01:10 >> Let's pray. Dear heavenly Father,
01:14 as we are gathered here, we just want to thank
01:16 You for Your goodness, for Your mercy,
01:19 and for being with us. You have been with us
01:22 throughout this week. You have blessed us.
01:24 You've walked with us, so if there's anything
01:26 that is distracting us or making us worried,
01:29 we just want to place those in Your hands at this time.
01:32 So open our hearts, our minds, and just challenge us
01:36 and inspire us during this hour of worship, in Jesus' name.
01:39 Amen. >> Amen.
01:42 >> Good morning and happy Sabbath.
01:45 Happy Sabbath! Are you ready to worship
01:49 and praise our God? Amen.
01:51 So you might have had a challenging week, or you might
01:54 have had a great week. But, you know, I know that
01:57 we are all thankful and glad that it's Sabbath,
02:00 so we just, as we're about to sing, invite you to stand
02:02 and sing with us "Come, Now Is The Time To
02:05 Worship."
10:38 There is just something about that name, and it comforts us
10:43 during our times of trouble. You know, we call on the name
10:47 of Jesus, so as we're about to have our prayer time,
10:50 I just invite those who have any prayers or petitions
10:53 or any praises to come forward and lay them at the feet
10:56 of Jesus because He will take care of it all.
11:00 So please stand with us as we sing.
13:08 >> Good morning, boys and girls. Happy Sabbath to you.
13:13 >> Good morning. >> Aww, come on.
13:14 >> Morning! >> Happy Sabbath to you.
13:18 >> Happy Sabbath! >> Happy Sabbath,
13:20 first Sabbath of October. Nice to have you here today.
13:23 We got something pretty special right now coming through
13:27 that door over there. Don't stand up.
13:31 Stay down so that everybody can see.
13:34 Let's see what we have coming through the door today.
13:37 Oh my, can you see it? Look on the big screen.
13:40 Maybe they'll put it on the big screen.
13:42 All right. Here he comes. Do you know what that is?
13:47 That is a dog. Oh my.
13:50 Oh, so what's so special about having a dog?
13:54 We've had dogs before. Well look it. That's a --
13:57 Take a look at that dog. Look on the screen or look right
13:59 here. That is a -- Shh.
14:05 That is a half-Australian... >> Shepherd.
14:10 >> ...Shepherd, and they don't know what the other half is.
14:13 But, trust me, the other half looks exactly like this
14:15 because that doesn't look like an Australian Shepherd, okay?
14:18 So that is Tribby. Can you say, "Welcome, Tribby"?
14:23 >> Welcome, Tribby! >> Oh, Tribby is so happy
14:26 to see you. Has he already kissed you?
14:28 Oh, he just is a big kisser. First service he was kissing
14:31 everybody, but I want to tell you about Tribby.
14:33 He's not just another dog. Listen to this. Shh!
14:37 Tribby is a service dog. A service dog.
14:43 Do you know what a service dog is?
14:45 >> Yes. >> Can you stand back just a
14:48 little bit, please? You know what a service dog is?
14:50 A service dog, listen to this. Okay, everybody sit down.
14:55 Sissy, thank you so much. A service dog provides
14:59 a special service, so if a person is blind,
15:03 what would a service dog do? Oh, he would look.
15:07 She would look. "Where do you need to see?
15:09 What do you need to see?" If a person can't hear -- shh!
15:14 Because we can hear -- shh! If a person can't hear,
15:18 what does a service dog do? A service dog listens.
15:22 "Is there a car coming? Is that the sound of a horn?"
15:25 Ooh, if a person can't walk and is in a wheelchair,
15:29 what does a service dog do? The service dog goes in front,
15:33 checking to make sure there's a smooth piece of ground
15:35 for that wheelchair to ride over.
15:37 This is my friend Abby Vaughn, and this is her service dog.
15:43 Isn't he something? You know, when I look
15:46 at that service dog, you know what I think of?
15:48 I think of Jesus. That's what I think of.
15:50 Because, you know what, when you can't see,
15:52 guess who goes beside us to see? Oh!
15:55 And when you can't hear the devil speaking, guess who
15:57 can hear and who can help us? >> Jesus.
16:01 >> And when you don't know where to go, who goes right
16:03 in front of us to lead the way? >> Jesus.
16:06 >> Jesus does. You know what Jesus is?
16:08 He's a service Savior. Can you say that out loud?
16:12 >> A service Savior. >> Wherever we go,
16:17 He is a very friendly presence with us, just like Tribby.
16:22 Oh, look at Tribby. He wants to get up there
16:24 and kiss you so bad. Aren't you glad for Jesus?
