00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm Nick Evenson here with Dr. James Marcum. 00:04 And on today's program, 00:05 we've been talking about slowing disease. 00:07 And a lot of that has to do with lifestyle choices. 00:09 And, Dr. Marcum, you shared about a new book 00:12 that you're gonna be working on 00:13 to help get that word out to more people. 00:14 Slow but sure, I've been working on this, 00:16 Nick, and thinking back over many years, 00:19 you know, I've been making television programs 00:22 since probably about 2004, 2005. 00:25 And, you know, the approach has changed through the years 00:29 based on maturity, and knowledge, 00:31 and interactions. 00:33 And I've been blessed with having interacted 00:36 with some of the best minds in the United States. 00:39 And I get some of the most interesting patients 00:42 and challenges ever in the office every week. 00:45 And I try to ask God for wisdom, 00:48 and let Him guide me in things I should learn 00:52 and things I should stay 00:53 and how to put this all together. 00:56 And over time, you know, life changes dramatically. 00:59 Yeah. 01:01 And sometimes, you know, 01:02 I can boil a lot of what I've learned 01:04 over the last nearly 30 years now 01:07 in the just a few sentences now. 01:09 And one is that we all have bad genes. 01:14 We all need a savior. 01:15 Yeah. 01:16 And as long as we have that in our health, 01:19 we're in a safe place. 01:22 And that's why, you know, 01:24 I wanted to talk about the importance of worship. 01:27 Worship is the key 'cause when we walk with God, 01:31 He helps us to make the lifestyle changes, 01:33 helps us with lifestyle medicine, 01:35 but sometimes God doesn't allow everyone to be well 01:38 in the short-term. 01:40 Sometimes He uses our illnesses to heal us permanently. 01:44 Some people that are perfectly healthy 01:45 might not turn to God for help. 01:47 You know, they might think they can do it all themselves. 01:50 But no, we all have bad genes. 01:53 We all need a savior. 01:54 And that's one thing that I learned 01:56 there's nothing wrong with modern medicine, 01:58 but some people fall off that ditch of thinking 02:00 that medicines can fix everything. 02:02 And they also have a lot of fear in their lives, okay? 02:06 Because they fear the unknown, they fear the ultimate demise, 02:09 we all gonna wear out at some point. 02:11 Then there's the other ditch of the ditch of lifestyle, 02:15 there's something I can do to heal 02:16 myself perfectly. 02:18 The way I eat, the way I exercise, 02:20 the way I think I can do it, I can do it, I can do it. 02:23 But no, that's a dangerous ditch as well. 02:26 But the path really to true healing is keeping 02:28 our eyes on Jesus 02:30 because that's gonna help us 02:31 to have the power for the right reasons for the lifestyle, 02:34 to know the appropriate place for modern medicine, 02:37 and to realize we all have bad genes, 02:40 and we have this need for a savior. 02:42 And there's nothing that we do. 02:44 There's nothing that we believe that does that. 02:47 God saves us and allows us as we walk with Him. 02:51 So that was why I wanted to put some effort into developing 02:54 and researching what worship is? 02:57 And we spent quite a bit of time researching... 03:00 Well, what does 10 minutes of worship look like? 03:04 Why 10 minutes? 03:05 Because that's what the studies have shown. 03:07 You know, in our world, 03:08 everyone wants to do things fast. 03:10 What does worship look like? 03:12 And that's why worship starts, 03:13 you know, with warming up 03:16 getting ready to meet with the Savior. 03:18 You know, if you met 03:19 with the President of the United States, 03:21 you put your tie on 03:22 and brush your teeth, you know... 03:24 Right. 03:25 When you meet with the God of the universe, 03:27 I believe there are certain things 03:28 we have to do. 03:29 Yeah. Okay. 03:31 There's some warm-up, 03:32 we have to get some of that stress off our brain. 03:33 I believe that when we come to God, 03:35 you know, we have to pray asking, asking, 03:37 you know, when He says, 03:39 "You knock at my heart I'm gonna let you in." 03:41 Ask Jesus to come into my life, 03:43 to forgive my sins, to make me clean. 03:45 Ask the Holy Spirit to my life, then we're forgiven, 03:48 then we can come to the God of the universe in worship. 03:51 Have a short worship prayer, and then, 03:54 you know, thank and praise. 03:56 You know, our God wants to be thanked and praised. 03:58 He doesn't need us. 04:00 You know, He's got us safe in His hands no matter what, 04:03 He doesn't need us any way, shape, or form, He allows us. 04:06 So we can have a closer relationship with Him. 04:10 And as we worship through 04:11 the course of days in and days out, 04:13 we will be changed. 04:14 That's right. We will be changed. 04:16 And that, in my opinion, 04:18 after all these years of working 04:20 with all this modern technology and lifestyle, 04:23 I think that is the single key to health is our worship. 04:27 And I want everyone to remember that if nothing else, 04:30 I wanna encourage people for their health, 04:32 stay in worship. 04:34 I don't think there's a better source 04:36 of hope than that. 04:37 It's just knowing that we're safe in Jesus, 04:38 and that regardless 04:40 what happens with our medical conditions, 04:42 God got us in His hands. 