So, this is our first Sabbath back in this newly 18:32 renovated space, and so we got to have a very special kind of 18:35 children's story. 18:36 We got to have one of the greatest children's story in the history of the world. 18:41 Let's do the children's story of David and... >> Goliath. 18:46 >> ...Goliath, the giant. In fact, you already know the story, so let's sing the story 18:53 together, shall we? >> I know it! >> You know it already? 18:55 >> I know the book by myself. >> Yeah. You can tell that story by yourself. 18:59 Well, you'll be able to -- [ Laughter ] What you can do right now is you 19:03 can sing the story with me. Let's sing it. We love David. Hey, but what about that -- What was the name of that giant? 20:08 What was the name of the giant? >> Goliath. >> Have you ever seen a giant? 20:12 >> No. >> Wouldn't it be something if we could invite Goliath to come 20:17 to church today on this very special Sabbath? Let's invite him. 20:20 Let's just see. Let's just see if Goliath comes through that door. 20:23 We need to see. We got to see Goliath. Oh, wait a minute! 20:27 That's the wrong door! We got to look over here! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh! 20:32 [ Laughing ] Here comes -- Here comes Goliath. Oh, everybody, sit down, 20:38 sit down, sit down. You don't want to make him mad. You don't want to make him mad. 20:43 Sit down. Ohh. Have you ever seen a real giant 20:52 before? >> That's not a real giant. >> What do you mean it's not? 20:55 [ Laughter ] Have you ever seen anybody this tall? 21:04 >> He's not tall. >> Well, Mr. Goliath, you are a sight for sore eyes. 21:10 Look at this. He reminds me of Pastor Ben, but he can't be because look how 21:14 tall he is, and Pastor Ben is not that tall. Oh, Mr. Goliath. 21:19 I have a few questions for Mr. Goliath. Shh. I have a -- 21:22 Shh. I have a few questions for our giant visitor today. Uh, Mr. Goliath, you seem tall, 21:29 but are you? How tall are you? >> Well, it's actually a little 21:32 bit difficult to say because those measuring things don't fit. 21:36 >> The what? >> Yeah. So, 10 to 11 feet. >> 10 to 11 feet? 21:42 Anybody here 10 to 11 feet? >> No. >> Nope. Nope. 21:45 About three of you. Three of you. Mr. Goliath, I-I-I'm even 21:50 embarrassed to ask you how much you weigh. But I want to know. 21:55 Whoa. This -- This is your chest armor. How much does that weigh? 22:00 >> It is remarkably heavy -- 125 pounds. >> 125 pounds?! 22:05 Anybody here weigh 125? Take three of you wrapped around his chest. 22:10 Oh, my. Oh. I see -- Uh-oh. I see Mr. Goliath brought his 22:17 spear. Let's ask him about his spear. Mr. Goliath, I see that on the 22:21 tip of your spear, you have this huge... iron... 22:26 head. How much does that iron head weigh? 22:30 >> Actually, the safety committee asked me to take it off for second service... 22:33 >> Ohh. Well, that's why it's not there. >> ...because it weighs the 22:36 amount of a small child... >> Ohh! >> ...15 pounds. 22:40 >> 15 pounds? And that's just on the top of his spear. 22:47 Ohh. [ Laughing ] Mr. Goliath, you are such a great man. 22:52 Did you think Goliath was somebody to be afraid of? >> Yes. 22:55 >> Come on! Look at this! Do I look afraid? >> No. 22:59 >> Do you know why I'm not afraid? Because the truth about Goliath 23:03 is that if you're a little girl, if you're a little boy and you have a giant in your life -- 23:11 Oh, you say, "Pastor Dwight, I do not have a giant in my life." Oh, I'm sorry, but you do, 23:15 because when you take something that doesn't belong to you and you take it home and put it in 23:19 your bedroom, that's the giant of stealing. And when you say something that 23:23 you know is not true and it's a lie, that's the giant of lies. And if you mouth off to your 23:30 mother or father and talk back, that's the giant of sassing. Ooh. 23:36 You haven't heard about sassing, have you? You will. 23:41 Everybody has a giant, but here's the good news about Mr. Goliath being here for us. 23:45 It's to remind us that even if you're a little boy or a little girl, in the name of the 23:51 Son of David, you can conquer every giant in your life. What do you say to that? 23:57 [ Laughs ] Oh, Mr. Goliath, thank you so much for coming. 24:01 I tell you what. Let's just do that stone thing and see how he falls. 24:05 You want to do that thing? [ Laughter ] Huh? 24:08 No? Okay. [ Laughter ] Mr. Goliath! 