16:28 Sir. What is Jesus again?
16:30 A service Savior. He's with us all the way
16:36 until we get home. Anybody want to thank Jesus
16:39 for being our service Savior? Anybody want to thank Jesus?
16:44 I'm looking for a new face. Come here, Sissy.
16:48 Angelica, you just come right up here,
16:51 and here comes the microphone. And we're going to thank Jesus.
16:53 Shh, we're going to thank Jesus for being our service
16:58 Savior, just like Tribby. All right.
17:03 Let's close our eyes and pray with Angelica.
17:07 >> Dear Jesus, thank you for this day.
17:10 Please help everyone to be kind, and thank you...
17:15 >> For being a service Savior. >> ...for being a service
17:21 savior, amen. >> Amen. Thank you, Angelica.
17:24 Can you say that to Jesus as you go quietly and reverently
17:26 back to your seats? "Thank you Jesus for being
17:29 our service Savior."
21:55 >> In a moment, we're going to pray, and then I'm going to ask
21:57 you to open your Bible to John 10.
21:58 If you'll just get it to John 10 right now, there's just one
22:01 line. It's red-letter words,
22:03 and it's just dynamite. So that's all we're going to
22:06 focus on, is that one line. And I'll pray with you
22:10 in just a moment, but you've got to admit,
22:13 we humans, we're funny creatures.
22:17 Have you heard about people celebrating losing?
22:22 We got a phone call from our son Kirk this week,
22:25 and it was followed up with a text message from Chelsea,
22:29 our daughter-in-law. Just this short little message
22:33 tucked away in that note, "Number three is out,"
22:38 and we're thinking they've given us two of our granddaughters.
22:40 Maybe this is number three coming out or getting ready
22:42 to come out or whatever. I don't know.
22:45 Then she put a picture with it, disabused us of that thought,
22:48 and here's the picture she put in.
22:52 That's our granddaughter Ella, and her third tooth
22:55 came out this week. So everybody is calling
22:58 and celebrating losing. It's amazing.
23:00 We celebrate losing our teeth in the beginning,
23:02 and by the time we get down at the end of the journey,
23:05 we're hanging onto those teeth for dear life.
23:07 Like, don't celebrate losing anything.
23:11 Ah, we're a funny creature, we humans.
23:15 We celebrate losing. We celebrate losing our weight.
23:18 We celebrate losing our minds. No, we don't really celebrate
23:23 losing our minds. That's one of the things
23:24 we want to hang onto because there's some stuff
23:26 that we don't want to lose. We don't want to lose our minds.
23:30 We don't want to lose our friends.
23:33 We don't want to lose our health,
23:36 and I'm thinking that what we're about to plunge into together,
23:39 you and me, this might have kind of
23:42 universal appeal for all of us. This is another one of those
23:45 DIY, what my Gen Z'er friends, and Abby is one of my
23:49 Gen Z'er friends. She's going to be up here
23:50 with me in just a moment to help me preach this, but they're
23:53 calling these DIYs. This is do-it-yourself, and
23:57 what's the title of this one? "Do It Yourself: A DIY Guide
24:01 How To Be Healthier And Live A Whole Lot Longer."
24:04 So we're going to get to that in just a second, but first
24:06 I want to pray with you, and I want to go to that line
24:09 in John 10:10. Do you have it ready to go?
24:12 All right. Let's pray. Father, thank you.
24:15 We're crazy creatures. We celebrate losing.
24:20 We celebrate winning. It just depends
24:22 on what you're talking about, and he we are looking now
24:25 at a guide for health. Are you serious, Father?
24:28 A DIY guide for how to live longer?
24:32 If You can give that to us, give it to us right now please.
24:34 We're coming to You in the name of Jesus.
24:36 One line, a provocative promise He makes.
24:38 Penetrating, may it make sense to us we pray,
24:42 right now, in Jesus' name. Amen.
24:44 So open your Bible to John 10:10.
24:46 Already there? Good. John 10:10, I'm in the NIV.
24:49 We'll put it on the screen for you.
24:51 Here is this penetrating promise, red letters all the way
24:55 through this chapter. So my verse is in red here,
24:58 John 10:10, Jesus speaking.
25:09 Okay, hit the pause button right there. Come on.
25:12 There is only one person in this universe, you got to admit it,
25:15 only one person in this universe who comes to steal and kill and destroy.
25:23 And you know who I'm talking about.
25:27 I'm not going to mention his name because he gets
25:28 some sort of perverse pleasure when people talk about him.
25:31 I'm not even going to mention his name.
