And then, to prove her point, 23:57 she cites study after study after study. 24:01 Take the case of knee pain and knee surgeries. 24:04 This is fascinating. 24:06 "The New England Journal of Medicine" featured Dr. Bruce Moseley, 24:09 an orthopedic surgeon renowned for the surgeries he performed on people with 24:13 debilitating knee pain. Some of you know exactly all about that. 24:18 Now, the here's the crucial line. In a randomized double-blind 24:24 placebo -- you know placebo is something that's fake -- placebo controlled clinical trial 24:28 published in one of the most highly respected medical journals today, 24:32 patients of Dr. Moseley were divided into two groups. All right, group number one. 24:38 These are the ones that want the real deal from this great doctor. 24:41 And they get it, all right? They want that super surgery. Group number two 24:49 underwent an elaborately crafted sham or fake surgery during 24:55 which the patient was sedated. Three incisions were made in the same location 24:59 as in the real surgery, and the patient was shown a prerecorded tape 25:03 of someone else's surgery on the video monitor. I'm absolutely sure you could 25:07 not get by with that today. I'm just sure of it. Dr. Moseley, even, by the way, 25:13 splashed water around to mimic the sound of the lavage procedure 25:18 where they have to clean out the wound. As expected, 1/3 of the patients 25:23 getting the real deal surgery experienced resolution of their knee pain. 25:27 That's about his success rate. But what really -- Listen, what really shocked 25:32 the researchers was that those getting the sham or fake surgery 25:36 had the same result. 1/3 of them reported, "You know, Doc, 25:40 that was a wonderful surgery. And I said, Do you know who Pavlov is? 26:40 Yo, he's like, "Man that rang the bell and the dogs salivated." 26:43 That's the one, so it's a journal named after him. In this study, 26:47 34 college students were hooked up to monitors and told that the electric 26:52 current would be passed through their heads. Study participants were warned 26:58 that they might experience headaches as a side effect. Although not one volt of current 27:05 was actually used, more than two thirds of the students reported headaches. 27:10 "Man, this is killing me. Boy, they told us that, right?
