00:17 Hello and welcome back to Praise. I'm Kelly Mowrer and
00:21 this half hour we're going to listen to a series of songs 00:24 reminding us of the blessing of being with Jesus who loved 00:29 us so much he came to be our friend. On September 13, 1845 00:33 this letter appeared in the New York Observer written by a man 00:37 named Thomas Salmon. He wrote, during my residence at Coles 00:41 Hill, Worwicher, England I became acquainted with 00:43 W. W. Walford, a blind preacher. A man of obscure birth and 00:48 connections and no education, but of strong mind and most 00:51 retentive memory. In the pulpit, he never failed to select a 00:55 lesson well adapted to his subject, giving chapter and 00:59 verse with unerring precision and scarcely every misplacing 01:02 a word in his repetition of the psalms, every part of the New 01:05 Testament, the prophecies and some of the histories so that he 01:09 had the reputation of knowing the whole Bible by heart. 01:12 He actually sat in a chimney corner employing his mind and 01:15 and composing a sermon or two for Sabbath delivery and his 01:18 hands in cutting and shaping and polishing bones for shoe horns 01:22 and other little useful implements and at intervals 01:25 he attempted poetry. On one occasion, paying him a visit, 01:29 he repeated two or three pieces which he had composed and having 01:33 no friend at home to commit them to paper, he had laid them up 01:37 in the storehouse of his mind. How will this do, asked he, as 01:41 he repeated the following lines with a complacent smile touched 01:45 with some light lines of fear lest he subject himself to 01:48 criticism. I rapidly copied the lines with my pencil as he 01:52 uttered them and I sent them for insertion in the observer if you 01:56 should think them worthy of preservation. And these are the 02:01 lines. Sweet hour of prayer, Sweet hour of prayer that calls 02:06 me from a world of care and bids me at my Father's throne make 02:12 all my wants and wishes known. In seasons of distress and grief 02:18 my soul has oft found relief and oft escaped the tempter's snare 02:24 by thy return sweet hour of prayer. Listen as we start with 02:29 Diane singing What a Friend We Have in Jesus and Sweet Hour of 02:34 Prayer. Diane Anders/ What a Friend 02:43 Medley.