25:33 He's demented anyway. He's the only one
25:35 in the universe that comes to steal and kill and destroy.
25:39 Mm, but where's this big promise that you were talking about,
25:42 Dwight? Well, let's read it again.
25:44 John 10:10.
25:56 Oh, boy. It's party time. Did you get that? Jesus to the max,
26:01 and when it's Jesus to the max, what does he say? "I have come so that
26:06 all of that guilt stuff that you're dealing with... you know, the always
26:10 looking-over-your-shoulder kind of guilt? I've come to take that away.
26:14 I've come to take away that flashing red light called your conscience.
26:18 I'm going to steal your conscience. I want to be to the max
26:22 in your life, and I will give you the abundant life. I have come to take away
26:29 your moral bad health, so that you'll never wake up with a hangover again.
26:35 I have come to give you the life, and life to the max, life to the full.
26:42 And when I forgive your sins, by the way, I'm going to so bless your body with new life,
26:50 I'm going to so bless your soul with new health, that you'll never be the same again."
26:57 Put it on the screen for us again, please. Jesus says...
27:04 Do you want the full life? You know what they say, don't you?
27:08 The softest pillow in the world is a clear conscience. Jesus says, "I can give you
27:14 that clear conscience. Here's the deal: You take me, and I'll give you life
27:20 to the max and the full. You take me, and I'll give that to you."
27:26 Talk about health. If you talk about good, good health...
27:30 Let's take a look at it together. I came across a blogging
27:34 scientist the other day. Boy, I'm sure glad I found her. She's a research scientist,
27:40 UC Davis. You've heard of University of California in
27:42 Davis. It's a big institution. She is the founding director
27:45 of UC David Integrated Medicine. So I'm starting to read her blog, and I come across
27:52 these words, and I want you to see them. They're on the screen right now.
28:01 Whoa, Loma Linda? I used to have grandparents that lived in Loma Linda.
28:04 I've been there.
28:13 You're kidding me. Keep reading.
28:38 Now I want to say a word about those studies that she reviewed, but I'm really excited
28:41 about these eight secrets. And, by the way, she came up with them herself.
28:46 They're not in the study. She read all the studies and then came up with these.
28:50 They'll be our DIY, our do-it-yourself list for today, but first,
28:54 she's absolutely right. Since 1960 -- Get this. Since 1960, there have been
29:01 three major studies of the Seventh-Day Adventist lifestyle. The first one was in 1960.
29:06 The second one was in 1974. The third one -- it's still going on, by the way -- 2002.
29:13 The last two are called Adventist Health Study One. The third one is
29:17 Adventist Health Study Two. Very interesting about those studies.
29:22 By the way, Adventist Health Study Two, that's going on right now?
29:24 And some of you are still participating in this. Listen to this.
29:29 It was funded by the National Cancer Institute with an additional $5.5 million grant
29:36 given by the National Institutes of Health so that it could focus on over
29:41 96,000 Seventh-Day Adventists between the ages of 30 and 112, living only in Canada
29:52 and the United States. So it's a study on North America.
29:56 Amazing. Now I need to tell you this. These guys were
30:00 not commissioned by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The Seventh-Day Adventist Church
30:04 accepts the findings of the studies, but it did not sponsor these studies.
30:07 So that makes it even more intriguing. All three studies have explored
30:11 the links between lifestyle, diet, and disease among us Seventh-Day Adventists with some
30:17 rather interesting factoids. So let me give you one from Adventist Health Study One.
30:22 I'll put it one the screen for you, all right?
30:33 What are they?
30:46 And then the Adventist Health Study number two...
30:49 Here are some factoids. Now I need to tell you this in advance.
30:52 This is not comparing the Adventist population with the rest of the population.
30:56 This is comparing Adventists with Adventists because there are six
31:00 categories they came up with when it comes to our diets, and you can imagine
31:04 what the six are, so I'm not going to give them to you. But watch this, on the screen,
31:08 from AH number two.
31:27 Hmm. Here comes factoid number two
31:30 in AH Two. Interesting.
31:41 Here comes bullet number three.
31:57 You get half the incidences of Type 2 diabetes.
32:01 One more.
32:08 In other words, vegetarians live longer.
32:11 That's what they found in AHS number two.
32:17 So what was Jesus' promise again?
32:19 Look at it on the screen again. John 10:10. Come on.
32:21 Jesus says...
32:26 The question is, how can we experience this life to the full?
32:31 That's what everybody wants. It doesn't matter your age. It was really fascinating
32:36 for me. I'm just going to be up-front here.
