But, guys, something that I've been trying to encourage myself 08:14 to do is to surrender before the week begins. And, guys, although it is 08:18 Sabbath and it's the end of a new -- of another week, it's also the beginning of 08:22 the new week. So I encourage you guys, as you guys go throughout life, 08:28 surrender everything to God. Don't leave anything out. Don't leave anything out. 08:35 Even the little things that you think are insignificant, they're significant to God 08:40 because He loves you. Father, that's our prayer -- 20:21 nothing but the blood of Jesus. What's that mean? How do we do it? 20:30 Show us now. Hide me, hide us all behind the Jesus we've come to worship. 20:39 In His name, we pray. Amen. The saddest story I ever heard 20:45 I heard on the radio. I was going home one evening from Pioneer for supper. 20:50 I'm listening to WBBM Newsradio out of Chicago. And I had to pull off the road. 20:59 My eyes were so out of focus with tears. 21:04 West Monroe, Louisiana. A father and mother were going 21:08 out for a Saturday night, and they took their 14-year-old 21:12 little girl over to her girlfriend's place 21:15 to spend the night. But as young daughters can do, 21:20 the girls changed their mind. And they said -- And Kaye said 21:24 to her friend, "Let's go over -- Let's go to our house, 21:27 and we'll spend the rest of the night in our house." 21:31 1:00 in the morning, Mom and Dad come back from Saturday night on the town, and Kaye says, 21:37 "Let's surprise them." So they jump into a closet. Father walks in. 21:44 Just as he steps in, the door flies open to that closet. "Boo!" 21:51 The father instinctively grabs a gun and shoots his daughter through the neck. 21:58 Her last words to him -- "Daddy, I love you." 22:09 I just sat there at the side of the road. I have a little girl. 22:12 She's still my little girl. And I cannot imagine how a father would feel 22:22 killing his little girl. We've got an obscure text here. We're going to look at it 22:31 right now. It has this story and Jesus' love written all over it. 22:36 And you've got to see it. So open your Bible. Hope you can find the book -- 22:39 Zechariah. It's next to the last book in the Old Testament. 22:43 If you get to Malachi, just one more book. Zechariah, chapter 12. 22:50 Zechariah, chapter 12. 22:59 God's speaking. "I will pour out on the house of David 23:04 and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace 23:09 and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, 23:16 and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him 23:21 as one grieves for a firstborn son." I was in this church yesterday 23:27 afternoon as we said goodbye to a firstborn son. Too young to die. 23:32 Just under 40 years of age. Sad. I can't imagine that father 23:41 on the front row of his daughter's funeral. I mean, what is going through 23:46 his mind? But that's what we just read. See this line? 23:54 "They will look on me, the one they have pierced." They killed Him. 24:01 They killed Him. 24:06 It's as plain as a nose on your face. It's interesting, that line, 24:12 "The one they have pierced," their look on me. It's tucked away in 24:16 the New Testament. Friday afternoon, late, the man on the center Cross 24:23 has just expired with that triumphant cry. It is finished. 24:30 They're making sure the prisoners will die quickly. They break the legs of one 24:37 of the thieves, they break the legs of the others so that they can't push against 24:42 their legs and they will die of suffocation. They come to the man 24:46 on the middle cross. Let's pick it up right here in John, chapter 19. 24:49 "But when they came to Jesus and found that He was already dead, they did not break his legs. 24:56 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, 25:00 bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it 25:05 has given testimony." That's John Boy. "And his testimony is true. 25:09 He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 25:15 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled -- 25:18 'Not one of his bones will be broken.' And as another scripture says, 25:22 'They will look on the one they have pierced.'" We just read it, didn't we? 25:27 "They will look on the one they have pierced." Zechariah 12, John 19 25:35 telling the same Calvary truth. And what is that Calvary truth? We killed Him. 25:43 I'm going to put it in big letters so it sticks in your mind. 25:47 We killed Him. I'm talking about you. I'm talking about me. 25:53 We killed Him. I know what you're thinking. "Man, come on, Dwight. 