57 you could have sudden death 00:58 if you don't get treated right away. 00:59 Right. 01:01 So it's a medical emergency, 01:02 we've to call 911, we can't ignore them. 01:04 So we've got a video 01:06 that we'd like to take a look at 01:07 and have you comment on, Dr. Marcum, 01:08 of a heart attack and a stent. 01:10 Let's take a took at that and tell us 01:11 what's going on here? 01:13 Well, this person has had a heart attack. 01:15 He has gone to the hospital, he needs help right away. 01:18 And you can see the part, it's turning dark, 01:20 that's the part it's not getting enough blood. 01:23 And if they don't do something very quickly, 01:25 the heart's gonna have damage. 01:27 So here is, a stent being placed, 01:29 the blockage is up there, 01:31 we can see the stent which is metal, 01:33 squishing the blockage and the plaque 01:36 and then we remove the catheter there 01:38 and there we've a stent 01:39 restoring blood flow to the heart. 01:41 That's one treatment of acute. 01:43 Now sometimes it doesn't work out so well, 01:46 we've to get bypass around the blockages. 01:48 And this is a team 01:50 that's actually doing bypass surgery, 01:52 where if there's blockages 01:53 we can't put a stent in for whatever 01:55 and we're doing emergency bypass, 01:57 we're taking one blood vessel 01:59 and bringing itself to the blockage 02:01 to restore nourishment to the heart, 02:03 so the heart can pump better, 02:05 so it can get blood to every organ in the body. 02:08 So acute care of hearts is a medical emergency, 02:12 it's something that modern medicine 02:14 does very well, Nick. 02:15 Yeah. 02:17 Modern medicine is great for treating emergencies. 02:20 If I'm having an heart attack, I won't have a stent. 02:22 Absolutely, yeah. 02:23 You know, if I can't walk across a room 02:25 'cause I'm so clogged up, I wanna have a bypass surgery. 02:28 My heart's going too slow, I want a pacemaker. 02:33 If I have a bleeding spell, give me some blood. 02:35 You know, if, you know 02:37 so modern medicine is great for acute emergencies. 02:40 Right. 02:41 Not so good about preventing chronic disease, 02:45 and definitely not great at fixing bad genetics. 02:49 And we've talked about this thing, 02:51 the only thing that can fix bad genes is Jesus. 02:54 But we can maybe slowdown the expression with lifestyle 02:57 and then we can know 02:58 when we're in an emergency situation, 03:00 what to do? 03:01 And when there's a place for modern medicine. 03:03 'Cause some people can do everything perfect 03:05 and still have these bad things happen, 03:07 still need a stent. 03:09 So that's why not only focus on the acute care, 03:11 but down the road we say, 03:13 "Well, what could have caused this to happen?" 03:15 So when a chronic situation like that, let's talk, 03:17 what are the top few things that you will tell people 03:21 that they need to be looking at doing 03:23 in a chronic situation where they have an issue? 03:24 Okay. 03:26 So what do you from, 03:27 person's having symptoms or no symptoms at all 03:29 or already had the event? 03:30 So let's say, they already had an event. 03:32 Okay. 03:33 What would you recommend for that? 03:34 So let's say, you've had a bypass surgery, 03:36 and I've had bypass surgeries 03:37 in 20 year olds, 30 year olds, 40 year olds. 03:40 So when they come back, I said, 03:41 "Well, the first thing we do is treat the symptom." 03:45 And we treat the symptoms with modern medicines, 03:47 stents, bypass, medications. 03:50 Then I have to convince that person. 03:52 For you instance I said, you know, Nick, 03:55 we treated the symptom but not the cause. 03:58 And then you get curious, well, what could cause it? 04:00 Well, I might ask you about your genetics, 04:02 and you say, "Well, my dad had a heart attack 04:03 when he was very young." 04:05 I said, "Well, you're predisposed 04:06 to having damage to your arteries, 04:08 they are aging quicker. 04:09 What can we do to slow down aging? 04:11 What can we slowdown to putting these fat 04:13 which can trigger these heart attacks 04:15 in the arteries. 04:16 So we might talk about different stressors 04:18 on the blood vessels like nutrition. 04:21 We know that fat is damaging if we take too much fat in. 04:24 So I might say, Nick, why don't we try 04:26 to turn this disease off a little bit 04:28 with a plant based diet. 04:29 Okay? Right. 04:31 So I might talk to you about eating more plants. 04:34 And I said, I'll say, "You know that ice cream, 04:36 lots of fat, cheese, lots of fat." 04:38 If you eat more than 10 04:40 to 15% your calories and your fat, 04:41 and you have genetics, it stores it. 04:43 Right. 04:44 So I said, so that could damage your arteries. 04:46 And, Nick, you smoke. 04:49 That's not good, that can damage your arteries, 04:51 can constrict them, it can cause damage. 04:53 And, Nick, your life is too stressful, 04:56 you're worried all the time, 04:57 and you stay up too late at night 04:59 and you work too hard. 05:00 And all that makes adrenaline and cortisol 05:02 which dries up your blood pressure, 05:04 damages the inside lining, ages them quicker, 05:08 makes you more susceptible to have aging. 