32:38 To look over the shoulders of this woman... Her name is Rosane Oliveira.
32:43 She's the, as I mentioned, the director of integrated medicine at UC Davis,
32:48 but I'm looking over her shoulders as she said, "I've read all these studies,
32:51 and hey, blog readers, I've come up with eight lessons you need to know about."
32:57 I'll put her words on the screen -- Rosane Oliveira.
33:08 So, I'm going to share them with you, come on.
33:09 Let's scribble them down. Abby is going to come up here,
33:12 and we'll be done. But would you pull out
33:14 your new study guide? It should be tucked away in your
33:15 worship bulletin right now. Pull it out, please.
33:17 This is our DIY, do-it-yourself, list of eight life lessons
33:22 for long, lasting health. All right?
33:26 Eight lessons... You didn't get one?
33:27 Here come our friend, the ushers.
33:28 Put your hand up, and they'll make sure you get one of those.
33:31 If you're watching on a screen right now, if you're watching
33:32 on television, you see that little website at the bottom?
33:35 That is our website, newperceptions.tv.
33:39 You go there, and you'll find this particular little
33:44 conversation we're having today. It's entitled a "A DIY Guide
33:48 How To Be Healthier And Live A Whole Lot Longer."
33:51 Click on the study guide, and you'll get the same list of
33:53 eight. You have to fill in the blanks
33:55 with us. We're glad to have you
33:57 watching live-stream or wherever you are right now.
33:59 All right. So you've got it up
34:02 in the balcony, as well? Are you getting them up
34:04 in the balcony? Good.
34:06 Well, let's not -- Without any further ado, let's
34:08 go. Eight lessons for a long,
34:10 healthy life. Write it down.
34:11 Number one: Take breaks. So this director of Integrated
34:18 Medicine, looking at Seventh-Day Adventists in Loma Linda,
34:21 she said, "Hey, I learned something from these guys.
34:23 Take breaks." Now the words that follow
34:25 are also hers, okay? She puts in parentheses
34:30 "24 hours," and then I put in brackets, "the Sabbath,"
34:33 "from daily life to focus on family, God, friends and nature.
34:37 They believe this relieves their stress, strengthens
34:40 their social communities and provides healthful,
34:43 consistent exercise." End quote.
34:45 She doesn't say a word about why we do it.
34:47 I just remind you, in case you forgot.
34:48 The Fourth Commandment of the Ten Commandments,
34:50 that begins with the words "Remember the Sabbath to keep it
34:52 holy," it ends with these words. Scribble is down.
34:55 There it is, Exodus 20:11.
35:11 Why do we rest? Because the creator did.
35:13 It's a great idea. And guess what.
35:15 Research now shows it adds to a healthful life: longevity.
35:20 I love the way Moses describes the greatest rest...
35:22 Keep your pen moving. Exodus 31:17.
35:25 "And on the 7th day, the Creator rested and was refreshed."
35:30 She says, "They have time with their friends.
35:32 They have time in nature. They have time to relax."
35:35 Yep, you're right. You nailed it on the head.
35:38 That's one of the secrets to longevity right there, and good
35:41 health. All right, there are eight of
35:42 these, and here comes number two.
35:46 They call that BMI. Now she writes...
36:06 So where did somebody come up with this whole food,
36:09 plant-based diet idea? From the Creator.
36:13 Jot this down. Genesis 1. The Creator is talking right
36:16 now...
36:34 Now the research is showing that a whole food,
36:37 plant-based diets are the secret to a long, healthy life.
36:41 Got it? The Creator obviously knew
36:43 what He was doing when He assigned that diet.
36:45 Number three. Jot it down, please.
36:51 She writes, the good news is that you don't have to
36:53 run a marathon.
37:02 Enough said. Abby is coming up in just a
37:04 moment. We're going to talk about that.
37:06 We'll kind of tease that one out, speaking about exercise.
37:08 Number four, write it down, please.
37:09 There are only eight of these.
37:12 Who wouldn't like that? She nailed it on the head again.
37:22 Jesus, in John 13:35, on the screen for you.
37:32 So I'm a little curious on this one, so I step away from her
37:35 blog. And I go into Google, and I want
37:37 to find out about relationships. We just had that "Roommates,
37:39 Bad Dates, and Soulmates" series.
37:41 I said, "Listen, tell me about the effect of relationships."
37:44 The National Institutes of Health,
37:46 summarizing 148 different studies...
37:50 Look at this. Put it on the screen for you.
38:06 We all knew smoking was a risk factor and alcohol consumption
38:10 is a risk factor. Now,
38:13 the National Institutes say this idea of friendships moves
38:16 right up there with alcohol and tobacco in its effect on our
38:20 longevity." But she goes on.
