00:03 - Welcome everyone. 00:05 We're excited to share some country wisdom with you. 00:07 - King Solomon had a thing or two to say 00:09 about the path to wisdom. 00:11 In Proverbs 4, he wrote, 00:13 "Let your eyes look directly forward 00:16 and your gaze be straight before you. 00:19 Keep straight the path of your feet 00:21 and all your ways will be sure." 00:23 - Join us now for Country Wisdom. 00:27 (soft guitar music) 00:31 (stately music) 00:59 Usually one of the good things, 01:00 when you're bowing in respect, 01:01 you never take your eyes off of the opponent though. 01:04 - It's been too long. 01:05 - Yeah. And you cheated, you didn't even wear your Gi. 01:09 - Well, the Gi is on the premises, 01:12 but I took one look at yours and went, 01:16 okay, mine doesn't have any of the little fancy things. 01:19 And there is no black on my Gi. 01:22 My little blue belt just shriveled and lost all confidence. 01:28 - How many years did you have? 01:30 - We're talking maybe two. 01:32 And then I broke my back and that kind of ended. 01:37 My skiing career ended there too. 01:39 - I've had a little more about maybe 20 years 01:41 or so where... - And it shows. 01:43 - But let's do just a little bit, 01:46 we'll kind of- 01:47 - Seeing what I remember. 01:49 - Wanna at least almost hit you today anyway 01:50 you know, after the week it's ready. 01:52 (laughing) 01:56 - So if I attacked you in a parking lot, 01:58 which is highly unlikely. 01:59 - Okay. 02:00 - If I came at you. 02:01 - Okay. So you're in here. 02:02 You're looking at what's set up now. 02:04 That's set up. 02:05 So we come in here. 02:06 Boom, boom, boom, boom. 02:08 There's lots of things for me. 02:09 - And at that point long before that, 02:11 I would say, I'm sorry, I surrender. 02:13 - I used to do... 02:14 Well, we taught Chuck Norris United Fighting Arts Federation 02:18 for some time 02:19 - had studio. - Yeah you're way 02:19 above my class. 02:20 - But then we went into Kung Fu San Soo. 02:23 And San Soo's totally different. 02:24 Throw me a left. 02:26 - My left hand. - Your other left. 02:27 Yeah. That's. 02:29 - My left hand is purely decorative, 02:30 but here it goes. 02:31 - So you come in here. 02:32 Boom, boom, boom. 02:33 You look at stuff, 02:35 that is kind of set up and open, 02:39 but the interesting thing is Martial Arts 02:44 is cool for defense and things, 02:46 but a lot of things begin going on in your mind 02:48 in Martial Arts too. 02:49 I know I was a Christian during that time. 02:53 - And you were obviously very into it. 02:55 I was doing it with my kids and thinking, 02:58 well, this is more fun than just working out 03:01 at the gym, you know. 03:02 And I was with them. I enjoyed it. 03:05 Like I said, I went all the way up to a blue belt, 03:09 but I was very proud of that 03:10 because I'm not much of an athlete. 03:12 And I loved the respect that they emphasize 03:18 I love the discipline that they emphasize. 03:21 I mean, I can't tell you how many times 03:23 our senseis were telling this group of mostly boys, 03:27 you know, you don't ever start anything. 03:30 This is so that you could defend yourself if someone 03:34 or defend someone weaker than you are. 03:36 And I liked those aspects. 03:38 - One of the things I noticed, 03:39 grab me by the lapels here, 03:40 you know, you for a woman, you've got a guy, 03:42 well, you're really doing that 03:44 with ferocity aren't you? (Janice laughing) 03:45 You've got a guy that grabs a woman, 03:47 you know, well, there are some things you can do, 03:49 and it's really good 03:50 to actually train those things nowadays, 03:52 the way things are. 03:53 But there's some simple things, 03:54 you know, you come in, it sets up the throat, right, 03:57 you know, into that area, lots of different things. 04:00 Those are good things. 04:01 But I think what we're talking about today 04:02 is kind of going past on, 04:06 there's kind of other levels of this. 04:07 - Well, anything can become an obsession, 04:10 even if it started out a good thing, 04:13 we're talking about 04:14 what we should be filling our minds with. 04:16 And frankly, I had two issues 04:21 and I suppose breaking my back, 04:23 which by the way, was not in Martial Arts class, 04:26 it was completely unrelated. 