05:10 Have you ever looked at a president 05:11 before and after he gets office? 05:13 I've seen some of those pictures. 05:14 Yeah, they get old, right? They're quite dramatic. 05:16 So any type of stress can make us, 05:18 our genetics older including mental stress. 05:21 So I might look at your life and say, 05:22 "Listen, are you sleeping enough? 05:24 You've the stress of life from not sleeping enough." 05:27 A lot of people have stress 05:28 just because they don't move the body. 05:31 So I would look at, some people have stress 05:33 because they don't drink enough water. 05:34 Right. 05:35 So in treating, 05:37 and this would treat the arteries 05:38 that are already diseased, 05:40 I would say let's do all of this 05:41 and maybe we can prevent disease. 05:42 I really focus on movement, 05:44 because movement can grow new blood vessels in the heart. 05:47 It can make the arteries bigger, okay? 05:49 I would focus on nutrition, like we talked about 05:52 because that could actually reverse disease. 05:55 We have studies that show that people 05:56 that get on plant based diets, stress reduction, exercise 06:00 depending on their genetics, 06:02 they can get the plaques out of the arteries. 06:04 So they can lessen their chance 06:06 of having another acute events. 06:08 We talked about oxidation 06:09 and all the things we do in life that, 06:11 that turns on this rusting process 06:13 in the body. 06:14 So we'd sort of look at everything, 06:16 and then I would sort of pick the thing 06:17 that we'd wanna work on first, 06:19 one step at a time. 06:21 But I'd say, 06:22 but if you ever have a symptom 06:23 you gotta get help right now. 06:25 Right. 06:26 And then let's work on these and hopefully, 06:28 you have genetics 06:29 that won't keep this from happening. 06:30 Now lot of people can't do this, Nick. 06:32 They say, "I can't do this, I can't do this." 06:34 And I say, "Well, I think I can help you a little bit. 06:37 You know, let's focus on the positives." 06:39 And then I would sort of turn them to... 06:41 There's worship. 06:43 I say, "God gives us the power to do things 06:46 that we don't think we can do on our own." 06:47 Yeah. 06:49 You know sometimes it sounds like, 06:51 just these little things like drinking enough water, 06:53 it seems like they kind of unimportant 06:54 but they make a big difference. 06:56 Now you mentioned plant based nutrition, 06:58 I know that, we've talked in the past about greens 07:00 and how powerful they can be 07:02 in helping the cardiovascular system. 07:04 Tell us what's happening when we are eating greens? 07:06 Greens are probably one of the best treatments 07:09 for heart disease 07:10 and best ways to prevent heart disease. 07:13 Greens have very powerful chemicals, 07:16 you know, and when they get in the body, 07:17 they make nitrous oxide, 07:19 yeah, converted nitrous oxide 07:20 which makes the arteries bigger, 07:21 it helps, the inside linings stay healthier 07:24 and it does a lot of good things. 07:26 So I tell my heart patients to try 07:28 to eat something green every day. 07:30 And then they always ask me, 07:32 "Well, what are the bad things to eat?" 07:33 And I say, "Well you know, and things that have fat in it, 07:36 cheese not so good, 07:38 ice cream not so good, 07:41 meat, dairy not so good, 07:43 processed foods not so good" 07:45 'cause also people don't realize... 07:47 Remember, the arteries that feed the heart 07:49 can be damaged by high blood pressure. 07:51 If pressure is high day in day out, 07:53 we get that in a lot of foods 07:55 with sodium in it, processed foods. 07:58 We get a lot of processed foods, 07:59 lot of sodium, it damages the vessel, 08:01 the endothelium makes it more prone 08:04 to have these plaques, 08:05 aging of the artery, oxidation, 08:08 this whole process occurs again and again. 08:11 The average person only needs 08:13 about 500 milligrams of sodium a day, 08:15 but in America we take as much as 3500 milligrams a day. 08:20 And depending on your genetics, it can damage your vessels, 08:24 they wear out. 08:25 When a vessel wears out, you get a symptom, 08:27 then you go to the doctor for modern medicine. 08:30 So there's a lot of lifestyle choices 08:32 that it sounds like you recommend 08:33 to your patients. 08:34 What would you say is may be the most important thing 08:37 to help them have success in changing 08:39 some of these lifestyle habits of theirs. 08:41 I really think after doing this for nearly 30 years, 08:44 that the key to health and lifestyle is worship. 08:48 Because when we come to God, 08:50 He gives us the power to change things 08:53 for the right reasons. 08:55 He knows our hearts, He knows how to help us, 08:57 He knows, you know He wants us to be well. 09:00 Now sometimes He chooses not to do things, 09:03 but we just got to trust Him, 09:05 you know, for His will and ask every day. 09:06 So I try to encourage all my patients 09:09 to get in a worship program, 09:11 where they get God to help them, 09:12 to feel His power in his life. 09:14 And God also gives, 09:16 you know, different biblical prescriptions 09:17 and texts in the Bible that could also help us. 09:20 And as they done that, I say, 09:22 "Well, let's work on one step at a time, 09:24 let's not get discouraged, you know, 09:26 let's, maybe just focus on this and this." 09:28 And I'd say, "Let's not focus on the negatives, 09:31 but the positive things we can do, 09:32 so we don't have to use modern medicine 09:35 like we've seen here." 09:36 The coronary disease is so common in this world. 