00:01 Hi, and welcome back to Your Favorites by Request.
00:03 This as I always say 00:04 is my favorite time of the program 00:06 where we get to talk to people who are actually people. 00:09 I sit here at the piano and play, 00:11 and you sing along but I never really hear you. 00:14 But this is the moment 00:15 that I get to actually talk to a person. 00:17 And I'm gonna talk to a great friend of mine 00:19 Mr. Billy Blackwood. 00:20 What a great heritage and legacy 00:22 he has of gospel music, southern gospel quartet music. 00:26 And he is, I believe out in California right now. 00:29 So we're gonna just talk to him 00:31 for a while and ask him. 00:33 Billy, are you there? 00:36 I am here, Tim. 00:37 Awesome. 00:38 Well, it's great to see you. 00:40 Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule. 00:42 It's great to see you. 00:43 And tell me a little bit about what music means to you? 00:47 Well, you know I tell people in our concerts, 00:50 gospel music is different than all other genres of music, 00:53 at least in this. 00:55 That other genres 00:57 whether it be country, rock, jazz, pop, 00:59 whatever are defined by style of music. 01:01 Gospel music is not that way. 01:03 Gospel music is not defined by style of music 01:05 because it's not the music that makes the gospel. 01:07 It's the message. Nice. 01:08 And so gospel music, 01:10 regardless of the package it comes in, 01:12 contains the message of the hope, 01:16 the peace, the comfort that we have, 01:18 the story of the gospel. 01:20 All those things are contained in gospel music 01:22 and it's a music like no other. 01:24 And I tell people too that, 01:27 you know, where some music can make you 01:29 sad or happy or whatever. 01:31 You don't tickle your ears. 01:32 Gospel music has the property, the component if you will 01:37 of being able to really touch our spirit 01:39 and touch our soul right where we live. 01:42 And, you know, God created human beings 01:44 with the capacity to appreciate music. 01:48 And He created music really as a spiritual medium. 01:51 I mean, before there was heaven and earth. 01:54 Music was going on in heaven. 01:56 Right, yes. 01:57 And so we know it's eternal 01:59 and God created us with the capacity 02:03 and the receptors really in our brain 02:07 to respond to music in a way that is unique. 02:10 And so when do we do that, 02:12 whatever message is in that music 02:14 comes across and we impart that 02:17 and so, that's why gospel music is so important, 02:20 because people are able to wrap not only their minds 02:25 or their, you know, their ears. 02:27 or their appreciation 02:28 but theirs hearts around the message of gospel music, 02:31 and it can bring that hope 02:32 and that peace and that joy 02:34 in times when maybe we are not feeling so hopeful, 02:37 or joyful, or peaceful. 02:39 Absolutely, you know, I get so many requests 02:41 with that have stories attach to them 02:44 of how the songs, 02:45 the reason that, that song mean something to them 02:47 is because of the troublesome time 02:49 or struggle that they were going through. 02:51 So you're right, it has the power to really penetrate 02:54 the problem 02:55 and bring about what the difference 02:58 that this music means. 03:00 So I love what you have to say, that's a great perspective. 03:03 Thank you very much for that. That's brilliant. 03:06 Well, talking about music, 03:08 what is the favorite song that you have? 03:10 What do you think? 03:11 You know, there are so many but if had to pick one, 03:14 I think I'd pick, "It is well with my soul". 03:16 Lot of people know the story of that song. 03:17 Oh, right. 03:18 You know, it was written in a time of great tragedy. 03:23 Horatio Spafford had suffered to the Chicago fire 03:27 ending in the loss of four of his daughters at sea 03:29 and God began to administer the hymn 03:32 that the words of that song, 03:33 when peace like a river attendeth my way. 03:37 When darkness like seagulls roll, 03:40 his daughters appear at that sea 03:41 and just a song that's, 03:44 you know, for almost a 150 years now 03:47 has brought people great comfort 03:49 because we all go through times that are trying. 03:53 Jesus said, in this world you have tribulation, 03:55 to be a good cheer, I've overcome the world. 03:57 So we know when we're going through tough times 03:59 that God's Spirit is there to minister to us 04:01 and encourage us. 04:02 And this song tells that so beautifully. 04:04 It does, Billy. 04:06 Wow, what a minister. Thank you, bud. 04:10 When peace like a river 04:16 Attendeth my way 04:21 When sorrows 04:24 Like sea billows roll 04:30 Whatever my lot 04:35 Thou hast taught me to say 04:41 It is well, it is well 04:47 With my soul 04:53 It is well 04:59 With my soul 05:04 It is well, it is well 05:10 With my soul 05:16 It is well, it is well 05:22 With my soul 05:33 Billy Blackwood, thank you so very much 05:35 for taking time out of your busy schedule. 05:37 I appreciate you.
