It was Tsar. 09:31 He bowed down. 09:32 Sir, he didn't know whether to bow or salute. 09:37 And the Tsar said, "What are you doing?" 09:40 I'm guarding. 09:42 Yes? What are you guarding? 09:46 Ah, I don't know. Why are you here? 09:50 Because I was told to come here 09:52 and guard here. 09:55 Go and get a sergeant. 09:57 So the sergeant came. 09:59 Oh, your majesty. 10:02 He said, "What is this soldier doing here?" 10:05 Ah, he's guarding. 10:09 What? 10:11 I don't know. 10:13 They're always here. 10:17 Why? 10:19 Go and get the book, 10:20 the official book and so they opened the book. 10:23 And for 100 years, 10:26 they didn't know what they were guarding. 10:29 It turned out that his great, 10:32 great, great grandmother 10:36 was an Empress, Catherine. 10:40 And she had a visitor one day 10:41 who brought her a beautiful rosebush. 10:44 She loved it. She had it planted. 10:47 She said, I don't want it stolen. 10:50 Get a guard and you will guard that rose bush 10:53 not 10 hours a day, not 12 hours a day, 10:56 24 hours a day guard my rosebush. 10:59 You know, she died. 11:03 The bush died. 11:05 But they kept on guarding 11:07 where the rose used to be 11:09 for 100 years. 11:11 What a waste of time. 11:14 And, you know, 11:16 we'll be studying about Jerusalem. 11:19 In Jerusalem they forgot how to worship God. 11:24 And they just worshiped him the same way 11:27 and they didn't know why. 11:29 You know, I went to Jerusalem 11:32 and I saw some people walking quickly to church 11:35 and walking slowly back 11:37 and I say, why do you walk quickly there 11:39 and slowly back? 11:41 Don't know. That's the way we always do it. 11:45 I saw they're walking fast to church, slowly from church. 11:49 And, you know, they only worshiped 11:51 because that was the way they had always done it. 11:55 Just like the king. 11:57 The Emperor, the Tsar Nicholas, 12:00 the guard didn't know what he was guarding 12:02 and the people in Jerusalem didn't know 12:05 who and why they were worshiping. 12:08 And that is why Jesus came there. 12:11 So he could teach them that He was the true God. 12:14 Never forget the story of Tsar Nicholas, 12:18 the rosebush and the guard. 12:21 It's time for our Bible study. 12:23 I hope you'll join in 12:24 and look up the text in your Bible 12:26 as we read together. 12:28 Jeremiah, would you please ask God 12:30 to be with us as we read the Bible? 12:34 Dear, Father, thank You for our Bibles. 12:36 Please send Your Holy Spirit to help us 12:39 understand the things we read, 12:40 in Jesus' name, amen. 12:43 Amen. Thank you, Jeremiah. 12:45 We've come a long way 12:47 since King Solomon's famous reign over Israel. 12:51 There were good kings and bad kings 12:54 in the generations of rulers who followed him. 12:57 God sent many prophets 12:59 like Isaiah and Jeremiah to warn His people 13:02 to turn from their wicked practices, 13:05 but they continue to rebel. 13:07 Finally, God had no choice 13:09 but to let them go into captivity. 13:11 So they would learn that doing things God's way 13:14 was the best. 13:15 Today's lesson 13:16 starts with the fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophecy 13:19 that Israel would go into captivity for 70 years. 13:23 Open your Bibles to the first chapter 13:25 in the Book of Daniel. 13:27 In verse 1, we read that Nebuchadnezzar, 13:30 King of Babylon captured Jerusalem 13:32 during the rule of King Jehoiakim. 13:35 Nebuchadnezzar took the king and many of the people 13:39 and marched them back to Babylon. 13:41 Several weeks walk away. 13:44 Aunty Leah, could you please point to the map 13:47 and show us where Babylon is? 13:51 You see that path that they took. 13:55 That's how long it took them to get from Jerusalem 13:59 to Babylon. 14:00 That's pretty amazing, isn't it? 14:03 Nebuchadnezzar took something else too. 14:06 Bethany, could you please read the second part 14:09 of Daniel 1:2? 14:13 "Some of the articles of the house of God, 14:15 which he carried into the land of Shinar 14:17 to the house of his God." 14:20 Okay. 14:21 "And he brought the articles 14:23 into the treasure house of his God." 14:25 Now keep in mind that many golden objects 14:28 were taken from God's sanctuary. 14:30 We'll learn more about these in a few weeks time. 14:34 Nebuchadnezzar had a special plan 14:37 for some of the most intelligent 14:38 and the best looking Israelites 14:40 once he got them to Babylon. 14:43 Caleb, can you please read verse 4 for us? 14:47 "Young men in whom there was no blemish, 14:50 but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, 14:52 possessing knowledge and quick to understand, 14:56 who had ability to serve in the king's palace, 14:59 and whom they might teach the language and literature 15:03 of the Chaldeans." 15:05 Nebuchadnezzar wanted the brightest people 15:08 to work for him. 15:09 Who wouldn't? 15:11 He hoped that by bringing them to his palace, 15:14 by giving them pagan names and teaching them 15:17 all about Babylonian religion and culture, 15:20 they would forget their God of their heritage 15:23 and follow heathen Babylonian customs. 