09:40 You know, certain animals that never have stress 09:43 or that never have. 09:44 I think about elephants. 09:46 Elephants eat a plant-based diet, 09:47 they drink a lot of water, 09:49 they're happy all the time, they're not stressed, 09:51 they get out in the sunshine. 09:52 You know, we don't think they have heart attacks, right? 09:54 Yeah. 09:56 So we wanna be more like elephants. 09:57 But we all do have genetic susceptibilities 09:59 that we have to pay attention to. 10:01 Yeah. 10:02 Well, we've got a biblical prescription 10:04 that you've prepared for us. 10:05 So you mention that's 10:07 one of the best things we can do is, 10:08 is turn to the scriptures to help us learn 10:10 and be able to follow God's plan for our life. 10:12 So why don't you share that with us now? 10:13 Well, a biblical prescription is something 10:15 that God gives us in the scriptures 10:18 that we can depend on 10:20 and sometimes there is science, 10:21 you know, it's not there to prove it. 10:22 But just 'cause something hasn't been proven 10:25 doesn't mean it's not true. 10:27 But the scripture is always faithful. 10:29 God tells us there's some benefit in scripture. 10:32 So I look at the scriptures, 10:34 I try to find the evidence behind it, 10:36 the science and then apply this as a prescription, 10:39 something a person can use to change their physiology. 10:43 So today I like us to focus on Genesis 1:29, 10:49 "And God said, and God said, 10:51 'See, I have given you every herb that yields seed 10:54 which is on the face of all the earth, 10:56 and every tree whose fruit yields seed, 10:59 to you it shall be for food or for meat." 11:02 Okay? Yeah. 11:04 It really meant food in that thing. 11:05 So God has given us basically plants to eat. 11:10 So plants are good for us, okay? 11:13 And we now have the studies 11:15 that show that people that eat plant-based diets 11:18 have less evidences of cardiovascular disease. 11:21 We now have evidence 11:22 that we can actually reverse this disease 11:25 with plant-based diets. 11:27 And so this is something that God gave us 11:29 way back long time ago. 11:31 He says, "You listen, 11:32 this is my recommendation to you 11:34 that you eat plants. 11:35 This is the benefit of eating plants." 11:38 And now we have the evidence 11:39 that eating a plant-based diet 11:41 lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease. 11:44 It can be used, is not only to way to prevent disease 11:46 and aging of the body, but to prevent disease. 11:49 These plants have 11:51 powerful antioxidants, phytonutrients, 11:54 all good things that can lower the risk 11:57 of us having coronary disease that effects the heart. 12:00 Yeah. 12:01 You know, it reminds me story of Daniel. 12:03 He knew what he was, 12:04 what he was doing way before our time 12:07 when he asked for a plant-based diet. 12:10 Yeah. That's fantastic. 12:11 Well, Dr. Marcum, thank you very much 12:12 for sharing with us today. 12:14 I understand a bit more 12:15 about coronary artery disease myself, 12:17 and I'm sure our listeners at home 12:19 will really appreciate this conversation. 12:21 Where can people go 12:22 when they wanna learn more about health 12:24 from faith based perspective? 12:25 Well, there's lots of places, they wanna look at our website 12:28 HeartWiseMinistries.org. 12:30 We answer people's questions. 12:31 We have a lot of resources, prayer pages, 12:33 ways to learn about the balance of all this. 12:37 Also we created an app, 12:38 a biblical prescription app that people can actually use 12:42 and download on their device for free 12:45 that walks them through worship, 12:47 also gives them great hints 12:49 to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, 12:51 and if they are having problems, 12:52 get help right away. 12:54 Dr. Marcum, thank you very much for sharing with us today, 12:56 and viewers we hope you've enjoyed today's program 12:58 on the Ultimate Prescription. 12:59 That's all the time we have for now. 13:00 We look forward to sharing more with you 13:02 in a moment, and Dr. Marcum 13:03 will close the program with prayer. 13:12 Let's spend a moment and go 13:14 to the Ultimate Physician in prayer. 13:18 Father God, there's some out there 13:19 that need Your special help today. 13:22 Some might have experienced coronary disease 13:24 or in family members. 13:25 We wanna pray 13:27 that you be especially close to them 13:28 and lead us to health, Father, 13:30 help us to continue in worship 13:32 and show us the balance in life, 13:34 is our most humble prayer. 13:36 Amen. 13:38 I wanna thank each one of you 13:39 for joining us today on Ultimate Prescription, 13:43 and stay with us frequently, 13:44 and we'll be talking more about your health concerns. |