04:28 But I think in some ways, 04:31 perhaps it was a blessing that I did quit, 04:35 that when I quit, actually it wasn't long 04:37 before the kids quit as well. 04:39 Two things that kind of bothered me, 04:42 just niggled at the back of my brain. 04:44 One most of these Martial Arts 04:47 were developed with a certain philosophy 04:51 and there is so much Eastern mysticism, 04:53 which as a Christian, I stay away from. 04:57 And so much of that I began to wonder, 04:59 can you truly separate all of the philosophy 05:03 from the technique? 05:06 - I noticed that, especially in some, 05:09 what I was in we'd talk about the key force, 05:11 you know, it's like, it's that energy that proceeds 05:14 that comes before your actual hand or so 05:17 before an actual strike, 05:19 and having worked in a lot of the world, it's real. 05:24 There's things that are real and say, 05:25 "Well, how can that be? And how can that be?" 05:28 Well, because you're looking right in the very beginning, 05:31 you look at the Bible. 05:32 The actual instruction book on why we're here, 05:35 is Adam and Eve seeded all their power to Satan, 05:40 who was the light bearer. 05:41 He stood next to God, had tremendous power. 05:45 He came down here. He still has that power. 05:48 We're basically under his rulership as it were, 05:52 unless we choose to step out from under it. 05:55 And so within Martial Arts, 05:57 within everything virtually in his world, he's there. 06:02 And he has real power. 06:03 I was in some place in South America. 06:06 And one fellow told me that he was a devil worshiper. 06:09 He followed the devil. 06:11 And he decided he wanted to follow God. 06:13 And at one point he said, 06:14 other fellows were walking along with him 06:16 in this dark alley. 06:18 And all of a sudden he was lifted up, pinned against a wall, 06:21 about five feet off the ground. 06:23 This guy's over six foot, 06:24 200 pounds just pinned against the wall 06:27 and he couldn't move. 06:28 And the story goes on and we don't have time for that story 06:31 but this stuff is real. 06:33 I mean, people in our audience may go, whoa, 06:35 (Jim chuckles) 06:36 but it's real stuff. 06:38 - No. 06:39 And I think a lot of times Christians are playing around 06:41 with different concepts of energy. 06:45 - [Jim] Yeah. - [Janice] You know 06:47 and who doesn't want more energy, particularly at our age, 06:49 who wouldn't like to tap into something. 06:51 - [Jim] Speaking of the energy, let's go ahead 06:52 and sit down - [Janice] That's going 06:52 to give you more energy. 06:54 - [Jim] Yeah. 06:54 Have a seat. 06:58 - Getting down here on this mat, 07:00 the mat reminds me of another practice 07:02 that is very popular and that's yoga. 07:05 And I have purposely not gotten involved 07:09 even though I have friends who are fanatical. 07:13 - [Jim] Those forms of meditation thing, 07:14 you empty your mind and everything. 07:17 - [Janice] All right. And I think there's a danger there. 07:19 I think that's why you have to look 07:21 at the philosophy behind, whatever practice it is 07:25 you're getting involved in. 07:28 Emptying your mind, meditating. 07:30 It's so popular. 07:31 They're incorporating meditation classes into schools. 07:35 Middle schools, because they say it helps kids focus, 07:38 it helps calm them but what are we teaching them 07:42 when we're teaching them to empty their mind? 07:44 - You gotta ask if you've got an empty vessel, 07:48 in the universe, something's gonna come in it. 07:51 (Janice chuckles) 07:52 - Universe doesn't like vacuums, does it? 07:53 - Yeah. 07:55 - Jesus told a parable about exactly that. 07:57 And I think it's one that Christians 07:59 really need to pay attention to. 08:01 It was, a man had a house and it's filled with devils. 08:04 I think it said seven devils. 08:06 And he decides, I wanna be rid of those. 08:10 This is a good thing, getting rid of the evil. 08:13 So he absolutely cleans the house top to bottom, 08:16 sweeps it, not a speck of dust. 08:18 There is nothing at house. 