00:18 Hi, and welcome to Praise. I'm Kelly Mowrer.
00:23 It is so easy for us when we think of the ways 00:26 that God has blessed us to praise His name. 00:30 But for thousands of years men and women of God 00:33 have wrestled with questions 00:35 about the trials and the sorrows that we face 00:38 living in this sinful would. 00:40 Why do bad things happen to God's children? 00:43 Where is God, when a drunk driver 00:46 hits a family in their car coming home from church 00:48 and kills their mom? 00:50 And why does a man who's never smoked 00:53 and has lived his life following God's laws of health. 00:55 Why does he die of cancer? 00:58 What about all those promises for safety and protection 01:01 and goodness and mercy following us 01:03 all the days of our loves? 01:06 Where is God when his children 01:08 are walking through the valley of shadow 01:11 and they feel totally abandoned 01:13 and cut off from the sense of his presence? 01:16 I don't think they will understand, 01:18 even begin to understand, 01:20 answers to some of these questions 01:21 until we get to heaven. 01:23 But today I want us to spend some time 01:25 looking at some of the things 01:27 the Bible says about suffering and trials. 01:30 And by faith we can be comforted by these truths. 01:34 The first thing is that when we go through the valleys 01:37 we are not alone. 01:39 In spite of how we may feel we can, by faith, 01:43 know that God is with us. 01:45 He understands and he will carry us through. 01:48 The Bible says he was a man of sorrows 01:51 and acquainted with grief. 01:53 And Jesus himself said, "I will come to you. 01:57 I will not leave you comfortless." 02:09 Oft times you wonder why tears come into your eyes 02:21 And burdens seem to be much more than you can stand 02:31 But God is standing near He sees each falling tear 02:42 Tears are a language God understands 02:53 God sees the tears of a brokenhearted soul 03:04 He sees your tears and He hears them when they fall 03:15 God weeps along with man and He takes him by the hand 03:26 Tears are a language God understands 03:37 When grief has left you low it causes tears to flow 03:48 And things have not turned out the way that you had planned 03:59 But God won't forget you, His promises are true 04:09 Tears are a language God understands 04:20 God sees the tears of a brokenhearted soul 04:31 He sees your tears and He hears them when they fall 04:42 God weeps along with man and He takes him by the hand 04:53 Tears are a language God understands 05:04 God weeps along with man and He takes him by the hand 05:15 Tears are a language 05:20 God understands He understands 05:41 Another thing that the Bible tells us 05:43 is that how we handle suffering 05:46 can actually bring glory to God 05:49 as well as being a comfort to others. 05:51 Over a hundred years ago a beautiful song was written 05:54 that has brought immeasurable comfort 05:56 to God's people around the world. 05:58 The author of that song was Civilla Martin 06:01 and she wrote an account of how it happened. 06:04 Early in the spring of 1905, 06:06 she said, "My husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York 06:10 and we developed this deep friendship 06:12 for a couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle, 06:15 true saints of God. 06:17 Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nearly 20 years. 06:22 Her husband was an incurable cripple 06:25 who had to propel himself 06:26 to and from his business in a wheel chair. 06:29 But despite their afflictions, 06:31 they lived happy Christian lives, 06:34 bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. 06:38 One day while we were visiting with the Doolittles, 06:41 my husband commented on their bright hopefulness 06:44 and asked them for the secret of it. 06:47 Mrs. Doolittle's reply was simple, 06:50 "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." 07:01 Why should I feel discouraged why should the shadows come 07:14 Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home 07:26 When Jesus is my portion My constant friend is He 07:38 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 07:50 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 08:05 I sing because I'm happy I sing because I'm free 08:16 For His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me 08:31 Let not your heart be troubled His tender word I hear 08:44 And resting on His goodness I lose my doubts and fears 08:56 Though by the path He leadeth but one step I may see 09:08 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 09:21 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 09:39 Whenever I am tempted whenever clouds arise 09:52 When songs give place to sighing when hope within me dies 10:05 I draw the closer to Him from care He sets me free 10:17 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 10:30 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 10:46 I sing because I'm happy I sing because I'm free 10:57 For