04:43 That's correct. 04:44 And then we've got a few questions 04:46 that have come into our website. 04:47 We do. 04:49 We have a lot of questions, 04:50 HeartWiseMinistries.org is the website. 04:51 If you have a question, you can go there. 04:53 And someone from our team will respond in a timely manner, 04:56 and I get you some general advice 04:57 to point you in the right direction. 04:59 So go ahead and go there and ask the doctor 05:00 a question on our website. 05:02 So let's start with this question here. 05:04 Someone writes in and asks, 05:05 "Are there different types of cardiologists?" 05:07 Yes, there are. 05:08 And there are many different types now. 05:10 There used to be just one type, okay? 05:12 But as years have gone on, we have different types. 05:15 In my group alone, 05:17 there are doctors that just specialize 05:20 in the rhythms. 05:21 They're called electrophysiologist. 05:23 Okay. 05:24 They're specialists in deciding what rhythm's dangerous, 05:28 and what we could live with, what we should treat. 05:30 They can do procedures where they destroy 05:33 certain types of rhythms that's called ablations. 05:36 They're specialists in putting in pacemakers 05:38 which speed up the heart. 05:40 There they work also on defibrillators 05:42 which treat dangerous heart rhythms 05:44 deciding when there can be put on. 05:46 And in rhythm management, 05:48 which medicines are worth the risks. 05:51 So that's one type. 05:52 They just deal with rhythms. 05:54 We have the plumbers in our group. 05:56 All they deal with is arteries. 05:57 They put stents in, high-risk stents. 06:00 You know, we have special devices 06:02 where we can work on arteries we couldn't work on before, 06:05 thanks to some innovations like the Impella device, 06:10 which put in the heart so we can work on it, 06:12 why it still has to beat. 06:15 All sorts of new innovations, 06:16 we have stents of different types, 06:18 different shapes, different sizes, 06:20 we now open up arteries 06:21 that are once totally blocked off. 06:24 Chronic total occlusions were opening up 06:26 so we have a set of doctors that do that. 06:29 They're called interventional cardiologist. 06:32 We also have another group 06:34 that deals with just structural heart disease. 06:37 I have doctors in our group 06:38 that just specialize on putting mitral clips in. 06:42 I have doctors that specialize 06:43 in a procedure called the Watchman procedure. 06:46 I have doctors that just focus 06:47 on putting in aortic valves and procedure. 06:50 Then of course, in our group, we have the surgeons, 06:53 they're the ones that do the open-heart, 06:55 they replaced the arteries around the heart 06:57 that put in new heart valves. 06:59 Then we have the old ones 07:01 that have been around many years, 07:03 they call us general cardiologists. 07:06 Now I've tried to sort of develop a subspecialty 07:10 within that, that's in disease reversal. 07:13 So I'm one of the few in my group 07:15 that also focuses on if we can, reversing disease, 07:19 giving people the tool to slow down aging, 07:22 maybe reverse disease. 07:23 So I get some people 07:24 that maybe can't have procedures 07:26 that have failed medicines 07:27 that have some real tough situations in life. 07:30 I can definitely see 07:31 the advantage of having specialties. 07:33 Yeah. 07:34 You need a certain procedure done 07:35 we've got a guy who's a specialist in that. 07:37 Yeah. 07:38 And part of the reason 07:40 it's got so specialized in cardiovascular disease 07:41 is because the technology has grown so fast, 07:44 Nick. Yeah. 07:45 You know, and now some days in the future 07:47 there's gonna be specialists in bowel flora. 07:50 There's gonna be specialists in belief systems. 07:52 There's gonna be specialists in mental health 07:54 as it relates to disease. 07:56 There's this area is growing so fast and, 07:59 you know, there are still so many avenues 08:02 we don't understand. 08:03 But again, pointing back to the Bible. 08:05 The Bible has truths 08:07 that will stand all this change. 08:08 Yeah. 08:10 We've got another person who's visited the website 08:12 and submitted this question. 08:13 What are some good foods for the heart? 08:16 And I'm gonna go with one guess here. 08:19 Greens, I know you eat a lot of greens. 08:20 Yes, yes, yes. 08:21 I like to eat greens. 08:23 What are some other foods that are great for the heart? 08:24 Greens are great for the heart, 08:26 but in general, 08:27 all the fiber type foods, 08:29 you know, things that grow are good for the heart. 08:31 Fruits have antioxidants, which are beneficial. 08:35 Nuts have some omega-3 fatty acids 08:38 that seem to be beneficial for the body. 08:40 Of course, the greens help nitrousoxide 08:42 and its chemicals that make the arteries bigger 08:44 and healthier for the heart. 08:46 All of those things that grow 08:49 any type of fiber helps the bowel flora. 08:51 So the bowel flora is in charge of inflammation, 08:54 making chemicals like trimethylamine oxidase, 08:57 which can cause oxidation, 08:59 these plaques in arteries to become unstable. 09:02 A lot of different things in our body 09:03 that can help the bowel flora. 