38:23 And by the way...
38:32 In other words, I refuse to exercise,
38:34 and I'm not losing weight. If you have close friends,
38:37 that will mitigate, to a degree, some of that, those risk factors
38:43 in terms of your death age. Number five.
38:47 Jot it down, please. I like this. "Give back."
38:59 True or false? Come on. We all know it's true.
39:02 You know what? There are scores of studies that
39:04 show, by the way, that volunteers -- No kidding.
39:06 Volunteers, whether you're a student going to class...
39:11 You say, "Dwight, I'm taking classes."
39:13 That doesn't count as volunteering.
39:15 You have to take those classes. Your mind and body know
39:18 when you're doing something that you don't have to do,
39:19 and they reward you with these little boosting chemicals
39:23 that actually raise your immunity level and expand your
39:29 longevity. Volunteering for senior
39:32 citizens, we've got retirees in this communities.
39:35 Volunteering at neighbor-to-neighbor is a huge
39:38 boost for your immune system and your longevity.
39:42 That's what she's talking about -- give back!
39:44 Jesus put it well: Luke 6:38.
39:52 Get involved. Okay. Number six.
39:54 Ooh, number six is going to be one we wrestle with.
39:56 Number six, some of you are going to start
39:57 pushing back right now. "Oh, I love the first five.
39:59 Don't give me number six." But number six is one
40:01 that this particular community needs to hear, all right?
40:04 So number six...
40:09 Now she's talking about supper, okay?
40:12 "Eat an early, light dinner. A lighter meal at the end
40:17 of the day will promote better sleep and a lower BMI."
40:22 End quote. Whoa.
40:24 And then I remembered something I read in Christianity Today.
40:27 Oh, I was so glad this last week -- Ah, I kept it.
40:30 And I want to tell you about it. It was written by a physician
40:32 named Lindsay Stokes. She's describing something
40:36 called autophagy. Can I put the word
40:38 on the screen for you? Autophagy.
40:41 Yeah, what's up with that? Autophagy describes a process
40:44 that the cells go through. When the cells don't find
40:48 nutrition outside of them, you know what they do?
40:53 They go inside. They have some proteins lying
40:55 around. They have some little body parts
40:57 within the cell that are lying around.
40:58 They start eating those proteins, and they start
41:01 consuming those body parts. As long as there is food
41:05 going by, they don't do that clean up work.
41:08 And guess what they have found. Autophagy is the body
41:12 extending your life because, you know what?
41:15 If you don't eat just before you go to bed...
41:17 Now, some of us are on a two-meal-a-day.
41:20 Karen and I have breakfast, and we have lunch.
41:21 And that's it, and I'm just telling you the truth.
41:24 You get hungry around supper time.
41:27 I wish I could tell you it ain't so, but you do.
41:30 But guess what? When you give your body a break,
41:34 and it needs considerable time for that break,
41:37 grabbing that pizza just before you drop off to sleep?
41:40 That really -- You say, "Dwight, I really do
41:42 better when I have food in my tummy.
41:43 I sleep well." You know why you sleep well?
41:45 Because all the blood from your brain has gone down to the
41:47 stomach. But while the brain is sleeping,
41:49 the stomach is going -- [ Gurgling ]
41:53 all night long. It's getting zero rest,
41:56 and tomorrow morning I'll just grab a couple
41:58 Dunkin' Donuts, and then I'm off!
42:01 You keep eating all day long. You graze right through the day.
42:05 There is no break. There is no break
42:08 for those cells that say, "Give me a break. Stop.
42:12 I won't turn out there for food now.
42:15 I will turn in here." By the way, I'm just going to
42:17 throw this in. Alzheimer's?
42:19 Anybody with white hair is concerned about Alzheimer's.
42:21 Trust me. Alzheimer's --
42:26 No, I'm not going to get into it now.
42:29 I'm going to do it in November. I'm going to do it in November.
42:31 We're going to talk about mental health, and let me tell you.
42:33 Baby Boomers are really very nervous about Alzheimer's.
42:36 I'm reading a book called "The End of Alzheimer's."
42:38 It's fascinating, and by November I'll be able
42:40 to help you out. Don't get into the descriptions
42:43 right now, but the point is, the brain
42:46 needs you to stop eating so that the brain
42:49 can clean up what's been built into the brain,
42:52 squirted in the brain all day long.
42:55 Your bright minds have been -- The brain says, "Stop.
42:58 Don't eat. Give me a break." That's what she's writing about,
43:02 so I'm going to put her words on the screen right now, okay?
