00:04 to substitute for the advice of your healthcare provider, 00:07 and the producers of this series 00:09 assume no liability 00:10 for the use or misuse of the material presented. 00:21 Creation or evolution, 00:23 design or random chance, 00:27 they say it all began with a big bang, 00:31 but when we look at the amazing human body, 00:34 the answer is obvious. 00:36 The complexity of the design 00:37 exceeds anything man has ever made. 00:40 The body, it only have been designed 00:43 by the Master Designer we read about in the Bible. 00:48 Divine Design. 01:05 Welcome to another episode of Divine Design. 01:09 In our previous episodes 01:11 we took a close look at the miracle of childbirth 01:14 and yet still have not plumed 01:16 the depths of God's marvelous design 01:19 in the development of the human baby. 01:22 We have seen that only an all wise creator 01:25 could have made these things happen, 01:27 for it would be simply impossible 01:29 for evolutionary processes. 01:32 We have seen the importance and value of prenatal care 01:36 and steps to improve pregnancy and birth outcomes. 01:40 We have learned the mechanics of labor and delivery. 01:44 We also examined 01:45 many of the benefits of breastfeeding 01:48 and even warned about 01:49 some of the mystical new age practices 01:51 in childbirth that should be avoided. 01:55 Hartland College has embraced 01:57 the challenge of educating young ladies 01:59 in the field of childbirth 02:01 and to practice midwifery 02:03 according to the counsel given as in the Spirit of Prophecy. 02:07 In Medical Ministry, page 61 we read, 02:11 "Our institutions should be especially thorough 02:14 in giving to women a training 02:16 that will fit them to act as midwives." 02:20 Our goal is to train our young ladies God's way, 02:24 so that they may be used of the Lord as missionaries 02:27 in this exciting and challenging field. 02:31 Join us in this final episode 02:34 as Patti Barnes speaks with Debbie Beihl OB-GYN 02:38 in residency about this high God. 02:44 Romans 12 says, 02:46 "I beseech you therefore, 02:47 brethren, by the mercies of God, 02:49 that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, 02:52 holy and acceptable unto God, 02:55 which is your reasonable service." 02:58 Jesus said, "When you've done it to least of my brethren, 03:01 you've done it to me." 03:02 I have a special guest with me here today 03:05 that especially agrees with this. 03:08 Her name is Dr. Debbie Beihl 03:11 and she is a residence OB-GYN 03:16 physician practicing in Reading, Pennsylvania. 03:19 It's right. 03:20 And you also have some training at Loma Linda, 03:22 tell us about that? 03:23 So I graduated last year from Loma Linda medical school, 03:26 it's a privilege to be there. 03:27 Okay. 03:29 And what's your background? 03:32 So I went through a nursing school 03:34 at Southern Adventist University. 03:36 And really appreciate that a rich background 03:38 that nursing gives me in the medical field. 03:41 Okay, very good. 03:43 So where do you see goals and your future career? 03:49 So as a OB-GYN my passion really is helping people 03:52 make lifestyle changes during pregnancy 03:55 and continuing on to have those changes 03:57 after they give birth to raise that child up really 04:01 to be healthy and to know God. 04:03 And so my passion is both lifestyle change 04:05 during pregnancy 04:06 and helping people find power in that through God. 04:10 Yes, so do you have like a systematic step approach 04:15 or study guide, or how would you go by? 04:19 To help people make lifestyle changes 04:21 and really find God's power 04:23 to make those changes in their life 04:25 something's that have really been helpful for me 04:29 in doing that is first of all 04:31 being in relationship with the patients. 04:33 Yes. 04:34 Finding out where they are at in their walk with God, 04:37 where they are at in their healthy lifestyle choices, 04:39 and then really relying on the Holy Spirit 04:41 to guide in conversation and helping them 04:45 find strength in their family, in their support systems, 04:48 and most of all through God to make those changes. 04:51 Without Him it's impossible. 04:52 That's right. 04:53 So that's a really, 04:55 that's a best approach, isn't it? 04:56 It's right. 04:58 How would you say that your... 05:01 I know you're a sincere Seventh-day Adventist Christian 05:05 and how would you say 05:07 your faith will impact your future career? 05:09 So for me, 05:12 I believe Jesus is coming really soon. 05:14 And I believe that this is actually 05:15 part of the end time message that we have to give to people 05:19 to turn the hearts of fathers to their children 05:22 and children to their fathers. 