25:59 How could I possibly feel guilty for something I obviously, let alone 26:04 repentant, for something I obviously did not do? Terrible death. I agree. 26:09 Two millennia ago, you got it. But, I mean, please, I understand the point 26:14 you're trying to make, but let's be real. I didn't kill him. 26:19 Really, I didn't." And that's the nearly overmastering challenge 26:25 God has with me. "How am I going to help Dwight?" Understand the immensity 26:35 of the cost of just His sins alone, just one of His sins. Never mind the sins 26:41 of the world. Let's say I go over to your house for dinner or lunch. 26:51 I'd love to. And you're in the kitchen throwing lunch together 26:55 and I'm out there. Let's say your house has a fireplace, and you know above 26:58 the fireplace is that mantle, and you got all your little keepsakes there. 27:02 And clumsy me. I pick up a beautiful vase, and I'm turning it in my hand 27:08 when I drop it. It falls to the bricks below, and I am so embarrassed. 27:13 I am down there. I have to get these shards picked up before you come 27:16 out of the kitchen. And I'm picking them up as fast as I can. 27:19 Suddenly you're racing out of the kitchen, and I look up at you, and I mumble, 27:22 "I'm so sorry. Clumsy me. Listen, don't worry about it. 27:29 I'll get you another one. I think I've seen one in Walmart, 27:33 and I'll get it for you." And you look back at me with your -- with your 27:37 blanched face. Your lips are moving, but nothing is coming out. 27:43 And finally, when your voice whispers, you tell me, 27:48 "That was an heirloom from my great-grandmother. There's only one other one 27:54 in the world, and it is valued at $167,000." You know, I kind of felt sorry 28:04 a moment ago, but I've got astronomical repentance going on right now. 28:11 Why? Because I just realized the cost of what my clumsiness has done. 28:24 When I know the cost, then I feel the pain. "And I will pour out 28:32 on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace 28:35 and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, 28:40 and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child and grieve bitterly for Him 28:45 as one grieves for a firstborn." See, that's why God had to pour his spirit out, 28:52 because until His spirit works on this heart, I'm telling you, I'm just not going to get it. 28:59 I'm not going to realize the immensity of the cost. My sins killed Him. 29:10 Your sins, our sins. You say, "Aw, come on, Dwight. What sins are you talking 29:15 about?" Well, I'm talking about -- I'm talking about your darling 29:18 sin. And I'm talking about my besetting sin. 29:23 You know, the one that we have -- We even have a hard time 29:28 wanting to let go of it. "Mañana. I'll get to it someday." 29:33 Someday, that's gone. Promise, it'll be gone. And for those of us 29:38 who are sitting here right now and saying, "Yo, I appreciate this talk about great sins, 29:44 but I'm going to be honest with you. I cannot think of one big sin 29:49 in my life right now." And I can think of one big sin in your life right now. 29:56 Dishonesty. No, come on. I'm being serious. 30:01 Because, look, if you aren't able to admit that you have the sin that 30:09 killed Him... you're doing a number on yourself. 30:16 You are fooling yourself, sir. I'm telling you. The one sin, 30:25 the one addiction, the one pet that I just don't want to let go 30:34 yet, that's the one. 30:43 I debated whether to put these words on the screen or not. 30:46 I went back and forth in my own mind. 30:50 And then I just got the conviction. "No, I'll put them up." 30:54 Let me share them with you. 100 years ago... "God's law reaches the feelings 30:59 and motives, as well as the outward acts. It reveals the secrets of the 31:05 heart, flashing light upon things before buried in darkness. 