His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me 11:14 Yes I know He watches me 11:45 High upon the mountain the sun is shining bright 11:54 My heart is filled with gladness here above the cares of life 12:02 But I've just come through the valley 12:06 of trouble fear and pain 12:10 It was there I came to know my God 12:15 Enough to stand and say 12:21 Even in the valley God is good 12:29 Even in the valley He is faithful and true 12:37 He carries his children through Like He said He would 12:46 Even in the valley God is good 13:02 This road of life has lead you to a valley of defeat 13:10 You wonder if the father has heard your desperate plea 13:18 There is hope in that rugged place 13:23 where tears of sorrow dwell 13:26 Cant you hear him gently whispering 13:31 I'm here and all is well 13:37 Even in the valley God is good 13:46 Even in the valley He is faithful and true 13:54 He carries His children through Like He said he would 14:02 Even in the valley God is good 14:16 God is good 14:27 Harry Thacker Burleigh was born in 1866. 14:31 His grandfather Hamilton Waters had been a slave. 14:35 Who'd been beaten so savagely 14:36 that he became blind as a result. 14:39 But he passed along the beautiful old songs 14:42 by singing them to his grandson Harry. 14:45 Harry was a baritone soloist who received a scholarship 14:48 from the National Conservatory of Music 14:51 and was hired by a very elite and wealthy church 14:55 in New York City 14:57 as their principal soloist for many years. 15:00 In those days the whites and the blacks 15:02 didn't worship together. 15:04 But the person who cast the deciding vote 15:07 to hire Harry was none other than 15:10 the famous financier J.P. Morgan. 15:13 Burleigh became nationally and internationally known 15:16 for his Negro spirituals. 15:18 He performed for both the King of England 15:20 and President Theodore Roosevelt. 15:23 He wrote through all these songs, 15:25 there breathes a hope, 15:27 a faith in the ultimate justice and brotherhood of man. 15:31 The cadences of sorrow invariably turned to joy 15:34 and the message is ever manifest that eventually deliverance 15:38 from all that hinders and oppresses the soul will come. 15:42 And man, every man will be free. 15:46 Listen now as the Colburns play one of Harry Burleigh's 15:50 best known spirituals, 15:53 "Deep River, my home is over Jordan." 19:13 When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, 19:26 When sorrows like sea billows roll 19:38 Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say 19:50 It is well, it is well with my soul 20:03 It is well with my soul 20:16 It is well, it is well with my soul 20:30 And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight 20:42 The clouds be rolled back as a scroll 20:53 The trump shall resound and my Lord shall descend 21:04 Even so it is well with my soul 21:18 It is well with my soul 21:30 It is well, it is well with my soul 21:42 It is well with my soul 21:54 It is well, it is well with my soul 22:22 Jesus told us that while we are in this world 22:25 we will have troubles. 22:27 But He said, "be of good cheer, I have overcome this world." 22:32 Whether we're listing to Diane 22:34 and singing in our hearts with her, 22:35 "It is well with my soul," or whether we're saying with Job, 22:39 "I don't understand why these things are happening 22:43 but I do know that my redeemer lives. 22:45 And that he will stand on this earth in the latter day. 22:50 The Apostle John wrote it this way, 22:52 "I heard a great voice out of Heaven saying, 22:55 'behold the tabernacle of God is with men 22:58 and He will dwell with them and they shall be His people 23:02 and God himself shall be with them 23:04 and be their God. 23:07 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes 23:10 and there shall be no more death. 23:12 Neither sorrow nor crying, 23:14 neither shall there be anymore pain 23:17 for the former things are passed away." 23:41 The timeless theme Earth and Heaven will pass away 23:52 It's not a dream God will make all things new that day 24:02 Gone is the curse from which I stumbled and fell 24:12 Evil is banished to eternal hell 24:22 No more night No more pain 24:31 No more tears Never crying again 24:41 Praises to the great "I am " 24:50 We will live in the light of the risen Lamb 25:09 See all around now the nations bow down to sing 25:19 The only sound are the praises to Christ, our King 25:30 Slowly the names from the book are read 25:39 I know the King there's no need to dread 25:52 No more night No more pain 26:02 No more tears Never crying again 26:11 Praises to the great "I am " 26:20 We will live in the light of the risen Lamb 26:32 Look over there, it's a mansion prepared just for me 26:42 Where I can live with my savior eternally 26:55 No more night No more pain 27:06 No more tears Never crying again 27:15 Praises to the great "I am " 27:23 We will live in the light of the risen Lamb 27:33 We will live in the light of the risen Lamb |