43:04 So this is Lindsay Stokes talking about autophagy.
43:26 There's one other method you can use,
43:28 and it's called famine. And when famine occurs,
43:31 and the food supply drops off, the body begins slowly
43:35 to consume itself. It has no choice.
43:39 We don't want that, but 12 hours...
43:43 First Tuesdays on this campus? The day of fasting and prayer?
43:46 You could go with 24 hours and do your body
43:48 a very big favor. Just stop eating. You won't die.
43:54 It'll feel like it, but you won't.
44:01 Number seven. There are only eight of these.
44:03 "Drink lots of water." Jot that down, please.
44:05 She writes...
44:16 They're now finding eight glasses of water is even better.
44:18 We'll talk about that when Abby comes up in 2 split seconds.
44:22 All right. Number eight, the final one.
44:25 "Eat a mostly plant-based diet." She says,
44:29 "Looking at these Adventists, and I've concluded plant-based
44:33 is what they do." Now these are her words.
45:03 Ladies, listen up.
45:15 Or, as my grandma would say, to-mah-toes.
45:18 And by the way, guys, smile along with the ladies
45:21 because tomatoes are excellent for prostate health.
45:24 Mm-hmm. You don't want to mess
45:27 with prostate cancer. Nobody does.
45:29 Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes. And by the way, that's not
45:33 guzzling a jar of ketchup down. All right, there they are,
45:38 ladies and gentlemen -- eight lessons.
45:40 Eight lessons for a long, healthy life.
45:42 Put Jesus' words on the screen again for us, please,
45:44 John 10:10.
45:49 That's the abundant life. There isn't a soul here
45:52 that isn't saying, "Man, I want that life.
45:54 Girl, I want that life." Me too.
45:56 Abby Vaughn, come on up here. She's my new friend.
45:59 You know what Abby Vaughn is? She is a senior
46:01 at Andrews University. She's a senior at
46:04 Andrews University, a dietetics major.
46:06 So this is her last year. This is a big deal.
46:08 She is also a wellness associate.
46:11 So we're talking about about the brand-new
46:13 Andreasen Center for Wellness, right across from the church
46:16 right here, and she works over there.
46:19 And number three, she is a -- I got to always look this up --
46:21 a group fitness instructor. So you want to talk about
46:24 fitness? This woman can help.
46:26 And qualification number four? She is a member of the largest
46:30 generation on this planet right now, and they're called
46:32 Gen Z'ers, and you're looking at a Gen Z'er right here,
46:35 born between 1995 and 2006. Sorry.
46:45 So, Abby, I mean, this is fascinating stuff.
46:48 This little lady is looking at all these
46:50 Adventist Health Studies. So, Abby, look.
46:54 You're the exercise specialist. Let's just begin right there.
46:57 Come on. Really give us a little bit
46:59 of motivation now. I mean, she said,
47:01 "Oh, they exercise." But come on.
47:03 Give us some motivation. What are some benefits for
47:04 exercise, fitness instructor? >> For sure, for sure.
47:07 So, there is actually a ton of benefits for exercise.
47:10 I'll name a few. One of them, you're going
47:12 to have a lot more energy in the long run,
47:14 so you get up, you exercise. As you continue doing that,
47:19 your body will learn to adjust to that exercise,
47:22 and you will gain more energy. You're going to increase
47:25 your muscle strength and tone, and who doesn't want to be toned
47:29 and have some good muscle strength in order to pick things
47:31 up and do what you need to do? You're going to have
47:34 better posture, so you're going to be able to --
47:37 The muscles in your back and everywhere is going to help
47:40 you have that better posture. So if you think about
47:42 what you're doing right now, some of you are probably
47:44 slouching, kind of leaning up against the back of your seat.
47:49 If you exercise on a regular basis, you will definitely have
47:52 that better posture. You're going to have less
47:55 chronic illness. So exercise actually has
47:58 a way of transforming your body. >> Cool.
48:01 >> And changing those genes that you have so that
48:04 you have less chronic illness. >> So let me ask you about group
48:06 exercise because that's kind of your specialty.
48:09 I mean, do you recommend that? >> I do recommend it. Oh, yeah.
48:12 >> Why? Why? >> So there's a couple
48:15 different things that, with group fitness exercise,
48:18 that you can get. >> Mm-hmm?
48:20 >> One of them is that, when I go to group fitness
48:23 classes, I look at the person on my left and right.
48:26 >> Mm-hmm? >> And I say, "Well, if they're
48:28 doing it that hard, and she's doing it that hard, well I can
48:30 definitely do it a lot better than they can."