31:11 God knows every thought, every purpose, every plan, every motive." 31:20 And then here's the line. "The books of Heaven record the sins that would have been 31:26 committed had there been opportunity." 31:32 And I said to myself -- Seriously, I said to myself 31:36 this week, "I don't know. I'm not sure about that." 31:42 And then, just like that, the Sermon on the Mount, 31:46 the red-letter words of Jesus. 31:49 If a man looks on a woman with lustful eyes, he has broken already 31:59 the Seventh Commandment. True or false? It's true. 32:06 The sin that I would commit were I given the opportunity. But I don't. 32:14 "The books of Heaven record the sins that would have been committed had there been 32:19 that opportunity." Wow. I'm telling you, 32:25 it's the gospel truth. We killed Him, your sin and mine. 32:31 The words of Horatius Bonar, a 19th-century Scottish hymn writer -- 32:37 "Twas I that shed the sacred blood. I nailed Him to the tree. 32:43 I crucified the Christ of God. I joined the mockery." "Desire of Ages." 32:51 Doesn't pull any punches. "Upon all" -- "Upon all rests the guilt 32:58 of crucifying the Son of God." I'm telling you, we killed Him. I did. 33:07 You did. "And I will pour out on the house of David 33:12 and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. 33:16 They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him 33:22 as one mourns for an only child and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for 33:27 a firstborn son." Because that's the truth of Calvary. 33:34 But I'm grateful for that word "look." "They will look on me." 33:40 [ Inhales sharply ] Reminds me of a camel-haired, bushy-bearded 33:48 prophet of the wilderness, John the Baptist, standing by the mighty Jordan, and he spots 33:51 a stranger in the crowd, and he points his finger, he says, "Yo, everybody, look, 33:55 look, look. Look. The Lamb of God who takes away 34:01 the sin of the world." Got to put that up. "Look. 34:06 Look, the Lamb of God." 34:13 And, by the way, aren't you glad that it says he takes away the sin of the world? 34:18 You got a sin in your life right now, like I do, that you wish He would take away? 34:23 Of course, He'll need my permission, and He'll need your permission. 34:27 But isn't that wonderful? He'll take it away. We don't have to keep it. 34:32 We can let it go. 34:38 "You sure it works that easy, Dwight?" Yep, I'm sure. 34:41 One more time "Desire of Ages." "Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul." 34:46 He knows your story backwards and forwards. He knows mine. 34:50 "You may say, 'I am sinful, very sinful.' You may be, 34:57 but the worse you are, the more you need Jesus. He turns no weeping, 35:02 contrite one away. He does not tell to any all that He might reveal." 35:08 "Dwight, I got a book about you. I'm not going to tell it all to you. 35:13 It'll crush you. It'll destroy you. I'm not going to tell you 35:18 all I know." "He turns no weeping, contrite one away. 35:23 He does not tell to any all that He might reveal, but He bids every 35:29 trembling soul, 'Take courage.'" Oh, I love that. "Take courage." "Freely will He pardon all 35:34 who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration." "Freely will He pardon 35:40 all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration." Hallelujah. 35:47 It doesn't matter what my addiction may be. It doesn't matter how sinful 35:52 you may be. "Freely, He will pardon all who come to Him for 35:58 forgiveness and restoration," but He does even more. "Oh, we can't go out of here 36:03 without getting the verse right after Zechariah 12:10. Here's the next verse. 36:09 13:1. "On that day, a fountain will be open 36:14 to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin 36:20 and impurity." For these last few sermons, we've been kind of 36:25 working around the theme "blessed are the pure and high, for they will see God." 36:29 And we put our signatures up there a few weeks ago. "On that day" -- How's that go? 36:37 Let's cut out those extraneous phrases there. "On that day, a fountain 36:42 will be opened...to cleanse us from sin and impurity." Doesn't matter what you've done 36:52 or how long you'd done it. Doesn't matter at all. On that day, 36:57 when we look on that day, He will open up a fountain to cleanse us from sin 37:05 and impurity. That's the good news of the Gospel woven through 37:09 the entire scriptures. Isaiah 1:18. "'Come now, let us settle the 37:12 matter." Yo, King James reads. "Come now, let's reason 37:16 together," says the Lord. Though your sins are as what? They shall be as what? 37:22 White as snow. Though they are what? Like crimson. 