09:06 When we eat fiber improves, 09:08 that can also even help our brain health, 09:10 helps us with depression and anxiety. 09:12 So the body is uniquely interacted at multiple levels. 09:16 It's very fascinating. 09:18 As you start to learn, you realize 09:20 how complicated things really are. 09:22 Yeah, 09:23 I think we've got time just for one more question here. 09:25 And maybe you can tie 09:26 this in with a biblical prescription. 09:27 Someone writes and ask, 09:29 "Is mental stress dangerous to my heart?" 09:32 Yes, it is. 09:34 Whenever we have mental stress, 09:36 whether it's just a little bit like an anxiety disorder, 09:39 or ramped up of hiking phobias, 09:42 or even the highest levels of stress, 09:44 like post-traumatic stress or broken heart syndrome. 09:46 Yes, it turns on stress chemistry. 09:49 Stress chemistry ages not only the heart, 09:51 but it can age every different organ 09:53 in the body. 09:55 So stress is not a good thing. 09:57 Mental stress is not good at all. 09:58 Yeah, 10:00 let's take a look at our biblical prescription 10:01 for today. 10:02 We've prepared one here, what is it? 10:04 That's Matthew 11:28. 10:07 And this is one of my most favorite texts 10:10 in the Bible. 10:12 It says, "Come unto me, 10:14 all ye that labor and are heavy laden, 10:16 and I will give you rest." 10:19 So when you think about coming to me, 10:22 what's that mean? 10:23 Be with me, have a relationship with me, 10:26 worship me. 10:28 And there's many different ways to worship. 10:29 You know, we have a 10-minute app. 10:31 Some people, of course, worship in the word, 10:34 worship in praying, worship in service. 10:36 Some people worship in nature, 10:38 worship in serving other people, 10:40 worship in music and song and praise, 10:42 many different ways to worship, 10:44 but when we do these things, we're coming into Him. 10:46 So when we do that, 10:48 all you labor and are heavy laden, 10:49 I think that counts for stress. 10:51 Absolutely. 10:52 And that stress can come from anywhere. 10:54 And we talked about different types of stress, 10:57 and God will give us. 10:58 He gives us. 11:00 It's a free gift when we come to Him. 11:01 He gives us rest. 11:03 Nick, this is a wonderful biblical prescription 11:06 this text and for me personally, 11:09 it's one of my favorites 'cause I know 11:11 that no matter what happens in life, 11:14 no matter how stressed out I might be from the stress 11:17 I see and some of the stress that I don't see it all, 11:21 that when I worship, I can get a physical benefit, 11:25 and hope not only for today, but hope for eternity. 11:28 That's right. 11:30 Dr. Marcum, thank you very much for sharing. 11:32 You have a unique perspective 11:33 and some really inspiring ideas about health. 11:37 And thank you for sharing this. 11:38 My pleasure. 11:40 Viewers, if you would like more information 11:42 about where you can find resources for health. 11:44 If you want to ask the doctor a question through our website, 11:47 you can visit HeartWiseMinistries.org, 11:49 and you'll find a place there to ask the doctor. 11:52 You'll also find our prayer form 11:53 and you can go in there and submit a prayer request. 11:56 But then take a moment 11:57 and also please pray for the request 11:59 that other people have listed. 12:00 I'd also like to remind you 12:01 about our Biblical Prescriptions app. 12:03 It's a free download 12:05 on your Apple iOS device or on the Google Play Store, 12:08 you can download those. 12:09 And that will just give you a daily reminder 12:12 and a worship routine based around scripture, 12:14 so that you can help remember that scripture 12:16 and implement it in your life better every day. 12:19 And please also sign up for our newsletter. 12:21 There's a lot of great resources 12:23 on the website, and we just would like you 12:24 to stay engaged with us 12:25 and have a bit of a dialogue and build a relationship. 12:28 So thank you very much for watching today. 12:29 Dr. Marcum will close the program with prayer 12:31 in just a moment. 12:40 Let's take a moment right now 12:42 for each one of us to worship God through prayer. 12:46 Shall we bow our heads? 12:49 Dear Heavenly Father, 12:51 thank You for the privilege we've had to serve You 12:54 and to worship with You today 12:57 this week and in the future, Father. 12:59 We just wanna thank You 13:01 for being allowed to be part of Your work. 13:04 And to help others and to serve others, Father, 13:07 we wanna continue to proclaim the gospel. 13:09 And thank You for this text when come to You. 13:12 You're gonna give us physiologic changes 13:13 by giving us rest. 13:15 We wanna thank and praise Your name for everything 13:17 You do is our prayer. 13:20 Amen. 13:23 Well, thank you for joining us today. 13:25 And remember, 13:26 the key to health is in our worship. 13:31 As we come to God, as we give our hearts to Him, 13:33 as we allow Him into our lives each day, 13:36 He forgives us and He saves us 13:38 and this gives us the power to know 13:40 when to use modern medicine, 13:42 to make lifestyle changes 13:43 and also to know that we have hope today 13:46 and forever that we will be safe 13:48 and healed in Him. 13:49 I'm Dr. James Marcum wishing you the best of health. |