05:23 And I think that prenatal care, 05:25 helping people have healthy lifestyle at that critical time 05:27 when many people are opened to change is really 05:30 interlock in that. 05:32 And just a couple of things that I found 05:34 because people often know what they need to do. 05:36 Yeah. 05:37 But they find it so difficult to actually make those changes. 05:40 I don't know if you've seen that in your experience. 05:41 Yeah, yeah. 05:43 People that need to stop smoking 05:45 but often people find that when they are pregnant 05:47 that they have strength to do that sort of change. 05:50 People that need to make changes in their diet 05:53 for the health of their baby. 05:54 And I found that over and over that 05:57 people need strength from outside themselves. 06:00 They need more powerful motivator than often 06:03 they find in their own lives. 06:05 And for me the most powerful motivator 06:07 I've seen over and over and over 06:09 in my patients lives is instead of being motivated by fear, 06:13 being motivated by love. 06:14 Yes. 06:16 And love for that child, 06:17 love for the child that 06:18 they are developing inside them, 06:20 love for their child once they give birth. 06:21 I had a lady that came into my office, 06:23 I'll call her Jo for this illustration. 06:25 And she, we had prayed together at the prior visit. 06:28 And she came in the next time and said, "You know, 06:31 out of love for my child and out of love for God 06:35 because of the strength we had in prayer, 06:37 I stopped smoking." 06:38 So I find that we... 06:40 When we find that love for others 06:42 then it gives people power for change. 06:44 Motivation. Yeah. 06:46 That's what you need. That's right. 06:47 Amen. Amen. 06:49 But I believe there's a more powerful motivator than 06:51 even love for your child in making change. 06:53 I believe that love for God 06:56 because of you knowing God's love for you is actually 06:59 even more powerful motivator for change. 07:01 Yes, and they need to know that. 07:02 They need to know that. 07:04 And they know that by the way we care for them. 07:07 And most of all by beholding God's love, you know, 07:11 you see that God gave up heaven for us, 07:14 He gave up the society of holy angels, 07:16 His father's presence. 07:18 And He came to a world that rejected Him, 07:21 didn't appreciate what He did 07:23 and took the death of a criminal basically, 07:25 and that's self sacrificing love 07:28 that by beholding we have that love developed in us. 07:33 And that's the sort of love that gives us power 07:36 to be able to stop smoking when we're pregnant. 07:38 To continue that change on after we deliver the baby, 07:41 to make change in our diet, 07:43 and by knowing that love personally 07:47 in relationship with God daily, 07:49 it gives us strength to make that change. 07:51 Yes, He does. 07:53 Could you expound on that a little bit about 07:56 turning the hearts of the fathers to the children? 07:59 Yeah, Patti, it's really interesting 08:01 in Malachi 4:5 and 6, it says, 08:03 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet 08:05 before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 08:08 And He shall turn the hearts of the fathers to the children 08:10 and the heart of the children to the fathers." 08:13 And I think it's really fascinating 08:14 because Elijah was the forerunner... 08:18 Yes. 08:19 Of Christ 08:21 and we see the work of John the Baptist. 08:22 He was doing that same work of preparing the way 08:25 and that's what we're called to do now, 08:27 to prepare the way for Christ to come the second time. 08:29 And we see that interlock on this is the work of turning. 08:32 Initially it says the hearts of the fathers to the children 08:35 and then it says the hearts of the children to the fathers. 08:37 I think the reason it puts the fathers first is that 08:41 they have a responsibility to God, 08:43 to turn the hearts of their children, 08:45 and one of the ways they can do that 08:46 is by the influence that they have prenatally, okay. 08:50 Yes. 08:51 And I think that's really critical 08:53 because it affects children. 08:54 It affects them mentally, spiritually, physically. 08:58 What happens during pregnancy? 09:00 It has long term affects on all those areas. 09:03 And I think it's really critical 09:05 and that's what makes me really excited 09:07 about the work of OB-GYN, midwifery, 09:10 Christian physicians in helping 09:13 family unit to be restored to what God has called it to be 09:17 and to help ultimately prepare the family for Jesus to come. 09:21 That is our goal. 09:23 That is our goal. 09:25 You know, what's interesting, Debbie, 09:26 is now we almost had our brother here. 09:30 He is a pediatric resident in Loma Linda University. 