37:26 They shall be like what? Like wool. Can you believe that? 37:30 The sins I have, the sins you've got. Wow, keep reading. 37:36 I love this. From Hebrews 10:22. "Let us therefore draw near to God with a sincere heart 37:43 and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled 37:47 to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed 37:52 with pure water." Can it get any better than that? Guilty conscience gone. 37:57 Pure water all over my body. And I'm clean now. How do you do that, God? 38:04 "Keep reading, Dwight." "Okay." 1 John 1:7. "The Blood of Jesus His Son." 38:10 What's that word? Purifies us. From how much sin? All sin. 38:15 Two verses later, "If we confess our sins" -- any of them, all of them 38:21 at the same time -- "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just 38:25 to forgive us our sins." And what's that word? He will purify us. 38:30 He will purify us from all ugliness and dirtiness and filthiness and impurity. 38:39 It's gone. We got washed. >> Yes. 38:44 >> Pure water, too. Man. Oh, no wonder, "On that day, 38:50 a fountain will be opened... to cleanse us from sin and impurity." 38:56 All we have to do, you and I, is go to that fountain. And guess what? 39:02 We are at that fountain right now. Oh, I got to tell you about him. 39:07 The English poet and hymn writer William Cooper -- it's spelled "Cowper," 39:11 but he went by Cooper -- gave to the Christian church some of Her most beloved hymns. 39:17 But it comes as a shock for many people to learn that he composed his hymns 39:23 while suffering mental-health crises that plagued him on and off all his life. 39:31 They say Gen Z-ers are particularly sensitive to mental-health issues. 39:35 Here's one Gen Z-er for you. Amazing. He was a friend of John Newton. 39:43 You know John Newton? The, "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound 39:47 that saved a wretch like me," that John Newton? Newton was an older pastor, 39:52 but he befriended a young William Cooper. And it was Newton who nursed 39:57 Cooper through some of his most severe mental-health crises. He attempted suicide again 40:04 and again and again. Three times he was placed in what they called back then 40:09 the insane asylum. 40:16 But in the breaks of sanity and lucidity and clarity, 40:23 he keeps picking up his pen and scribbling gospel hymns of good news. 40:32 We got three of them in our hymnal. This one is there, 40:36 and it's a great poem. It's called one of his greatest. 40:40 Majestic hymn. "God moves in a mysterious way, 40:42 His wonders to perform. He plants His footsteps in the 40:45 sea and rides upon the storm." We've never sung it. 40:48 We may have to sing that sometime, Mr. Minister of Music. 40:51 That's a powerful one. Oh, and he's the composer 40:54 of that beautiful prayer hymn also in our hymnal. 40:56 You might remember these words. "Oh, for a closer walk with God, 41:00 a calm and Heavenly frame, a light to shine upon the road 41:04 that leads me to the Lamb." But hands down, 41:09 the most famous hymn composed by William Cooper 41:14 goes like this -- ♪ There is a fountain 41:20 filled with blood, drawn from Emmanuel's veins ♪ 41:28 ♪ And sinners plunge beneath that flood, 41:35 lose all their guilty stains ♪ 41:44 Bathing in the Red River. That's it. Sinners plunge beneath 41:50 that flood. There is a fountain that's been opened, 41:56 and we're standing on that fountain right now. We're here. 42:00 Oh, we got to sing that song. Mr. Minister of Music, come on. I picked out three. 