15:26 Among these specially chosen men 15:28 from the royal household and nobles 15:30 were four teenage youth, 15:32 Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 15:36 King Nebuchadnezzar gave them new pagan names. 15:39 In verse 7 we read that Daniel's name 15:41 was changed to Belteshazzar, 15:43 Hananiah's name became Shadrach, 15:45 Mishael was changed to Meshach 15:47 and Azariah's name was changed to Abednego. 15:51 In verse 5, 15:52 we discover that King Nebuchadnezzar thought 15:56 he was doing these young Israelites a favor. 15:59 Bryce, would you please read verse 5 for us? 16:04 "And the king appointed for them 16:06 a daily provision of the king's delicacies 16:09 and of the wine which he drank, 16:10 and three years of training for them, 16:12 so that at the end of that time 16:13 they might serve before the king." 16:16 Now you might be tempted to think. 16:19 Wow! 16:20 Party food every single day 16:24 but remember, 16:25 the king's delicacies included rich desserts, 16:28 unclean meats, like pig, or pork meat, 16:32 food offered to idols, and alcoholic wine. 16:36 Now we talked about unclean foods 16:38 in the Book of Leviticus 16:39 and how God did not want these foods 16:41 to be eaten. 16:43 These items would fuzzy their thinking, 16:45 impair their capacity to learn, 16:48 lower their resistance to evil, 16:50 and lead them into sin. 16:52 Daniel and his three friends 16:53 had been faithfully trying to follow God's laws 16:56 as young children. 16:57 Now they face the biggest test of their lives. 17:01 If they rejected the king's provisions, 17:03 he could be insulted and they could be put to death. 17:06 If they went along with the king's plan, 17:09 they could become 17:10 very important people in Babylon 17:12 and live a much more comfortable life 17:14 than most of the other captives. 17:17 How are they going to deal with this temptation? 17:21 Chemiah, I think you can find the verse, 17:24 the answer to that in verse 8. 17:26 Can you please read that for us? 17:29 "But Daniel purposed in his heart 17:31 that he would not defile himself 17:33 with the portion of the king's delicacies, 17:36 nor with the wine which he drank, 17:39 therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs 17:43 that he might not defile himself." 17:46 Hmm. Thank you. 17:47 Now Ashpenaz, 17:49 the chief of the eunuchs like Daniel, 17:52 but he also feared the king. 17:55 Jeremiah, can you please read verse 10? 18:00 "And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, 'I fear my lord 18:04 the king, who has appointed your food and drink. 18:07 For why should he see 18:08 your faces looking worse than the young men 18:11 who are your age? 18:13 Then you would endanger my head 18:16 before the king.'" 18:17 Hmm. 18:18 Healthy living Daniel style 18:20 was a completely new concept to the Babylonians. 18:24 They had no knowledge 18:25 of God's laws in relation to health. 18:28 What a wonderful opportunity for Daniel and his friends 18:31 to educate the Babylonians 18:32 about the many blessings of God's health message. 18:35 Daniel's behavior had been kind and respectful. 18:39 And he cooperated wherever he could. 18:42 So Melzar, the man who Ashpenaz had appointed 18:45 to look after the day to day welfare 18:48 of the four young Hebrews 18:50 took Daniel's request seriously. 18:52 Sai, could you please read 18:54 about this in verses 12 and 13? 19:00 "Please test your servants for ten days, 19:04 and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. 19:08 Then let our appearance be examined before you, 19:12 and the appearance of the young men 19:14 who eat the portion of the king's delicacies, 19:18 and you see fit, so deal with your servants." 19:22 Now Melzar was reluctant, 19:26 but he agreed to give them just 10 days 19:29 to prove their claim. 19:30 He was worried 19:32 that they might get week or skinny and sick. 19:35 Well, of course, 19:36 'cause they weren't used to this health message, right? 19:39 Do you think 10 days 19:41 is enough time to make a noticeable difference? 19:44 What do you think? No! 19:47 Yeah, yeah, may be. Let's find out. 19:49 Aunty Leah, can you please read this in verse 15? 19:53 "And at the end of ten days their features appeared better 19:56 and fatter in flesh than all the young men 19:59 who ate the portion of the king's delicacies." 20:03 Wow. Can you imagine that? 20:05 Ten days that made a big difference, didn't it? 20:09 How did Melzar react in verse 16? 20:12 Bethany, can you please read that for us? 20:16 "Thus the steward took away their portion of delicacies 20:19 and the wine that they were to drink, 20:21 and gave them vegetables." 20:23 Wow, what a huge victory 20:25 and witness for God's formula for healthy living. 20:29 Right in the center of influence 20:32 over the whole nation of Babylon, 20:34 God honored the stand for truth 20:37 of the four young men in a special way. 20:39 Caleb, could you please read verse 17? 