08:21 So far so good, but he didn't take it far enough 08:24 because he didn't decide what he was going to fill it with 08:28 to replace the evil, to replace the bad practices. 08:32 He left it empty and it got refilled worse than before. 08:38 - Yeah. 08:39 - And I think there is a danger 08:40 if you are simply meditating. 08:44 Some of those practices can be good. 08:46 The Bible tells us to meditate, 08:47 but what does it tell us to meditate on? 08:50 It's not just emptying. 08:53 It's filling your mind with the word of God. 08:56 - [Jim] Yep. 08:57 - [Janice] Contemplating God. 08:58 - We've got to take the Spirit of God. 09:01 Invite the Spirit of God into our life. 09:03 That's the true meditation. 09:04 That's the true emptying of ourselves. 09:07 And then God will come in and fill us up 09:10 and give us the most joyous life. 09:17 - It's exciting that we serve a God 09:19 who sees the end of human history 09:22 from the very beginning. 09:24 This is a God who can be trusted with my life. 09:28 But how do you know that he can be trusted with your life? 09:31 Well, because he has demonstrated to us in the Bible 09:36 that he can see the future. 09:38 I believe you will find this pamphlet eye-opening, 09:42 go to talkingdonkeyinternational.org 09:45 and order offer 109, "Intelligent Faith." 09:50 Get your free copy today. 09:57 - So we're standing in front of a crystal shop 10:00 and you said it's not the only one in town, 10:03 that this town has. 10:04 how many? - Many, many, 10:05 I don't know how many 10:06 but a lot of 'em yeah. - You haven't counted really 10:07 like one on every corner. 10:09 - Not quite that many, 10:11 but it's probably as many as pot shops. 10:13 (both laughing) 10:14 - Now I love looking at crystals. 10:17 They're awfully pretty. 10:18 And I actually like, I'm not a rock hound. 10:21 I can barely tell one kind of rock from another, 10:26 but crystals are just so pretty to look at, 10:29 but that's not the real draw. 10:30 That is not why this town has so many crystal shops. 10:34 It's not just people going, "Ooh, pretty." 10:36 - It's true. 10:37 I mean, I've gotta say though, I love crystals too. 10:40 I mean, I love, 10:41 I always wanted to go to Mexico 10:43 where they found this monster cabin with crystals 10:46 that are hundreds of feet long. 10:47 - [Janice] Are you kidding? 10:49 - [Jim] Oh, no I'm not, just spectacular stuff. 10:50 Unfortunately it got so hot in the place. 10:53 It was, I don't know exactly the dynamics of it, 10:55 but they had to have suits 10:57 and everything to protect themselves. 10:58 And the government finally closed it all down. 11:00 - So you can't get there anymore? 11:02 - Only by special permit now but marvelous stuff. 11:05 And I like watching on YouTube where they find the crystals 11:08 and they dig for the crystals, 11:09 you know, in Colorado, in different places. 11:12 - Have you ever opened a geod? 11:14 - Well, I've had geodes I collected as a kid, 11:17 so I enjoyed that too, but you're right. 11:20 There's a different reason for these crystals 11:23 and the collection of them. 11:26 - Not long ago, one of a magazine I was looking through 11:29 had an article on gifts to get your mom for mother's day, 11:33 you know, suggestions. 11:35 And one of them was a really, really pretty water bottle. 11:39 And have you ever seen those wine bottles? 11:42 They have a big bubble in the bottom. 11:44 - Oh yeah. 11:45 - Well, this water bottle was glass 11:48 and it had a bubble in the bottom 11:50 and that bubble was filled 11:51 with lovely lavender crystals. 11:54 And of course I'm not enough of a rock counter 11:57 to remember what kind they were. 11:59 Amethyst? 12:00 Those are purple. - Yeah 12:01 - [Janice] Aren't they? Could have been. 12:03 And so I looked and thought, 12:04 "Ooh, that's really pretty." 12:06 But then I was reading about it 12:08 and it said that this water bottle 12:11 would infuse the water with the energy of crystals. 12:15 In fact, it said it promises to infuse the water 12:19 with the energy of crystals. 