24:12 Alright. There he goes, boys and girls. [ Applause ] 24:20 Who would like to thank Jesus, the Son of David -- Hey, shh. 24:25 Who would like to thank Jesus, the Son of David, for being the one who can conquer every giant 24:30 we have? Is there anybody that wants to have the prayer this first time 24:34 around? You come here, sis. What's your name? 24:36 >> My name's Zawadi. >> Zawadi? Zawadi, it's so nice to have you. 24:41 We're going to close our eyes and fold our hands. Zawadi's going to thank Jesus 24:45 for being our giant-killer. >> Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for this day. 24:52 Thank You for saving us and dying on the cross for us. [ Applause ] 28:21 >> I'm standing beneath a sign, a banner, high overhead. One word on it -- 28:27 "BreakThrough." A whole lot of signatures covering that banner. 28:32 The ones in red belong to faculty and staff and teachers. The ones with the multiple 28:40 colors are the young -- 28:42 our new students, our return students, last night who were in 28:46 this place. You want a breakthrough in your 28:51 life? Say, "What kind of a 28:53 breakthrough are you talking about?" 28:55 How 'bout a breakthrough financially? 28:59 How 'bout a breakthrough socially? 29:01 Just a new breakthrough. How 'bout a breakthrough 29:04 emotionally? How 'bout a breakthrough 29:08 spiritually? In the few minutes you and I 29:12 have beneath this banner, let's talk about that breakthrough. 29:17 God knows there's not a soul here not ready for that breakthrough. 29:25 Let's pray. Oh, God... that's what we need. That's what we want -- 29:32 that breakthrough. Give it to us, please. In the name of the Son of David, 29:39 amen. Let me teach you a one-line prayer. 29:42 You want a breakthrough prayer? It's a one-line prayer. I'll put it on the screen. 29:46 Memorize it, please. Pray it often. "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy 29:53 on me!" Let's try that one on -- Let's try the line on for size, 29:57 okay? Let's do it out loud together. >> "Jesus, Son of David, have 30:01 mercy on me!" >> Let's try it again. Come on. >> "Jesus, Son of David, have 30:06 mercy on me!" >> You want to slay your giant? What's that title that we're on 30:11 for this little breakthrough moment? 30:13 Put the title of the slide up, please -- "BreakThrough: How to 30:15 Slay Your Giant." Memorize that prayer. 30:19 Memorize that prayer and take the following three actions, 30:23 alright? 30:24 Action number 1 -- you have got to admit that it must have been a comical scene -- we're talking 30:31 about big King Saul with little only a boy named David trying on that royal armor. 30:40 I want you to notice Saul's response. Open your Bible to the story, 30:45 one of the greatest stories in sacred literature, David and Goliath, 1 Samuel 17. 30:50 Open your Bible to 1 Samuel 17. Let's go. What does Saul say to that 30:55 little shepherd boy? Drop down to verse 33. I'll be in the 30:59 New International Version. 31:15 "You, my boy, against that big giant? You got to be crazy!" 31:20 Let me tell you something about people like Saul. They're in all of our lives. 31:24 Whenever we face our giants, well-meaning people that we know very well have tried to whittle 31:31 us down to size. It could be the voice of a parent you're hearing right now. 31:35 Some of us hear our mother's voice. Some of us hear our father's 31:38 voice. It could be the voice of a teacher you heard once upon a 31:40 time and that voice has never left you. Could be the voice of a sibling, 31:44 a voice of a friend, an employer, somebody significant in your 31:49 life that has whittled you down to size. [ Scoffs ] 31:55 "You're not spiritual enough. Look at you. [ Chuckles ] 31:58 You're not bright enough. You're not good enough. You're not rich enough. 32:05 You can't." Why is it that when we're getting ready to face the giant 32:11 of our lives, those voices pop up in our minds and begin to taunt us? 32:15 "You can't! You can't! You're too -- You're too puny. Look at you." 32:21 [ Scoffs ] Fact of the matter is every one of us in this space right now is 32:31 facing a giant. Some of you have faced this giant since you were a child. 32:36 This giant has never left you or forsaken you, and it isn't the Lord Jesus, either. 32:41 This giant has learned every DNA of your mind and being. This giant knows every button to 32:48 push. Oh, mercy. Do we need a breakthrough? 32:54 Please! It's amazing the levels of shame and sophisticated taunting and 33:02 belittlement that take place in our families, our schools, even workplaces. 