09:34 And his schedule got changed the last minute. 09:37 But fortunately we have Debbie with us 09:41 but I was interested, 09:43 you know, both of you went in to, 09:45 he went to pediatrics, 09:46 you went to OB, what were your thoughts so, 09:51 what drew you this way? 09:53 So we both have a similar passion for sharing Jesus 09:56 through the practice of medicine 09:57 because Christ was on earth, 09:59 He did a combination of preaching, teaching, 10:01 and healing. 10:02 And that's what He calls His followers to do. 10:04 So we have a special interest in the early years of life 10:08 when people are impressionable for God's kingdom 10:12 when they can develop habits of healthful life 10:14 and come to close relationship with God. 10:16 I think that OB-GYN transitioning 10:19 into pediatrics is a perfect combination for that. 10:23 So do you have goals to, may be working together? 10:26 Absolutely. 10:27 Okay, that would be perfect. 10:29 You know, we're fortunately here, 10:31 we were able to start a midwifery program 10:35 and we're praying, 10:37 hopefully in the future to have a birthing center here. 10:39 Wouldn't that be wonderful? Yeah. 10:41 Where the Spirit of Prophecy and it's Bible based, 10:45 what a outreach we can have? 10:47 Absolutely. 10:48 With the childbirth and evangelism. 10:50 And I'm hoping, you know, 10:52 Lord willing we'll have a professional team here 10:54 like yourself and your brother. 10:56 And what are your thoughts on this? 10:58 I think it's exciting to see what the Lord can do 11:01 through the influence of Christian midwives, 11:05 Christian healthcare providers... 11:06 Yes. 11:08 And I'm excited to see what God's going to do. 11:09 What a strong, what a strong force it would be 11:11 for the Lord's work. 11:13 You know, although we've been talking that, Pattie. 11:14 It just reminds me of a verse in 1 John 4, 11:18 it says, "Beloved, let us love one another 11:21 for love is of God and everyone 11:22 that loveth is born of God and knows God." 11:25 And then over in Chapter 5:4, 11:28 "For whosoever is born of God overcometh the world 11:31 and this is the victory that overcometh the world, 11:34 even our faith." 11:35 And it just reminds me 11:36 everything we've been talking about 11:38 how as Christian physicians and midwives, 11:40 we can refill God's love. 11:41 How that love can become a powerful motivator 11:44 for change in the life of our patients? 11:46 How they can have that victory through faith, 11:49 to deny themselves to doing what's right for their babies, 11:53 so they can have a close relationship with God 11:55 so that child can have that experience. 11:56 Amen. 11:58 I'm really excited what God's gonna do. 11:59 Yes, I'm too. 12:01 I just can't wait to see 12:02 what doors He's gonna open next. 12:04 Absolutely. 12:05 I just had a quote I thought was really cool to share. 12:08 It says, "The mother who is a fit teacher 12:10 for her children must, before their birth, 12:13 form habits of self-denial and self-control, 12:16 for she transmits to them her own qualities, 12:19 her own strong or weak traits of character. 12:22 The enemy of souls understands this matter 12:26 much better than do many parents. 12:28 He will bring temptation upon the mother, 12:30 knowing that if she does not resist him, 12:33 he can through her affect her child. 12:36 The mother's only hope is in God. 12:40 She may flee to Him for grace and strength. 12:43 She will not seek help in vain. 12:47 He will enable her to transmit to her offspring qualities 12:51 that will help them to gain success in this life 12:55 and to win eternal life." 12:57 It's Mind, Character, and Personality, 12:59 page 124... 13:00 That is a wonderful quote. 13:01 I think it just reminds me of the power 13:03 that as Christian midwives and physicians 13:06 that we can have to help our mothers 13:09 find that hope in God and that power for change... 13:11 Amen. 13:13 And to bring eternal life 13:14 to their children both during... 13:16 What a responsibility? 13:18 Absolutely, absolutely. 13:20 Well, we have been blessed so much 13:23 with our visitor here today. 13:25 And I hope you have as well. 13:28 I just ask for your prayers for our future. 13:32 I know God hasn't brought us this far to leave us 13:34 and I believe He's gonna finish a good work. 13:37 So I'm asking please pray 13:39 as we continue our building project 13:43 for our future birthing center. 13:45 And I really thank you for being here today. |