12:21 And I don't, trust promises, 12:23 I mean, ads, they're always trying to say, 12:26 "I guarantee it'll do this." 12:28 And my husband is of a scientific bent 12:31 being a surgeon. 12:33 And so I said, 12:34 "Hey, Steve, come and look at this." 12:36 And I said, 12:37 "So if you're promising the crystal energy, 12:41 you must have a way to prove it's really there." 12:45 You know, do you measure the energy of the water 12:47 before you put it in? 12:48 And then after it's been in contact 12:49 with the crystals for a while, 12:51 oh, now it registers higher on the energy meter. 12:54 And I know I sound like I'm mocking it, 12:56 but it's because of going, how do you promise 12:59 that it's infused with crystal energy? 13:01 I suppose that takes a different kind of faith 13:04 right there in the crystals themselves. 13:06 But I've read so much recently. 13:09 There was an interview with a woman who is, 13:13 she uses crystals for healing, 13:16 and she had this article on eight different crystals 13:20 and what they can do for you. 13:22 And each one had a different property to it, 13:25 whether it was for mental healing or physical healing 13:28 or energy or focus 13:30 or one that that helps with meditation. 13:34 And again, they're all pretty. 13:36 I have an acquaintance who has crystals 13:38 hanging all over her house and they really are decorative. 13:43 They're quite lovely to look at, 13:45 but that's not why she has them in her house. 13:48 - Janice, I would submit to you 13:49 that all this stuff is true to a certain extent 13:54 because of you read the Bible, 13:56 the Bible says, 13:57 there was someone that was so close to God. 14:00 He was the light bearer. 14:03 Right next to God. 14:04 And he decided that he was better than God. 14:07 He wanted to be like the most High God. 14:09 He wanted to take his place. 14:11 He wanted to ascend to the heavenly throne 14:15 and he has come down here 14:17 and he wants to build his kingdom 14:20 with all of these things. 14:22 Now, if you remember in the government, 14:22 the treasury department, 14:26 how do they study counterfeit money? 14:29 - I actually know this one. 14:32 I have my sister lives in DC and I've toured. 14:34 And I remember them say that, like, 14:36 if you go to work for the FBI or the treasury, 14:39 they don't show you counterfeits and say, 14:41 "Now look at this bill, 14:42 this one you see up in the corner. 14:44 Here's how we know it's fake." 14:46 You spend your whole time studying the real thing. 14:49 - Real thing. 14:50 - Because once you've spent enough time 14:51 studying the real thing, 14:53 you can look and spot a fake like that. 14:56 - So if you don't believe in the Bible, 14:57 you get in the Bible 14:59 and you begin studying about the real thing. 15:01 The Bible says, Jesus is the light, 15:04 not the devil, not Satan. 15:06 Jesus is the light. 15:07 You begin studying his pattern, his life. 15:10 And then you say, are the crystals the real thing? 15:13 Is that where my energy comes from? 15:15 Is that where- 15:16 - Is that where my healing comes from? 15:17 - Is that where my healing comes from? 15:18 Is that where all this happens? 15:19 And you gotta begin to look at it and say, 15:21 "No, it's really not. That's the fake. 15:24 That's not the real." 15:26 - Are crystals what we should be meditating on? 15:29 I think they become an idol 15:30 because you're looking for something 15:32 that you should be getting from the Lord. 15:34 - Yeah, yeah, exactly that. 15:37 "And this is the condemnation 15:38 that light is come into the world 15:41 and men love darkness rather than light." 15:44 What's this other side? 15:46 There's light and there's darkness. 15:47 Jesus said, "I am the light of the world, 15:51 I have come that men might have that light 15:53 and they might have a more abundantly." 15:55 - And David said, what was it 15:57 that was a light unto his path? 15:59 - Yeah. - The word of God. 16:01 - [Jim] The word of God. 16:02 - [Janice] Now this is where we should be turning 16:04 to meditate on this. 16:05 This is where we turn for healing. 