33:06 It just is so sad today. But I'm going to tell you a little secret about people who 33:11 try to shame others. I don't care where they are. They may be in the lowest office 33:14 in the land or the highest. It doesn't matter. If you try to shame somebody, 33:18 what you're telling everybody around you is that you have something you're ashamed of 33:22 yourself. That's why we cut people off at the legs. 33:26 We don't want them to go any higher than we are. The giants are everywhere, 33:32 folks. Saul says to David, "My man, you are never going to make it!" 33:38 But you know what? Saul's hiding a little secret that we all now know, because 33:41 you know what the Bible says about Saul? He was a head taller than every 33:46 other man in Israel. So when Goliath the giant comes out, bellowing, "Send me your 33:52 biggest warrior, send me your tallest man," everybody knows it's supposed to be the king. 33:58 He's a head taller! But wimpy Saul -- I want to tell you something. 34:05 Leaders who wimp out, leaders who succumb to fear, infuse the entire organization, because 34:12 everybody takes their cue from the leader. Watch what happens here. 34:16 Come on. This is, uh -- This is verse -- What is this, verse 11? 34:20 In 1 Samuel 17:11, there it is. 34:30 Now, they're not only dismayed and terrified, they respond physically. 34:34 Drop down to verse 24. "Whenever the Israelites saw" this belligerent giant, "they 34:41 all fled from him" in what? >> "Great fear." >> "In great fear," and that 34:46 includes Saul himself. So when he shames David, he's hiding his own shame. 34:53 Always works that way. You can count on it. Ahh. 34:59 Should be Saul strapping on this armor and saying, "Okay, I'm going out. 35:02 That does it." No, no. He straps it on David, and it was comical. 35:06 It had to be. David is walking in the tallest man's armor in Israel, thumping 35:10 around that tent, and, finally, David says, "Time-out! Enough is enough!" 35:15 Put the words on the screen. David says, "Look, guys." 35:23 And there it is -- jot it down in your mind -- action step number 1. 35:28 You must fight -- fight -- in your own armor. You know why? 35:36 Because you are a unique creation. In fact, I'll just tell you a 35:39 little secret. When you got born, God took the DNA blueprint. 35:45 [ Imitates paper tearing ] [ Pops lips ] "I already have one. 35:48 Why would I ever make a second one?" You are absolutely unique. 35:53 You were designed. God needed you on this planet. Don't wimp out on Him now. 35:58 He planned for you to be here. And guess what -- He made you. He created you to be a winner. 36:05 Oh, I love these words from Anthony DeStefano. This is great. 36:09 Put it on the screen for us all, please. 36:38 Congratulations! You got the luck of the draw! A half a billion are gone 36:44 because you came. Wow. As he goes on, "From a strictly statistical point of 36:50 view, your presence on this planet is a miracle... No matter what you may think of 36:55 yourself right now" -- and some of you have some dark thoughts about yourself because this week 36:59 is already feeling bad and I haven't even started yet -- 37:02 "No matter what you may think of yourself right now, you are 37:05 already an 'overachiever' of the highest caliber." 37:08 And then I love this. "You came into this world a 37:11 champion." 37:12 I'm telling you what, ladies and gentlemen -- you were designed to win. 37:18 And you and the Son of David can lick any giant in your life. >> Yes. 37:25 >> Come on. I like the way the words of the angel of the Lord to another 37:30 wimpy fighter who was scared to death -- This is the angel to Gideon on 37:34 the screen. I love what the angel says to him. 37:36 "Yo, Gideon! Go in the strength you have. You've got all the armor you 37:42 need. You don't need her armor. You don't need his armor. 37:45 You use your armor. Go in the strength you have. Fight in your own armor." 37:51 >> Come on. >> "Come on" is right. Action step number 1 -- fight in 37:56 your own armor. Action step number 2 -- run toward your giant. 38:03 Your own giant. I read an interview a few days ago. 38:06 Henry Winkler -- Hey, do you remember "Happy Days," the Fonz? 38:10 That's Henry Winkler. I learned something about him I never knew. 38:14 He was born dyslexic. That means he would look at a page with words on it and the 38:18 words would just kind of move around and he could not make any sense. 38:21 He told the interviewer, and I quote, "I kept telling myself, 'I can't do that. I'm stupid.'" 38:29 How many times have you breathed that -- "What a stupid guy I am"? 38:34 It's the giant taunting through you to yourself. And when a giant keeps taunting 38:42 that over and over into your mind, you quickly become a believer in the taunts. 38:46 Now, a woman named Lynn Oliver got ahold of him, became his friend. 