42:04 There are six stanzas. We're going to sing just three. I want you to stand on your feet 42:07 because you sing better when you're standing. And I want to sing 42:11 that stanza we just did. But it has this beautiful going on where our voices 42:15 just go higher and higher. And I just love it. Sing your heart out. 42:19 Sing it as if it were the good news that you've been dying to learn 42:24 and we just learned it today. Come on, let's sing it. 42:27 [ Organ plays ] 42:35 All right, let's go. [ Congregation sings ] 45:33 >> Welcome to the Lord's Supper table. 45:36 Now, we contemplated this morning bathing in the Red River 45:39 with Pastor Dwight and just accepting the promise 45:42 of forgiveness and the cleansing that flows 45:45 from the Cross of Christ. 45:47 And now we get to celebrate the good news. Jesus has washed us. 45:52 He's cleansed us. And now we are set free. And to keep that 45:56 in the forefront of our minds, we're going to have -- have Mordekai Ongo 46:01 read the scripture, the verse from that evening at the Lord's Supper 46:06 with the disciples. 46:10 >> I'm going to read from the Book of Mark, 14:23-24 46:18 in the NIV. "Then He took a cup, 46:23 and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, 46:28 and they all drank from it. 'This is my blood of 46:32 the Covenant, which is poured out for many,' 46:35 he said to them. 'Truly, I tell you, 46:39 I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine 46:43 until that day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.'" 46:48 May the Lord bless this word. >> And now Andrea will have 46:52 a prayer for us. >> Please remain seated 46:56 for the prayer. Father in Heaven, 47:01 we come before you praising you and thanking you for the gift 47:05 of your Son who paid the penalty for our sins, Lord. 47:12 And as we look to the Communion service and we have the emblems of bread 47:20 and wine that represent the broken body of our Lord and His precious blood, 47:27 we ask that you would cleanse and purify us now, that we may be closer 47:33 and closer and closer to you every single day. Break it first? 48:00 ♪♪ ♪♪ 48:05 >> ♪ I walked today where Jesus walked, 48:12 in days of long ago ♪ 48:19 ♪ I wandered down each path He knew, with reverent step and slow ♪ 48:33 ♪ Those little lanes, they have not changed ♪ ♪ A sweet peace fills the air 48:48 ♪ I walked today where Jesus walked and felt His presence there ♪ 49:05 ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪ My pathway led through 49:15 Bethlehem, a memory's ever sweet ♪ ♪ The Mount of Olives 49:28 in Galilee that knew those childish feet ♪ ♪ The Mount of Olives, 49:43 hallowed scenes that Jesus knew before ♪ ♪ I saw the mighty Jordan roll, 50:02 as in the days of yore ♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ 50:19 ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪ I knelt today 50:30 where Jesus knelt, where, all alone, He prayed ♪ ♪ The Garden of Gethsemane, 50:51 my heart felt unafraid ♪ ♪ I picked my heavy burden up ♪ And with Him by my side, 51:12 I climbed the Hill of Calvary ♪ ♪ I climbed the Hill of Calvary ♪ 51:24 ♪ I climbed the Hill of Calvary, where, on the Cross, 51:37 He died ♪ ♪♪ 51:50 ♪ I walked today where Jesus walked and felt Him close 52:10 to me ♪ >> Amen. >> [ Claps ] 52:24 >> Amen. Jesus stands before us here now. And through His spirit, we hear 52:33 the words, "Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. 52:40 Do this in remembrance of me." 52:59 ♪♪ ♪♪ 53:17 And once again, Jesus turns to us, as He did to the disciples 53:21 that night, and He says, "Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood, 53:27 which was shed for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 53:36 ♪♪ ♪♪ 53:51 There was one more custom in Jesus' day. They took a special offering 53:56 for the poor. And we get to do that here at Pioneer, as well. 54:01 And we get to receive an offering for our emergency assistance fund. 54:05 And these past three months, Pioneer has been able to assist a lot of people in our community 54:10 and our county from this fund, from your generosity. So if God's blessed you 54:15 in these past few months, give a blessing back. We're going to have deacons, 54:20 ushers at the doors with baskets. You can put your gift in there. 54:27 And Matthew writes, he says, "And when they had sung a hymn, they went out." 54:34 So we'll do the same here today. Hymn 407.