16:07 This is where we turn our focus 16:10 because other things can be pretty, 16:13 but they're getting in the way, 16:14 they're actually getting between us and God. 16:17 They're not getting us closer to God. 16:19 - And they might appear to give healing. 16:21 They might appear at some point to lift us up, 16:24 to do these things. 16:25 - Steve had a patient. 16:27 I can't remember how many years ago, 16:29 but he had a patient who was looking for wisdom, 16:32 for enlightenment, and he found it in a way. 16:38 He actually thought, 16:39 well, if these crystals are giving me something, 16:42 they're enlightening me by looking at them 16:45 and meditating on them. 16:46 If I took them internally that I'd really absorb the energy. 16:51 - Oh no. 16:51 - And he got, as my husband says, 16:53 he got enlightened all right. 16:54 He found out that was a stupid thing to do 16:57 because he needed the help of a surgeon. 16:59 - He swallowed a crystal. 17:00 - He swallowed a crystal. 17:02 And he was looking for something 17:05 that crystal could never give him, but we're all searching. 17:09 It's that hole, that can only be filled by God. 17:13 And if you're filling it with substitutes, 17:15 with things that the enemy has misdirected you 17:19 and said, "Oh, you're looking for enlightenment? 17:21 Look here. 17:22 Or, oh, you're looking for healing? 17:24 Look what I have over here." 17:25 And they look good. It sounds good. 17:28 It might even make you at least temporarily feel good, 17:33 but it'll kill you in the end. 17:34 - Yeah, it's all here. 17:36 And Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life." 17:40 (Jim laughs) 17:41 - I'll carry that for a while. She does yoga. 20:00 All these things that she is certain 20:03 are keeping her focused spiritually. 20:06 But that focus isn't pointed at the right God. 20:11 You know, they feel warm and fuzzy. 20:14 You can feel like, oh yes, 20:16 I feel very well centered is the word she uses. 20:21 And I think that's what people are seeking. 20:23 But if you're seeking it in the wrong place, 20:25 you're gonna find the wrong thing. 20:28 - Yeah. It's true. 20:30 - You brought a toy? 20:32 - Well, really isn't, a toy, but it is. 20:35 Got it from Nepal and in Nepal, it's a prayer wheel. 20:39 - Oh. 20:41 - Now been in Nepal and they have this great big, 20:42 massive prayer wheels. 20:44 You walk around, you spin this prayer wheel, 20:46 each one successively in this monster circle. 20:49 - They're all like this only... 20:51 - Well, big. 20:52 I mean they're huge. 20:53 - Okay. 20:55 - And well, let me show you here inside. 20:59 Oh little wind coming up here. 21:04 I can't get it out, it would never come out. 21:05 Maybe not. 21:06 Anyway, there it is. 21:08 There's a whole prayer written 21:11 and you write your prayer down. 21:12 - Do you know what it says? 21:13 - Have not a clue on this one. 21:15 Didn't really care just wanted to- 21:17 - So the point though 21:18 is normally you would write your own prayer. 21:21 - Yeah, write your own prayer. 21:22 - And roll it up and stick it in there. 21:23 - Yep, yeah. 21:25 And you get it in and then you, for whatever reason, 21:28 the energy you spin this around 21:30 and then this helps it ascend someplace. 21:33 Not really sure where. 21:34 - How long do you spin? 21:37 - I don't know. 21:39 Guess as long as it takes to get it outta here 21:41 and out there. 21:43 It's also, you've seen the Tibetan prayer flags. 21:47 You know, those prayer flags 21:48 are supposed to send up the prayers. 21:50 And I'm not slighting anybody who's doing that, 21:53 you know, but I think it's what you said. 21:54 It's misdirection. 21:56 - They might honestly be seeking a connection 21:59 with their God, honestly, having a need, 22:03 wanting it to be fulfilled 22:05 and doing all that they know how to reach out 22:09 and somehow find heaven. 22:10 - Because we were created, you said it earlier, 22:12 we were created as spiritual beings. 22:15 We were created for a friendship 22:17 and a personal relationship with the God who created us. 22:20 - Which is why we all seem to have that draw. 22:23 That we want something spiritual. 