48:33 And so it's a way that you can push yourself and kind of have
48:35 a competition with yourself. And no one has to know
48:39 about that, and then also what you were talking about, being
48:42 social and connected with the people around you?
48:45 You have all of these people that have the same goals as you,
48:48 to better their lives and get completely well.
48:52 And so you have these people that can gather around you if
48:54 you're struggling and build you up.
48:57 >> Mm-hmm. Yeah. >> Listen, we could spend
49:00 a half hour just on exercise, but I want to move on
49:02 to your other area of specialty right now, and that is
49:04 dietetics. So what are they teaching you
49:07 in dietetic school? >> This is actually
49:10 one of my favorite topics. >> Okay.
49:12 >> So diet -- There's a ton of different
49:15 things we could talk about, but there's a couple things
49:17 that really a lot of people struggle with.
49:19 And one of that is our portion sizes, so going to the cafeteria
49:22 here, we have an all-you-can-eat buffet.
49:26 You go out to restaurants, they have these buffets.
49:28 >> Mm-hmm? >> And one way that you can
49:31 decrease on your portion sizes is only take one plate,
49:34 and that's actually one reason why the cafeteria --
49:36 >> Only one plate? >> Only one plate.
49:38 So there's actually scientific evidence that if
49:43 you only get one plate of food, and you only eat that,
49:45 it's part of the lowering your BMI type of thing.
49:48 >> Got you. >> So one plate of food.
49:51 What I was saying, the cafeteria here, that is
49:52 actually one of the reasons why they don't have trays.
49:55 Because it helps you to portion. >> Ah, I missed them
49:59 the last time I went. They said, "Yeah,
50:01 we're not using trays anymore." Okay, but, by the way, speaking
50:04 of the cafeteria, thank you for giving them a shout-out.
50:06 You know, I'm pretty impressed. I mean, everything is labeled --
50:09 vegan, vegetarian, carnivorous. No, there's no carnivorous,
50:15 but they're going out of their way to help us.
50:17 >> Right. >> Yeah. So this diet thing.
50:18 I mean, everybody is into a new diet.
50:20 I just, this last week, I heard about a primal diet.
50:22 Eat what the ancients did, no pasteurized anything.
50:26 Give me a break. What's up with these diets?
50:28 >> Yeah, so I actually don't like the word "diet."
50:31 >> No? >> Because if you think
50:33 about it, I'm sure most of you have been on a diet before.
50:35 So you start a diet. You go through the diet.
50:38 You reach your goal, and then you just stop.
50:40 And what happens after you stop is you end up
50:43 right back where you were. >> Mm.
50:45 >> So I like to use the word lifestyle change.
50:47 So with that lifestyle change, you start that lifestyle change,
50:52 but you don't ever have an end date.
50:54 You don't have an end goal. You're just constantly
50:57 trying to better your life. >> Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
51:00 Be honest with me. Do you like junk food?
51:02 >> I do like junk food, and it's a thing
51:04 that a lot of people think that if you're into wellness
51:06 and if you're into health, that you don't like.
51:08 And, you know, studying to be a dietitian,
51:11 a lot of people think that, "Oh, she doesn't eat cake,
51:13 and she doesn't like ice cream." I love it, but the thing is,
51:16 what you do, if you like something, you get some.
51:20 >> Mm-hmm? >> But you portion it.
51:21 So say you like pizza. Instead of eating
51:23 a half of a pizza, you're going to eat one slice.
51:26 So if you're craving something and you don't eat it,
51:29 it's actually going to end up building up,
51:31 and eventually you'll cave in. And you'll eat that whole pizza,
51:34 and then you're going to give up on what that goal was.
51:36 >> Mm-hmm. Okay. We're hastening to talk about --
51:41 We need to talk about water. We had an interesting discussion
51:44 in the first service. What do you
51:45 want to say about water? Because we just read, that's
51:48 one of the big deals for her. She said, you know, what?
51:51 Six glasses, five to six glasses for men, yada, yada, yada.
51:55 What's up with water? >> Right, right.
51:56 So water is actually very important.
51:58 It was given to us by God, so it has to be important.
52:01 So actually for every person, your water intake
52:05 is going to be different. There's formulas you can
52:07 find online for that, but basically the easiest way
52:10 to figure out whether you're drinking enough water
52:13 is if you look at your urine, and if it's clear,
52:15 you're drinking enough. If it's not,
52:17 then you need to drink more. >> Well, that's really easy
52:20 to figure out. So, in other words,
52:27 water is absolutely -- No matter what age,
52:29 it's absolutely essential. Drinking coffee that's liquid
52:33 is not drinking water, is it? >> That's correct.