38:51 She tells the interviewer, by the way, and I'm quoting her now, "The feeling of being 38:54 inadequate, the feeling of being a bad student, of not succeeding academically never left him." 38:59 And yet through her friendship, she was able to help Henry Winkler take down the 39:03 giant of dyslexia and despair -- brought it down -- to the place he wins an Emmy Award -- that's 39:09 television -- for his acting. He couldn't read the scripts. He had to memorize them... 39:15 to which he now has become a world-famous author of children's stories. 39:21 He's written 29 books so far. They star a little kid who has dyslexia, wouldn't you know? 39:28 And the kid's name is Hank Zipzer. And kids all over the planet 39:34 know Hank Zipzer. There is a story of a man who saw this giant, and he said, 39:41 "I'm not settling for that intimidating paralysis." You got to run towards your 39:47 giant, not from it. That's what David did. Listen, I don't know what giant 39:51 you're facing right now. I know that everybody here has a giant. 39:56 Some of you are thinking about your giant even as I speak. It might be a moral giant or an 40:01 immoral -- pardon me -- an immoral giant. It could be the giant of 40:07 finances or the lack of finances. It could be the giant of fear. 40:11 It could be the giant of failure. It could be the giant of 40:13 discrimination. It could be the giant of a raging temper. 40:18 Listen, our mutual enemy has a thousand masks through which he masquerades as the giant of 40:25 choice for you and me. He switches masks as fast as that, taunting, taunting. 40:33 So we live with that giant. We live with that giant and his intimidation, his bellicose 40:41 taunting, seeking to paralyze us through stinky, dark thinking. How's it work? 40:50 I'll show you how it works. 1 Peter 5:8. Where does this stinky, dark 40:56 thinking come from? Put it on the screen for you. 1 Peter 5:8. 41:00 "Be alert and of sober" what? What's the word? >> Mind. 41:04 >> This is all up in the mind. 41:11 Do you know why the lion roars? He roars to paralyze his prey before he rips the prey apart. 41:20 He needs you paralyzed, immobile. 41:24 God keeps whispering in your ears, "I need a breakthrough, 41:27 girl. I need a breakthrough, boy. 41:29 Move it! Move it! Move it!" And the giant is telling you, 41:31 "You can't! You can't! You can't! You can't!" 41:35 Paralyzed. If you have a giant, by the way, 41:41 standing in front of you right now and some of you are thinking 41:44 of him... 41:47 who's been taunting you, some of you, ever since childhood... then it's time to take a page 41:51 out of David's playbook. You got to do action step number 2. 41:55 Put the words on the screen, please. What does it read in the story? 41:58 "As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly" -- 42:03 What's the next word? -- "toward" -- he "ran quickly toward the battle line to meet 42:08 his giant." He didn't run from his giant. He ran toward his giant. 42:13 You have to take the aggression. You have to take the initiative. You have to move against your 42:19 giant. You can't keep backing up because he will back you into a 42:23 corner and then you're lunch! You have to step forward when you don't feel like stepping 42:30 forward. I know a little bit about that. When everything in you is 42:33 saying, "Don't do it," you have to step forward. "I can't." "Yes, you can." 42:39 Remember the prayer. Remember the prayer. Action step number 2 -- 42:45 you run... toward your own giant. Let's do all three of these, 42:51 'cause we're ready for the final one now. Action step number 1 on the 42:55 screen -- fight in your own armor. Action step number 2 on the 42:59 screen -- run toward your own giant. 43:01 And now we're ready for action step number 3 -- call on your 43:05 own God. That's the key. 43:08 Come on. You got to read what David said 43:10 to Goliath. This is unbelievable. 43:13 So, you're near the middle of the chapter. 43:15 Let's drop down to verse 40. "Then David took his staff in 43:18 his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them 43:21 in the pouch of his shepherd's bag, and with the sling in his 43:25 hand, approaches," so he's going toward. 43:27 He is approaching the giant. 43:28 Now watch this. Verse 45. 43:59 Can I get an "Amen"? >> Amen! >> There is a God in Israel, and 44:03 Andrews University belongs to Israel. >> Amen. 44:27 [ Chuckling ] Wow. Pretty gutsy. Yo! You listening out there, 44:33 giants?! Can you hear us now?! I wish we had a YouTube of this 44:41 moment. I don't know how many watches it would have, but I'd watch it a 44:44 lot. "Patriarchs and Prophets" describes graphically this very 44:49 moment that we've just read. Put "Patriarchs and Prophets" on the screen, please. 