20:42 Sure. 20:44 "As for these four young men, 20:46 God gave them knowledge and skill 20:47 in all literature and wisdom, 20:50 and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams." 20:54 Wow, that's incredible. 20:55 Now let's have a look at our torchlight, 20:58 Mrs. White shines some additional light on this 21:01 in her book 21:02 Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 155. 21:06 Bryce, could you please read that? 21:13 "Indulgence of the appetite would have involved 21:16 the sacrifice of physical vigor, 21:18 clearness of intellect, and spiritual power. 21:21 One wrong step would probably have led to others, 21:24 until, their connection with heaven being severed, 21:26 they would have been swept away by temptation." 21:30 Isn't that incredible? 21:31 So all four men were blessed 21:33 because of their faithful obedience to God. 21:37 Even down to eating only the best foods 21:39 for the physical health and mental sharpness. 21:43 Daniel was given a particular gift 21:45 to understand visions and dreams. 21:48 We will learn in the coming weeks 21:50 how important that gift proved to be. 21:52 And it gets even better. 21:54 After three years of study, they had a big exam. 21:57 You wouldn't want to get too many questions wrong 21:59 if you were being out tested by the king now, 22:01 would you? 22:02 He could order you, your head to be chopped off, 22:05 if he didn't like your test results. 22:07 And remember, they had to learn a new language 22:09 during this study time as well just to be able to understand 22:13 the questions in the language of the Babylonians. 22:17 Verse 19 tells us 22:19 that when the king interviewed Daniel, 22:21 Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, at the end of the three years, 22:24 he was amazed at their knowledge. 22:27 Chemiah, could you please read that in verse 20? 22:32 "And in all matters of wisdom and understanding 22:35 about which the king examined them, 22:39 he found them ten times better 22:41 than all the magicians and astrologers 22:44 who were in all his realm." 22:46 Wow. Ten times? 22:49 God honored Daniel and his friends 22:51 because they studied it diligently 22:54 and were obedient to God's laws, 22:56 including God's health laws. 22:58 As we read our memory verse together, 23:00 let's remember, 23:02 that all God's commands are promises. 23:04 He will give us the power to obey. 23:07 Turn in your Bibles to 1 Corinthians 10:31 23:11 in the New Testament. 23:13 Now some of us 23:14 will have learned this verse already. 23:16 Now let's say it together, ready? 23:19 "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, 23:22 or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 23:28 Claim this promise. 23:30 Follow this command 23:31 and see how God will bless you in your body 23:34 and your mind. 23:35 We hope you enjoyed that Bible study 23:37 as much as we did. 23:38 If you want to study more about today's topic, 23:40 check out our devotionals. 23:42 Matthew and Caleigh will tell you how. 23:48 What do you want? Are you bored? 23:51 Yes. Look what I got. 23:56 Whoa! 23:58 Look at that! Cool. 24:00 Where did you get this? 24:02 adaywiththeking.com. 24:06 Thanks, Matthew and Caleigh. 24:08 Uncle Daniel, what are we going to learn about next week? 24:12 Well, next week we are going to discover why Daniel, 24:16 his three friends and all the king's wise men 24:18 were given the death sentence 24:20 and how God delivered them out of this awful situation. 24:24 That will be exciting. 24:25 Aunty Leah, can we practice our memory verse again? 24:28 Yes. 24:30 And why don't you say it along with us? 24:31 The words are on your screen. 24:34 "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, 24:37 or whatever you do, 24:39 do all to the glory of God." 24:42 1 Corinthians 10:31. 24:46 That's a verse worth remembering 24:47 at the beginning of every day. 24:49 Bailey, what did you learn about the King today? 24:52 Yeah, well, whether we ate or drunk will affect my mind 24:55 for good or bad. 24:56 That's so true. 24:58 And I'm so glad that God has given us 25:00 so many healthy, yummy options to choose from. 25:03 Well, that brings our worship time to a close. 25:07 We're going to finish with our blessing song. 25:09 You can sing along with us. 25:16 May God bless you and keep you 25:22 And fill your heart with love 25:27 May God guide and protect you 25:32 And watch you from above 25:37 And Sabbath after Sabbath 25:42 We greet the day of rest 25:47 The day the King of glory 25:53 Has sanctified and blessed 25:58 Goodbye, my friend 26:00 Till we meet again 26:03 For another day with the King 26:08 Goodbye! Happy Sabbath! 26:20 I know Jesus loves me because He's blessed me 26:23 with amazing family and friends. 26:29 I know Jesus loves me 26:31 because He keeps me safe from day to day. 26:39 I know Jesus loves me because He gave me animals. |