52:35 >> Yeah. And pop? >> That's correct.
52:37 So, while it is a liquid, it does have caffeine in it,
52:39 and caffeine is actually considered a diuretic.
52:42 Diuretic means that it makes you lose water, so for every cup
52:48 of caffeine that you drink, you should actually drink another
52:50 cup of water to compensate for that.
52:52 >> Mm-hmm? Let's talk about sleep because
52:53 she didn't mention sleep at all. Isn't that amazing?
52:55 Eight lessons of life, she didn't get the sleep part.
52:57 Let's talk about sleep, especially on a campus like
53:00 this, where sleep is at a premium.
53:02 So is there, like, a suggested giving guide
53:06 for sleep or something? >> Well, you should actually
53:09 sleep up to 7 to 8 hours. I know, as college students,
53:14 as parents, getting up and then going to bed at night,
53:18 getting that rest that you need is actually really hard.
53:21 Sometimes you're an evening person,
53:24 so that doesn't mean that you have to go to bed
53:26 right at 9:00 and get up at 5:00.
53:27 You can take that a little bit later.
53:30 >> Mm-hmm? >> And go to sleep a little bit
53:32 later, as long as you get that 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
53:34 >> Somebody came up to me after first service and said,
53:37 "Hey, listen," and scribbled it out here.
53:40 "For good sleep, no computer, television screens
53:42 before you fall asleep." Is there a --
53:44 What's up with that? >> Yeah, so I'm not completely
53:47 studied in this. >> Yeah?
53:48 >> But from what I've read and what I've seen,
53:50 there is light on that screen. >> Mm-hmm?
53:52 >> And that light actually changes with the chemicals in
53:54 your body and makes you stay awake longer, and it makes it
53:57 harder to sleep. There are actually apps that you
54:00 can get that changes that light into a different frequency
54:03 that allows you be able to sleep sooner
54:06 if you do choose to look at it. >> Mm-hmm, okay.
54:08 >> We don't suggest it, but it is there.
54:10 >> Okay, this idea of, "Look. I'm young right now.
54:14 I'm a Gen Z'er or a millennial. When I get to be 50, I'm going
54:18 to really start honing in, and by the time I'm 70,
54:21 I'm going to just -- perfect health."
54:23 What about waiting, putting it off?
54:25 >> Yeah, so first thing I want to say is,
54:29 why wait and put off what you can do today for later?
54:33 So if you start now, you're actually going to see
54:35 the benefits as you get older. >> Mm-hmm?
54:38 >> So it takes such little time to be healthy.
54:42 You can take 30 minutes out of your day.
54:43 Have a 20-minute workout. Do some meditation
54:46 or just quiet time. >> Mm-hmm.
54:48 >> Drink your two glasses of water in the morning
54:50 right when you get up, and just take 30 minutes a day.
54:55 You can find recipes online that cost less than $1 per
54:58 serving, so the money issue, if you really look into it,
55:02 you can do it. >> Yeah.
55:03 >> It's doable. >> Let's end by talking about
55:05 Jesus. Abby, what's Jesus in your life?
55:09 >> You know, if we look back to creation,
55:12 and we see all the things that He has given to us.
55:14 He gave us the water. He gave us the nuts
55:17 and the grains and the fruits and everything we need
55:20 to have that restful and peaceful environment
55:22 and keep our bodies healthy that He gave us.
55:26 And we can do that by eating and taking care
55:30 of the things that he gave us. >> Mm-hmm.
55:32 >> So taking care of our bodies as the temples that he gave us
55:35 through the stuff that he gave us.
55:36 >> It's a big partnership. >> Oh, yeah.
55:38 >> And he has a vested interest. It's abundant life, right?
55:40 >> Correct. >> Abundant life.
55:41 Put your hands together for Abby Vaughn and our Gen Z'ers.
55:44 Thank you, Abby. God bless you.
55:51 Let's put it up one more time. Jesus' words. John 10:10.
55:59 I want to end with these words. A little American lady,
56:02 she's about 5'3" tall, she actually wrote
56:07 the literature that has led to the Adventist lifestyle
56:11 that the world and the culture today are sitting up
56:15 and taking notice of. She put the whole package
56:18 together. Her name is Ellen White.
56:20 She wrote a book called "Ministry of Healing."
56:23 It's a little classic. In a moment I'll give you

56:28 this quotation from her book. The words of that little
56:33 American writer....
56:42 I love this.
56:57 That's the abundant life. "I will give you this life