45:14 Everybody heard it. Silent. And in a moment of frenzy... 45:26 Goliath foolishly -- foolishly -- pushed his massive brass helmet back, and as he 45:37 begins to run to David, David spots the most vulnerable part of the human cranium now 45:44 exposed to him. David, by the way, who is the backyard marksmanship specialist 45:50 with slings, sees that flesh come in his direction, and that little sling -- 45:56 [ Imitates whooshing ] And when he releases it, a tiny little -- one little flinty 46:02 projectile sails through the air. Bullmark! Bull's eye! 46:08 Right on the mark! And look at this on the screen. "The stone" -- 46:14 This is pretty graphic. "The stone" -- [ Imitates squishing ] 46:17 Slo-mo. [ Imitates squishing ] "The stone sank into his 46:22 forehead, and he fell facedown on the [Imitating rumbling] ground." 46:32 I love that. David grabs that sword and unsheathes it. 46:36 It's going to become his eventually. And high overhead... 46:41 he decapitates the wicked giant. Hell went into days of mourning, but all of heaven and Israel 46:50 rejoiced because the wicked giant is dead. >> Come on. 46:56 >> Amen. >> Ooh. Action step number 3. What is that again? 47:01 You do just like David did. You want to slay your giant? You do just like David did. 47:05 You call on your own God. And, by the way, did you catch the name David used? 47:10 What was it David said? "I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of 47:15 the armies of Israel, whom you have defied" -- youthful voice crying out. 47:18 The Hebrew reads this way. "I come to you in the name of Yahweh Sabaoth," 47:23 or Lord of Hosts," which means "the God of angel armies." Whoa. 47:29 Put that on the screen for us. "The God of angel armies." That was the God of 47:35 only a boy named David. That was the God of the stone, just the one stone that hit the 47:41 bull's eye... the God of angel armies. And I have good news for you, 47:49 because he's not only David's God, he's your God and my God. >> Amen! 47:54 >> Amen! >> Yeah, I want to go to that moment when the Son of David 47:57 is here. He is facing the darkest giant of his entire existence. 48:02 It is in the suffocating shadows of the Garden of Gethsemane that He stands all alone. 48:09 One of His closest friends is on the way to betray Him. Another even closer disciple 48:13 will deny Him in just moments from now. Jesus sees it all. 48:44 And then Jesus speaks words I hope you will never forget. You have 72,000 celestial warriors. 49:14 "Don't you understand? I say the word... 72,000 of my top fighters will 49:20 be right here in this space." Oh, I have good news for you. What the Son of David just told 49:30 us... is the secret to your victory... because the Son of David is 49:37 still the Son of David. They were born in the same town. They both became shepherds. 49:41 They both stood before the giantest giants of all the universe. 49:46 And they both won... in the name of their God, the God of angel armies. 49:52 You see that red fist going through -- going through -- through that brick? 49:56 Oh, I love that. Because there are times when, in facing off with your giant, 50:20 God has to stand back. He cannot show you the 72,000, but you need to know that 72,000 50:26 of the highest celestial warriors in the universe were ringing that cross. 50:31 You say, "How do you know, Dwight?" You know how I know? 50:34 Because He won -- that's why. He won. He wouldn't have won had the God 50:39 of angel armies not delivered Him, because He had to fight His giant the same way you and I do. 50:46 No fancy-dancy stuff. It's just raw faith. He's taunting you! 51:12 He's bringing everything back from your childhood that he can possibly think of, and he knows 51:15 your entire childhood like it were his own book. He knows you like the back of 51:19 his hand, and he's trying every trick in the book to paralyze you... 51:25 to hold you back from a breakthrough that God is promising you right now for this 51:29 new year. Breakthrough. You need the red fist... 51:34 because the red fist commands the angel armies. The red fist commands the angel 51:40 armies, and when you pray the prayer, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me," when you pray 51:46 that prayer on the screen, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me," you are asking for the 51:51 red fist to come through to your giant at this moment of absolute vulnerability. 51:57 "I'm about to go down, Jesus! You'll never see them, because 52:11 God's not a genie in a bottle, just show up when you rub the 52:14 bottle.