22:27 We were talking about misdirection 22:29 the genuine, there's a verse here, 1 John 5:14. 22:35 "And this is the confidence that we have in him." 22:38 I love that confidence that we have, 22:40 "that if we ask anything, 22:42 according to his will, he hears us." 22:46 The 'according to his will' is a little bit 22:48 of the kicker there. 22:51 Because of course, if I am praying for something 22:54 that he knows, isn't gonna be good for me, 22:57 then he's not going to do that for me, 23:00 which is good. 23:01 You know, so sometimes when prayers 23:03 don't seem to be getting answered, 23:05 instead of getting frustrated or angry, 23:08 you might stop and think, 23:11 well, maybe God knows that's not ultimately 23:12 good for me after all. 23:14 He does know a little more than I do. 23:15 - Yeah. 23:16 - And things like this, 23:18 there are all kinds of ritualistic prayers 23:21 throughout history you'll find it. 23:24 Things that people have done 23:25 to get their prayer answered. 23:29 And some people repeat rote prayers over and over, 23:33 say a prayer this many times. 23:36 Imagine I have a relationship with my husband. 23:40 Imagine though, if every morning I got up and I said, 23:45 "Good morning, Steve, I love you. 23:47 Please be with me today." 23:49 And it was the same thing 23:51 every time - Over and over... 23:52 - Yeah. 23:54 I kept coming to him during the day, 23:55 saying basically the same prayer. 23:58 I know I've had friends who grew up. 24:00 It was the every night literally saying the, 24:03 Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep prayer 24:06 or some version of that 24:07 or at, when you sit down to a meal, it's the same thing, 24:11 a little rhyming kind of prayer. 24:15 How does that feel genuine? 24:17 How is that coming from a genuine place? 24:20 When you're just repeating certain words. 24:23 - Even Jesus, when the disciples came to him, 24:25 because they saw that his prayers were so different 24:28 than everybody's, "Lord teach us how to pray." 24:31 - Because they didn't know how to do it that way. 24:33 - Yeah. Yeah. 24:34 And he laid out a prayer, 24:35 but that prayer wasn't to just repeat 24:37 that thing over and over 24:38 to get some cosmic blessing. 24:40 - I love the Lord's prayer 24:41 who doesn't love the Lord's prayer? 24:43 But if that is your prayer, 24:44 you just reciting that, 24:47 it's still not coming from a genuine spot. 24:50 God wants to hear what you really have to say. 24:53 What you're really feeling. 24:55 And if you're not talking to him like a friend, 24:59 maybe you don't have the relationship yet 25:02 that you really, really want. 25:04 - But that's the relationship God wants. 25:06 - Right. 25:07 I can sit and talk with Steve about anything. 25:09 And he won't tell me, I don't have time for you, 25:12 or that's dumb. 25:13 (Janice Laughs) 25:14 You know, he might think it inside, 25:16 but he is wise enough not to ever say it. 25:18 And God, he might be listening 25:20 to the most childish thoughts coming out of us. 25:23 But he wants to talk to us to genuinely talk to us. 25:27 - I am so happy. 25:28 There are times when I've asked things of God, 25:30 I'm so happy he didn't answer. 25:32 (both laughing) 25:33 You know, he understands, 25:34 he sees the end from the beginning. 25:36 He knows exactly what would be perfect for us. 25:40 - Did you always say yes to your kids? 25:42 - No. 'Cause I knew what it would lead to. 25:44 Yeah. Good. 25:45 - And sometimes they're mad at you when you don't. 25:47 - Yeah. Yeah. 25:49 But yeah, it's so amazing with God 25:52 that he wants to do the very best thing for us. 25:56 And he says, 25:57 "I'll even do it ahead of time. 25:57 Before you call on me," 25:59 he says, 26:00 "I will answer." 26:01 That's a friendship. 26:02 That's a relation. 26:03 And it's the same way I trust my wife. 26:05 You trust your husband, 26:07 you know ahead of time and what they're gonna do 26:08 in a certain situation. 26:10 - There are times where, by the time he said, 26:12 "Janice, could you get me..." 26:13 I'm already up and I've got it, 26:15 "You mean this?" 26:16 - Yeah.
